357 Magnum vs 45 ACP

If you really got two cents for all of these post there would be no debate because you could get them both... for the body guard you could now afford to hire lol
but really, its been said before and it will be said again, accuracy, accuracy, accuracy. you would be better off with a 22short if it were the only thing you were able to accurately hit the target with time and time again and make fast AND effective fallow up shots. if you cant hit him in 6 or 8 shots then all you have is an $800 club. if it is for home defense in all likely hood your not going to be reloading because he's gonna be dead or hightailin it outta there so that is not an issue. And you also have to think if anyone else will be using it. it if is for just your home your wife may have to use it. The 357 has alot of kick but then again you could just load it up with 38's. IMHO i would have both at the ready but go for the 45 and put two in him in the time that it takes to do one with the 357 but i would still want the 357 there because autoloaders will jam way more often than a revolver even though it is rare in either (but all that i currently have in my room ready to go is my 357 for certain personal reasons). For carry out side the house i would go with the 1911 because it is thiner and quicker to reload (which is more important because the probability of getting into a fire fight outdoors is greater than indoors with some teenager stung out on drugs trying to make a quick buck) and the mags are alot thinner than a speed reloader which means more comfortable for those 366 days a year when your not going to use them. Just keep in mind that unlike a revolver you will have to rotate your mags or the springs will go bad and you will have feeding issues. for over all stopping power its a mute point as you can see ↑x10. You hit him with either its going to ruin his day and leave you with a mess to clean up and NEVER shoot in the direction of other rooms if the are occupied because there is a very high chance that the round may over penetrate (or you miss) and then you'll be going to your kids funeral. All in all they are both great rounds with their own pros and cons and they WILL do their job as long as YOU do yours.

P.S. happy almost three year anniversary this thread haha

They really should make a sticky that 357 vs 45 is six of one, half dozen of the other.
Depends on the gun. It might be more accurate to say "six of one, 13+1 of the other." :)

Take both to the range, put a couple of boxes of ammor through each of them, then go with the one you can shoot the best.

Hey! Dude! Pass the popcorn!

Sorry guys, I know better but can't help myself...

10mm FTW! More rounds and more power. 1911, Glock, even revolver.

Take your pick and load up some HST 180's around 1250, they're SCARY! :neener:

SwampFox offers 180 grain Gold Dots and XTPs at around 1200 fps in standard-pressure .40 S&W--I guess that's almost scary. ;)

If I have to be in a shoot out again I'll prefer water pistols at a 100 yds on a windy day.

This can go on and on they are both great calibers and unless you have had a lot of tactical training both day and night with full house loads you may be surprised where the second shot goes especially with the 357 and in total darkness the muzzle flash lights up the world around you.Just ask the old timers back in the 70's when we were stupid and shot without ear or eye protection how many still have a ringing in their ears and hearing problems now.(Me for one)

Man this can't be settled. Both are great rounds and will more than do the job. I like my 1911 45 acp because it's what I'm use to using. I usually keep it loaded with 230gr Winchester Ranger T =]

The .45 will put more hair on your chest and lead in your pencil, or so I've heard.

What is more important is that you choose the type of handgun that is best for you, caliber decisions are secondary. (and quite irrelevant when it comes to similarly powered handgun calibers)

i WENT .451 dETONICS: Speer flying ashtrays 200 grains, .45 caliber, at 1200 fps.

.357 was too noisy. Plus, I had to shoot it out of a junky Colt Python 4".
On top of that, the guy forced me to compare it to a tricked out 70's Gold Cup, that drove tacks. What pain I suffered back then.

Which one? Which one will you spend money on? I'm going with 357 cause I like Royal Blue Colts - Trooper Mk III, Python, whatever. They almost always fit my hands better than any autoloader - so that's what I buy. If it don't fit and feel comfortable, you'll struggle and that's not good :(

Stopping power? What are you stopping? Person? Rabbid Dog? Bear? Lunatic behind the wheel? Straight-up, or through a wall/door? With light body armor/winter cloths (heavy body armor and you don't need a Hand Gun)?

I'm Outta Popcorn...........!!!

Dang this is a long thread and I don't know any more than when it started...

#1: There ain't no different degrees of dead....

#2: What you are comfortable with and can shoot well.... that IS the one that you carry....

:banghead::banghead::banghead:

I own both,45acp semi auto and 357mag revolver, Even though with most standard rounds 357mag is about 1400-1500 fps, the 45 acp only about 800-900 fps but a much bigger chuck of lead . Their are videos on utube, with ppl shooting both at watermelons. And the melons explode practically the same with both pistols. But for self protection Id rather go with my 45 acp-13 rounds with a 4" barrell vs my 357 mag snubby with only 5 rounds.

I use the Marshall and Sannow report when ammo shopping but I have to wonder about how accurate it would be today with the constant change in bullet evolution. The ammo of the 80's and 90's is not necessarily the same stuff that's on the market in 2011.

I prefer the lower noise level of the 45ACP over the shrill 357 Magnum. In a self defense situation you will not be using ear protection.

Evan Marshall has a pretty good website. On it he has a test bed, where the guys post actual test results of ammunition. Might have a look.

As for the 'test results' from M and S: would you post that magic .357 round that is equally effective to a .308 rifle softpoint? Talk about magic bullets;0

That result made me realize I should use some other form of 'tests' for ammo evaluation.

As my friend/swat sniper says,
"If I shoot at you, your dead."
In other words, they don't miss.

These threads get old....and I honestly don't know why it was brought back up

I feel like it might be closing time people, lets let this one die....

Both will do the job and both have advocates that can proove anything. I have owned a ruger security six 357 and a Super Blackhawk 44 magnum. I have shot a 1911 and the recoil of the 45 was much more pleasant. The security six was about the same weight as the 45 and had a much stronger, perceived, recoil.

When I worked the Homicide Division I viewed quite a number of firearm deaths, some by suicide others via murder. I came to the conclusion that either .357 or .45 will dispatch a human being quite easily.

The .357 was better at notifying neighbors that a firearm had been used in the vicinity.

I carry a .45 constantly.

They both have great stopping power for me: The price of the ammo stops me from shooting them!

I see a LOT of excellent information in this thread. This question is one that comes up often, and rather then close it, it should almost be a sticky.

Don't remember what my friend had in the .357, but it was much higher pitched, perhaps a 125 grain bullet, allowing a LOT of boom and blast that might be avoided with a heavier bullet, and slower powder.

That said, I tried a Python and a Gold Cup, and went with .45, to end at .451 Detonics/Super. I like the heavier recoil with the Super, and, that I'm moving a bullet twice as heavy as most 357 loads, at nearly the same velocity,
and, it's a .452" bullet.

I'm afraid I've turned into ammo hoarder, rather then shooter. Until I have a press up and working again, it's hard to shoot anything other then 22lr these
days.

Note: I haven't read the whole thread so please excuse me if I repeat.

IMO:

.357 is a monster cartridge and, ballistically, I love it. But, it's simply way too loud. Significant, irreparable hearing damage makes it unappealing for possible defence use. Plus, it's blinding in low light conditions. That said, I'd opt for the .45.

Embrass the madness!:D Not only is it an excellent cartridge, but you get a flash bang grenade for free.
