Do you ever deliberately avoid THR topics?

I'm the other way. If a mod has locked the thrread, I skip over it.

It usually means the presence of silly name calling, and a waste of my time and oxygen.

Drama? Some guy is ticked because no one is reading and agreeing with his manifesto, so he ticks off a mod?

I always imagine a teenager and an issue like curfew, "But, Mo-o-o-o-mmmmm...!"

Certainly gives you a read on people doesn't it? ;)

True colors show when folks are ticked, eh?

I agree with chico, in my real world some of the behavior i have seen here would get you knocked out, but the only way to k o a knucklehead behind a screen is to ignore him

That is what makes board discussion so fascinating and infuriating. Very few FTF social cues and rules directly apply.

p.s. and they never will, something new is being made.

Do you ever deliberately avoid THR topics?

Yes I try. That way I stay out of trouble. If you do not have any thing good to say , say nothing at all. I have the right to remain silent just not the ability.

This may sound radical, but I try to avoid threads where even I know, I know nothing about the subject. AK/AR threads come to mind. I suppose that at one time or another, I have held both, but I've never fired either.

I'm sure someone will tell me I don't ever know what I'm talking about, but on those subjects at least I THINK I know something or have some small ammount of experience.

And I'm even doing that, as well.

Not so much to "punish" some idiot. It's been my experience that idiots believe they are the life of the party.

But simply, I have to shave this face in the morning. (Actually, about every third morning, on average.) And while screwing a butthead into the ground like a carriage bolt is great fun at that moment, you have the rest of your life to replay your decision.

And if I approached stomping out idiots as a retirement job, I'd be pulling double shifts. Eh, who needs that?

Yes I do!

Certain kinds of posts strike me as nothing less than "Nutty".

Like the ones where the poster is fishing for all kinds of personal info, in the hopes that it will be given out. Usually, there's a whole regiment of people willing to freely give up the following:

(1) Whether they buy guns with cash, credit card, or check

(2) The full list of guns owned

(3) Where they store their guns

(4) Where they hide their guns

(5) How much ammo is stored at home, and where and how it is kept.

(6) Do you reload and what caliber and where is all of it kept

(7) Do you carry more than one gun or keep one in the car, truck, or van?

(8) Where do you hide it in the car, truck, or van

I mean pardon me, but unless I have proof that WALT DISNEY himself is asking for such information, I ain't giving nothing out.

If someone suggested: "Maybe you're paranoid?"

I would have to suggest, that just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean someone isn't out to getcha!

:what:

----------------------------------------------------------

Besides that, I will avoid where there are Toxic and overly argumentive people, who want to hash through complex abstractions to the point of utter absurdity. You know the kind...they seem to assume everyone in the gun forum is their natural borne enemy, and nobody knows stuff but them?

I will post often where someone shares a personal story or a news item.

I will discuss bad service in a gun store, but I don't think its very interesting when someone uses the forum to trash a major manufacturer because they had some difficulty with service.
A specific complaint is okay, but a whole company isn't bad because of one bad incident.

------------------------------------------------------

I also avoid dialogue that is just plain gloomy or down, like everyone is supposed to treat every human encounter or incident like it was an Ole West Saloon Gunfight, and if I'm not all grim-faced and cold-hearted about it, I shouldn't dare comment.

--------------------------------------------------

I love topics wherein posters flaunt their technical knowledge and expertise. You can't find knowledgeable people just anywhere. Here, there really are lots of experienced people, and sometimes I practically fall down laughing the way they UNDERSTATE everything.

:scrutiny::what:

Patches designating misleading unearned authority will help. But the real kicker is story telling, especially relating tales of bravery that someone else accomplished.

Well, I had to be brief, I was in the middle of polishing my "CCW License Holder" badge. I do have a family image to uphold, my brother saved, like, 300 people in 'nam using the same equipment I carry today.

The old' "What gun do I get for my woman?" question. It's done.

I would however read a thread titled, "I have this gun and I want to get it a woman, what should I look for?"

Seems like more and more ignored topics get added to the list latley. Maybe I've been around THR long enough now to have covered all the available topics.

The newest one on my ignore list....any thread where the OP contains zero paragraphs.

I refuse to wade through a page long post with no paragraphs (bonus points for heavy use of run-on sentences and no punctuation).

The use of a million commas to separate sentences is a similarly strange practice. I just skip those posts.

you know the one's,,,,they aren't frequent,,,,but they are as distinctive,,,,as they are annoying,,,please stop doing that,,,,you,,,,are,,,,driving,,,,me,,,,in,,,,sane,,,,!

In a very real sense we're discussing common courtesy. Don't make us regret signing on, and don't insult our intelligence with tales of the mall.

I'm starting to hit the "search" feature more and more, and if you're going to use the word 'ninja' it better be in conjuction with the words "14th century" and "Japanese."

I love my 1911s, but here's a topic where a quick search should always be attempted.

I totally disagree. A lot of the things we have been discussing are quite new mores and behaviors. Not at all common. I've been connected since the early, early 90's and the currently accepted internet behaviors grew out of those early days from a relatively small online population who were/are from closely related generations. There are very few FTF communication behaviors that directly overlay online communication behaviors.

Also, there's a tin-foil hat part of me that wonders if our posts are being catalogued somewhere. Crazy, I know.

Make sure your tin foil hat is securely grounded. Of course the posts are recorded. Should, God forbid, you ever get in a situation involving guns and THE LAW everything you have ever posted here will be dragged out by malevolent shysters. Therefore it is not a good idea to say you would kill someone crossing your lawn and barbeque the corpse. (Being facetious- not advocating shooting trespassers or cannibalism.) :D

I usually avoid posting on certain threads, but there's not many threads that I avoid. I don't go into the legal section or any political threads though. I do however, read most of the stories that are written in General Gun, because even if they're about terrorist zombies, they are flat out entertaining.

AD/ND threads ...

What a man does in the privacy of his own home is his business. ;)

If I've learned anything from this thread is that I'm going to try to moderate to which things I answer.

Unless I want to underline a certain stand or idea, it's important to remember that not everyone reads your written thoughts--or even cares.
