00 Buck

If I needed a gun solely for home defense and on a shoestring budget I'd buy a used Rem 870. Gun shop down the street has 1/2 dozen used 870's for under $225 a piece. If you aren't going concealed, don't pussy foot around and get a shotgun.

I voted for the Beretta 92... Why? I don't know anything about RIA .45's. Charter Arms is a serious piece of junk.

As for a carry gun the Glock 19 would be my first choice. It has to be the best carry gun I own.

I didn't really like your choices...

Of the hand guns listed, I voted the Beretta 92 FS. It is a great, reliable gun. If I were to select a gun to protect my family, I would feel comfortable with the Beretta, but it would not be my first choice.

If I were really concerned about self defense. I'd get a remington 870 with a magazine extension. In most cases, shot guns are better home defense weapons than any hand gun. Hand guns don't have stopping power. Shotguns have stopping power to spare. It doesn't matter how big the hand gun cartridge is, hand guns are lousy stoppers compared to shot guns.

My choice of defense hand guns would be much different than your list.

I would choose a 4" GP100 as a home defense hand gun. That is what I have for this application. If I wanted a autoloader, on a budget, I would probably go with a polymer gun. I would choose a glock, or a springfield XD. I would also consider the aluminum-framed Beretta 92 fs, but I'd prefer one of the two polymer guns that I listed. I would probably go with the G17 and get some good ammo.

I didn't vote.

Handguns are for those times when you are away from your long guns. For home defense, you have a high probability of being able to access long guns. There is no better home defense weapon than a reliable 12-gauge shotgun which is FAR more effective than any handgun provided that you use modern 9-pellet 00-buck to ensure good penetration.

Think about picking up a Remington 870 12-gauge with 18" barrel and be confident that you have a weapon that will be as effective as a submachine gun up to 15 yards.
