Your taxes are due! Fill out your Form 1040.

THR Virtual Match March 04 Targets: Courtesy of the federal government

As you all know it is tax time again. Unless you have filed an extension or you are from the extreme libertarian fringes of THR, your taxes are due April 15th. Well here at The High Road, we are giving you an extra 15 days to file your taxes and they are not due until April 30th! The only problem is you have run out of ink in your pen and you must fill out your Form 1040 with lead!

Here is the course of fire. In the interest of simplicity (more than last month at least), I am going to tell you who you are. With this information, you will now fill out your Form 1040 tax return using the personal information I am about to give you. The match will be judged by the least number of shots necessary to complete your tax form. Along with the extension that THR has granted you, you are also only required to fill out 15 parts of the Form 1040. So be prepared to shoot a minimum of 15 shots this month.

1040 Front Side
1040f.jpg

Shot 1: First Name. Shoot anywhere in or touching the first name box.

Shot 2: Last Name. Shoot anywhere in or touching the last name box.

Shot 3: Social Security Number. To some the Mark of the Beast; To others, just another number. Get your shot in or touching the lines of the box.

Shot 4: Line 1 - Marital Status. The nice thing about putting your SS# on the form is they now know your address because they track your movements through the smart chip in your credit card anyway. So you are single, shoot the single box, the 1 next to the box, or the word single.

Shot 5: Line 6a - Exemptions. Since the government tracks your movements and you foolishly think your tinfoil hat blocks their tracking devices in your dental fillings, you have a hard time finding a date. You have no wife and you have no kids. Hit the 6a, the box, or the Yourself.

Shot 6: Line 6d - Add numbers on lines above. That black little box is asking for you to shoot it. Don’t let it down. Hit in or on the little black box.

Shot 7: Line 22 - Total Income. Since you gave them your social security number, they know how much money you made and all of those other forms of income; they only want to know how honest you are going to be. This shot must be in or touching the white box to the right of the “22â€.

Shot 8: Line 34 – Adjusted Gross Income. We already went over this, Big Brother knows everything. Just let them know what you are going to say your AGI is. This shot must be in or touching the white box to the right of the “34â€.

Form 1040 Back Side
1040r.jpg

Shot 9: Line 37 – Itemized Deductions. No witty remarks this time. Just shoot in or on that big huge box to the right of the number “37â€.

Shot 10: Line 60 – Total Tax. How many times do we have to go over this? They know everything you make and do. This is just a test to see how honest you are. This shot must be in or touching the white box to the right of the “60â€.

Shot 11: Line 68 – Total Payments. I know I am getting easy on your guys. That is as big as a box as it is going to get. Tell us what your total payments were. This shot must be in or touching the white box to the right of the “68â€.

Shot 12 & 13: Line 72 – AMOUNT YOU OWE. You didn’t think you were getting a return this year did you? Of course not. You owe and owe so much YOU MUST SHOOT LINE 72 TWICE. These two shots must be in or touching the white box to the right of the “72â€.

Shot 14: Your Signature. Sign in lead. This shot must be in or touching the signature box.

Shot 15: Date. Date the form in the caliber of your choosing. This shot must be in or touching the date box.

You are finished!!! Here is how we are going to score this thing since this can be a hard target. Top score is who ever shot all 15 sections in the least number of shots. So a perfect score would be “15 in 15â€. Next highest score would be shooting all 15 sections in something over 15 shots. So if I missed a few times, but got all 15 sections, I might have a score of “15 in 20†or “15 in 35â€.

There is a chance some of you might get frustrated and decide not to finish it or you might decide to risk that no one is going to shoot all 15 sections. So if you shot 14 sections in 14 shots, you would finish below everyone who shot 15 sections, regardless of the number of shots it took them. So here is a potential score list.

1st: Photo Guy “15 in 17â€
2nd: Ankey “15 in 20â€
3rd: El Rojo “12 in 12â€
4th: Ready on the Right “5 in 20â€

Official Target
Do no use the .jpg images I created above. The official target this month is a Form 1040 tax form. You can download it in .pdf format or use the Form 1040 in your 2003 1040 Forms and Instructions booklet or get the forms from your local library. You will need two of the Form 1040 forms so you can shoot the front side and the back side separate.

Classes

Handgun: Iron Sights
All shots will be taken from 10 feet. Handguns can be any caliber, but the gun must have iron sights. No optics. Shots must be taken standing without a rest. One or two handed.

Handgun: Scoped
All shots will be taken from 10 feet. Handguns can be any caliber and must have some sort of optical sight. Non-magnified red dots and holographs are classified in this category. Shots must be taken standing without a rest. One or two handed.

Rifle: Iron Sights/Non-Magnified Optics
All shots will be taken from 30 feet. The rifle can be of any caliber, but must have iron sights or some kind of non-magnified optical site. Any position or rest: standing, kneeling, prone, bench, bipod, and/or sandbags.

Rifle: Scoped Intermediate
All shots will be taken from 50 yards. The rifle can be of any caliber and must have some kind of magnified optic. Any position or rest: standing, kneeling, prone, bench, bipod, and/or sandbags.

Rifle: Scoped Advanced
All shots will be taken from 100 yards. The rifle can be of any caliber and must have some kind of magnified optic. Any position or rest: standing, kneeling, prone, bench, bipod, and/or sandbags.

Number of Entries
Each shooter is allowed to make three entries from any class, but each entry must be a different firearm. So if you want to shoot three different guns all in the same class, go for it. The only exception is if you want to shoot the same firearm once in the iron sights class and once in the scoped class as long as you shoot with irons in the iron sight class and with an optic/scope in the optic/scope class.

Remember the rules for posting!
All scores will be posted in this thread. All questions and comments should be posted over in the comments and questions thread in order to reduce the number of posts to wade through come counting time and for new participants.

General THR Virtual Match Rules

The High Road Virtual Match Rules and FAQ Rojo Version 3/30/2004

What is it?

THR Virtual Match is a monthly shooting competition held in cyberspace and hosted on THR forums. Volunteers who enjoy the shooting sports and want to share a challenging, enjoyable, good-natured competition with like-minded souls run the matches for the fun of the THR members.

MISSION:
Provide a fun and challenging shooting competition
Encourage the safe use of firearms by responsible THR members
Encourage members to try shooting methods, type, or styles that may be new to them.

Who can play?

Anyone can participate in a match any month. We encourage all participants to have a THR log in, but it is not required.

The Basic Rules:
-Treat all guns as if they were always loaded
-Never let the muzzle cover anything that you are not willing to destroy
-Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target
-Be sure of your target and what’s behind it
-SAFELY follow the course of fire described for each month’s match
-Only shoot where it is safe and legal to do so
-Ammo – If not designated in the specific match description, feel free to use any ammunition you like, as long as it is safe.
The bottom line is to SHOOT SAFELY.

HONOR CODE:

The match relies completely on the honor of the participants to follow the rules and score targets for the match.
Remember: “Character means Doing the Right Thing Even When Nobody's Looking.†Print out only ONE target per shooter per class per month (unless specified otherwise). Shoot your course of fire and report your score.

Is there an entry fee?

No. These matches are completely free and done for fun.

Is there a prize for the winner?

No. The only reward is, perhaps, seeing your screen name listed above someone else’s when the results are posted.

Who runs the matches?

A designated match coordinator will define the specifics of the task and scoring for each months match.

What is defined in each months match?

The details of each match will change but the information provided will include:
1) An official target (often downloadable from this site or a link to another site with free targets)
2) Definitions of the course of fire, the distance to the target, the type of firearms that are to be used
3) the method of firing and/or holds/supports allowed
4) the number of rounds
5) the method of scoring
6) a definition of classes

How do I enter?

1) If you are not a member of THR then it is suggested, but not required, that you register on the site first.
2) Read and understand these rules/faq and the specific monthly instructions. Download the target for the month and print it out.
3) Bring the target and your guns to your local range
4) Shoot the match as described.
5) Score your target yourself. (You are on your honor to do this correctly)
6) Submit your name, score, class and other info to the THR match coordinator by private message or posting on the match thread.
7) Scanning or photographing your target and posting it is encouraged but is not required.
8) Wait until the end of the month to see how you did against the other THR members.
9) Repeat next month or as often as you like during the year.

What is the cut-off date for match entries?

Unless otherwise specified the final date for each months contest will be the last day of that month.

Can I practice before shooting the match?

Unless otherwise specified in the monthly match directions, you may take some practice shots before shooting the match target. However, you should not use a copy of the match target for practice shots. This eliminates the temptation to pick the best score or get confused on which target was the ‘record’ target when you get back from the range.

Some monthly matches may specify that the match target be shot without practice, “cold and on demandâ€, etc. in order to simulate a hunting or other real world situation.

How many targets can I print out and take to the range?

Only print out the number of targets appropriate for entry each month. There should be no “redo’s†. What you shoot on the match target is your final score.

What are “classesâ€

In order to make the competition fair the entries are segregated into classes. A class may be defined as a type of firearm (rifle, pistol, etc) and/or a caliber (.22 rimfire, centerfire, etc.) and/or the type of sighting system (iron sights, scoped, etc.). Obviously it would not be fair to have someone shooting a scoped rifle against a handgun in direct competition. Classes are designed to provide a general leveling of the playing field. Classes also allow for multiple entries by a single shooter each month. The match coordinator will define the number and type of classes available per shooter.

What if I don’t understand the rules or have a question?

Feel free to post any questions regarding the match in the Comments and Questions thread designated for that month. The match coordinator will be able to answer you question and clarify the rules if needed.

What if I don’t agree with something in the match?

You are free to post objections or comments (in a polite and civil way) in the Comments and Questions thread designated for that month. The match coordinator has the authority to decide all matters of policy regarding the match methods, scoring, etc. and has the final word. You are free to disagree but the match coordinators word stands.

I actually got lucky shooting #6 on my second try, but then missed eight times on #7 :( .

Not one of my best efforts, but at least I can still try one more time ;) .

Well, I tried it with a couple of rifles and as I expected, things went well and worse.

Rifle - Iron Sights

Anschutz 54M , .22 LR

12/15

The aiming point is very hard to see so I put the target for the second rifle next to me for reference. Youngsters with very good eyes should be able to do well with the right gear.

Rifle - Scoped, Advanced

Custom Rifle on a Sako Action, 30-338

3/12 --then I quit.

I just didn't have enough magnification to pull this one off, and I can't hold 1/4 minute of angle to boot. A tip of the hat to you rifle shooters.

Rules change!

PLEASE NOTE THESE RULE CHANGES FOR THE APRIL MATCH!

Shotgun Class: Iron Sights/Non-Magnified Optics

All shots will be taken from 30 feet with slugs only. The shotgun can be of any caliber, but must have iron sights or some kind of non-magnified optical site. Any position or rest: standing, kneeling, prone, bench, bipod, and/or sandbags.

Shotgun Class: Scoped

All shots will be taken from 60 feet with slugs only. The shotgun can be of any caliber and must have some kind of magnified optic. Any position or rest: standing, kneeling, prone, bench, bipod, and/or sandbags.

Number of Entries.

New number of entries rules is as follows. You may shoot as many firearms as you want. You may shoot a firearm only once. There are two exceptions. One is on the handgun classes if you take an optic off and on of a handgun, you can shoot that handgun in both handgun classes. Two is if you want to shoot the same rifle in the intermediate rifle class and the advanced rifle class. At this time I don't feel like making an exception for taking the scope on or off of a rifle.

So if you own say 10 iron sighted rifles and you want to make 10 entires in the iron sighted rifles class, go for it. Make sure you shoot each gun for only one entry and as always, you only get to use one target per gun. No second tries. If you own 30 handguns and want to shoot them all, go for it.

My thinking is if you have 20 rifles and you want to take the time to go out and shoot all of them and clean them afterwards, who am I to ruin your fun? Heck, if that is the case, you earned it!

Now, it is very important that you clearly label your scores as follows.

THR Member Name: _____________________

Class:______________________

Firearm/Caliber: _________________________

Score: _____ in ______

If you have any questions or comments about this rules change, please use the Comments and Questions Thread. Be safe, go have fun. Thank you.

I was entirely unable to hit the small box in "Exepmtions". I guess I have a family after all. :)

edit: You are quite right, El Rojo. I did misread the rules. Thanks for the heads up. :)

Jamz. It appears to me that you misread the rules.
Hit the 6a, the box, or the Yourself.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like you hit the 6a and the yourself. Therefore you get a 15/63. Please edit your score for me as soon as you can. The other funny thing is it looks like you put 5 or 6 rounds into line 72, shots 12 & 13. I don't know about you guys, but if I accidently hit 12 & 13 while going for shot 11, I would count that as good. Sure in your mind you know you didn't mean to, but sometimes a guy can get lucky. And this month, count your lucky hits.

Remember if you have discussion post it over in the
Questions and Comments Thread
. This month is going to be fun.

Sig 220ST iron sights 45 ACP

15 in 48. Curse you line 60!! :cuss:

I 'spose some are wondering where a guy learns to shoot like that. Well, as most already know, the US Navy has a very demanding and rigorous marksmanship program even for ordinary fleet sailors. At least when I was in waaay back in the last century.

Once a quarter we had to endure the harsh challenge of "famfire." Yes, it's every bit as tough as it sounds. We got a rattly 1911 and 6 rounds of hardball. Now get this, we had to shoot the ocean from the fantail while the ship was steaming along at 24 knots or better! It was tough! I have to say, I hit the ocean every time! Pretty remarkable shooting even if I say so myself. :)

Is it any wonder squids are so feared? :)

Tim

PS The one time "famfire" was interesting I blew it. Somebody tossed a big ol' CRT over the side while yours truly had an M14 and a full mag. Damn thing got away! I will never forgive myself. :)

Again, I got #6 in two tries, then got stumped on #7 :banghead: :cuss: . Must be because #6, while tiny, is also easy to see. I also had a lot of trouble with #10, just like Threadkiller.

Even though my score with the M39 is worse than my score with the M38 Swedish Mauser, I actually was more consistant with the M39 (my misses were closer  ). Go figure. . .

OK.......................finally got my targets in.

Don't have the new 1911-A1 sighted in to my liking yet, so I stuck with my .357Mag and Snubbie .38Spcl. Here are the results:

Pistol - Open Sights
Ruger Security Six 4" barrel .357Mag
15/24

Pistol - Open Sights
Rossi M68 2" barrel .38Spcl
15/29

Target pictures to follow (hopefully).

MAN-O MAN..................that #6 box and the Single slot ate my lunch.
Wonder if someone is trying to tell me something about my pending divorce. :what:

Boy am I tired.

I just finished cleaning all of my rifles at 0015 hours Sunday Morning. I shot about half of the guns I want to shoot today, I will take care of the other half tomorrow. I even finished shooting today in the headlights of the Nissan Sentra. Here goes.

El Rojo (all the way down)
Rifle: Iron Sights
M1 Garand / .30-06

Rifle: Iron Sights

15 in 34

Rifle: Iron Sights
Russian Mosin Nagant 91/30 / 7.62x54mm (using the car headlights)
4 in 17

I haven't bothered to turn on my desktop yet so no scans at this time. I must say that I thought I was going to do my best with the SKS. I started off getting the first 5 shots in one try! That Single and Yourself is tough. Then I totally blew it on little black box for shot 6. I took 11 shots to hit that no good son of a gun. I would have had an awesome score with out that screw up.

As it is turns up the Garand took the honors today. Tomorrow will be the scoped classes and the handguns. I am probably going to bring the wife too. If you don't get out this weekend, this match is extended till next weekend. Go out and have fun.

Since the server was down for a few days, you have until Wednesday to post any of the scores you shot this weekend. I shot in the rifle and handgun classes and will post my scores this evening when i got off of work.

And here are my last set of scores.

El Rojo (all the way down)

14 in 40

Rifle: Intermediate Class
FAB-10 with Bushmaster 20" V-match upper and Leupold 4-12 scope / .223
10 in 33

I was rather happy with the 15 in 15 with the bolt gun, but I was too chicken to try that one at 100 after doing so so with the FAB-10 at 50 yards. Plus you could only shoot each gun once.

Overall I liked this month. I thought it was fun.
