642 Club Part Three

May I join the club please? I just bought my first J frame about a month ago. It's a 642 Airweight TALO edition, though the TALO part simply seems to include fancy grips and a forged trigger. I recently put some different grips on it. It's a great personalized touch since I'm Irish. I have Celtic knotwork hanging on my walls, I have it tattooed on my skin, and now it graces my J frame. The grips are done by Esmeralda O'Sheehan.

This is my summer time pocket pistol. It's a great little gun. I've got 100 rounds through it, and am surprised by the accuracy.

You buncha enablers started me looking at 642s about a year ago.

Today I bought one. It's got a lock, but if it gives me any trouble it'll come out. I did WANT a no-lock one, but they are tough to come by and this is what was in the case at the local store.

Its cousin the bottomfeeder came with. Pretty nice day. Tomorrow, we shoot. :D

Range report from day 1 with my new 642:

I need some work figuring out how to shoot this thing right. Close enough for what it is intended for, though, with most of my groups being paper-plate sized at 6-7 yards. Concerned about the occasional flier that I have, though- can absolutely tell that the barrel is 2" instead of the 4-5" of my other two pistols, and not the DA/SA automatic that I am used to.

That said (all good so far), I'm getting an occasional failure of the trigger to reset. Out of a box of range ammo today, happened a few times, about once every other cylinder or so. Is this the type of new-pistol stuff that some dry firing will work out? Noticed it a little last night when I was clicking it through in my house too.

The trigger reset can be tricky if you're practicing quick double taps. Just feel it out a bit and give it space to return. A trick I use is to tap my fingernail on the inner-front of the trigger guard and then return my finger to the trigger. This can be done in a split second and will always ensure proper trigger return. Once you do this a few times, you'll get used to the speed and be able to time it without removing your finger from the trigger.

The trigger reset is awkward, even compared to other DA revolvers. I had the same problem myself. Eventually I just dry-fired and shot it into muscle memory.

SKT239 - we let the cousins in to play here, too.

Well, Its been a while since Six replied to my post but I'm happy to know I can play too :) Nevertheless, I still plan on adding a 642 some time... Here is my 637...

Here is the sweet rig I recently had made by Rick Garcia. He's makes excellent holsters and has Mika like customer service.

Thanks for letting me post.

I agree with Dr. DA, SKT: nice looking rig. I've always been fond of the 637; I just like a hammer. Someday, maybe ...

Here's Mr. Garcia's web site. I like his self-description:

"I don't do 'fancy'...and I'm not trying to re-invent anything here...my goal is to build good, solid, using stuff that will last a lifetime."

Thanks Nema. Mr. Garcia is a great guy to deal with. He will spend as much time as need be with you to ensure you get exactly what you want. I have a condition (crohns) that makes my weight change pretty frequently. Mr. Garcia took that into consideration when spacing the holes on the belt. He's also quick and keeps you updated the entire time. I'll be using him for all my leather needs in the future... Once I remember to bring the good camera home from work, I'll do a proper review.

Got my 442 back from S&W after having a pin inside the frame shear off. If I had not missed their calls the turn around time from "broken frame and baggie of parts" to "New frame and same parts" gun would be about 6 weeks total.

Have not had a chance to shoot it yet but that may change tomorrow!

Love my 642 but ? 640 for PCCA

I love my 642 but am interested in maybe buying a 640 w/ 2-1/4" to use for PCCA competition. Any feedback on this gun would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I'm going to get into reloading. I would like to shoot my 642 a lot more. It really does take a lot of practice to really get proficient with these little things.

With Unique and small pistol primers (CCI500), what loads (haven't decided on bullets yet) do you like for the 642?

I generally carry the Buffalo Bore 158 LSWCHP +P, so a 158 LSWC that prints similarly would be great...

I use unique and the CCI 500's also, but the bullet type determines the load that should be used. I use 125 gr. JHP's so my load will be different than your 158 LSWC. I really like the unique loads though in my 642. You will enjoy reloading.
