I suggest a leather/kydex hybrid like mine. Kydex is much less harsh than leather is over time...

The lock is not a deal breaker for me. I have 2 J Frames and both have locks.
Neither have proven to be troublesome or problematic yet. S&W is building some models w/o them. As is evidenced on Bud's website so if you have a preference you might ask your dealer to specify the SKU: 150544.

DAdams, that looks like a screamin' deal. I was reading an article in, I think, Handguns Magazine, on moon clips for revolvers. I had thought of having any double-action revolver I ever owned cut for moon clips. I mean there's nothing to be lost, is there? Seems like ordering it that way from the factory would just speed up the process and have it be a little cheaper.

Is there anything lost from cutting a cylinder for moon clips?

And reload cycling time. ;) The cylinder is cut or routed out to accept the thickness of the clip. You can still load singly or with Speedstrips, the moonclip offers up another fast reload option. You do have to carry something larger in diameter for reloading if you are going to actually use them for EDC. I don't really see any downside?

Yes, likely, and the satisfaction of knowing that it is done right. If I were going to buy one today I would look for no lock and cut for clips. In a perfect world....oh and add CT 405s. :evil:

In a surreal perfect world I would forgo an X42 and go the lockless M&P340 with CT Grips :rolleyes: route. I know, I know, heresy. :fire:

I've thought about moon clips, but I wonder how practical they are to carry?
I read where the .38 ones are extremely flimsy and easily bent. I also wonder if when you were using standard (non-moon) rounds if there would be a possibility of a light primer strike because the non-mooned round would be a bit farther from the firing pin. Does that make sense or is my ignorance leaking through?
 
fivewheeler, there are pouches to ccw moonclipped rounds similar to ones that carry speedloaders with the exception there is usually a post sometimes magnetic that comes uo through the center for stability. the non mooned round will sit at the same depth because the head rests on the ejector star on the inside and the high point of the cylinder on the outside. the only thing that sits in the groove is the actual moonclip itself. it is a pretty slick setup that gives you yet another option for reloads. options that do not take away from functionality are A-OK in my book. and you are not ignorant. this is a discussion place to learn new info. i have learned alot on THR. people here have been good to me and i really appreciate that. this is a good place to be.
 
if you really want it moonclipped, i would order it that way. i have seen prices around $200-$300 for you to ship the cylinder out to have it cut. plus shipping both ways. you might also affect your warranty. maybee not. that im not sure about. just remember, carrying moonclipped reloads are going to be the same bulk (not weight) of concealing extra cylinders. but it does give you some cool options. good luck with your decision.
 
If that is the case then I guess moon clips are the way to go if you don't mind spending the extra money. And since the x42 are pretty cost-efficient low price/good gun models, I don't see an issue with that. Now I just have to hope that deal will hold through until July...

Actually never mind, that holster doesn't have much cant to it. I want the grip to be more inline with my body or it'll stick out more.

Thanks for the lockless link. My ffl guy has his own source and when you consider the transfer fee he doesn't charge me if I let him order form his sources, he is able to stay with Bud's.

I'm sure the locking system works fine but I the only time I lock up my safety it is in a gun safe.

Brass Rain, for iwb with my 442 i carry it appendix position, at about 1-Oclock. just right of my belt buckle in a straight drop holster with a very strong metal clip. this works great for me. the gun seems to sit in a natural divot there. iwb on my hip doesnt work well bc the bulk of the cylinder. the clip is black and flat and blensd well with a black or even dark brown belt. before you drop big money on a good holster, put the UNLOADED gun in a few positions to see what you want. the holster i have been using is a HighNoon Mr. Softy. it was only about $25.00. it has served me well for a while and they keep them in stock. they also hace canted ones and tuckable ones. not what i expected for $25.00. money well spent.

From what I heard, The Snubby Revolver by Lovette is a must. Actually, thanks to your link I downloaded it directly to my PC for instant reading (it's where I do the bulk of my reading anyway).

As for Clint Smith and Thunder Ranch I've always found Smith to be a particularly good instructor but found his DVDs lacking. I've only had experience with his shotgun DVD, but most of that info could be found right here on THR. If you're new to the game his DVD might offer some some insight, otherwise you might want to pick up his defensive tactics DVD, which will probably show more useful info.

I heard someone talking about a book called "shooting (or firing) double action revolvers". I couldn't find that on amazon. That may not be the correct name... if that rings a bell with anyone.
 
So I just did something I never thought I would...

I've always looked down on pocket carry, but after hearing positive things about the Mika holster, I figured I'd give it a try. If it works out, I'll have a nice way to carry my 642 as backup to my Glock 26... Or solo for a quick run to the store... In 2-4 weeks I'll know for sure I guess.
 
If you're going to carry in a pocket,
that's the best holster for it.

Good to hear. I've never pocket carried before, and as stated I've never been a fan, especially for a primary weapon. But if it works for back up, I'll be happy. Carry report to follow. :cool:
 
New 438

Just purchased a 438 at the Jax Gun Show a few weeks ago( $380 OTD). It will be my EDC, replacing my 22-4 N frame 45acp. The N will be my carry piece when hunting now. I have enjoyed reading/learning from this thread. I have put Hogue Monogrips on and this morning swapped out the rebound spring with a Wilson 14lb..

I was pleasantly surprised with the mild recoil both with the factory and Hogue grips. I put 50 rounds of Win WB and 10 Hornady 110. Just set the press up to load 125 gr for the range.

Again thanks for all the great info. BTW I'm using a Galco in pocket and Ramora IWB.

Well so much for my plan DAdams. My ffl guy can't get it from his sources so I asked him to send his ffl to Buds and I'll pay more and get what I want if the no lock 442 is still in stock by then. It would have been sweet to get it for 365 and no transfer fee but if Bud has it, I'll pay the 370 plus the transfer and be happy.

I ordered a nemesis pocket holster, speed strip and a speed loader in advance of purchase. What tears me up is tomorrow I could have a NIB 642 for 365 tomorrow evening but I want a black revolver.

clutch, it might cost a few bucks more and take a little more time to get, but you will be gettimg what you want. if it is something you will shoot and carry often, then it is worth it, right? if you really wanted a black gun, the 642 will never make you happy. i have a 442 and love it. carry it every day and shoot it often. it is a gun i will never get rid of. i am partial to dark guns myself.

I ordered both the round cut and the square cut over two years ago -- as all pant pockets are different. If I use the round cut in certain (right-front) large pockets, the muzzle wants to ride over to the right and the grip to the left, so it really is not in line to pull a fast draw.

I use both round cut and square cut equally, depending on the pocket.

For how little they cost (and he might ship both for one fee), go with round and square!

Well the 442 no lock is on order form Buds. Thank you very much DAdams.

They didn't have my FFL guy listed though he faxed his copy over this morning.

I ordered it anyway and then did the live chat with support. They said it takes a day for a new ffl to show up and by by reading their web pages I thought it was same day but no biggie.

You are absolutely right, once I knew I liked the 442 better than the 642 I had to have that, when I learned there is a no lock version, I had to have that. I don't have any firearms with that additional point of failure. I troubleshoot fairly complex automation systems and some not so complex. Adding a point of failure to something that when employed, failure is not an option, is insanity in my humble opinion.

So who sells the Mika? Like most shooters I have holsters I started out with and holsters I continue to use.
