Garage sale psycho today...

Gary1911, read closer. I didn't have it on me his first visit, it did discourage him the second time around. Maybe he still ran his mouth, but I can deal with that a lot better than him stabbing me. Xavier, I flat out don't have the money to spare for a CC permit here. I tried to get his plate #, but there was a trailer hitch in the way and the plate was scratched to hell, I did give the officer a partial #. As for people knowing about good stuff I own, the only item I had for sale priced over $5 was the Mauser.

From now on, any knives at my garage sales will be in a case of some sort, and I'll be carrying. If it offends someone, let them go somewhere else.

As I'm about to call the cops, a black&white driven by a cop I know pulls into the parking lot next door. I stow my sidearm in my car, walk over and tell him about it, and he takes off after the nutjob.

so if you knew the cop, and cops know you carry, and you are on your own property, why ditch the gun in the car before speaking to the cop?

Because it's still not a good idea to advance toward a cop with a gun on your hip, and he was on someone else's property.

People often legally open carry on their own property because:
1. Access to the firearm is easier
2. Open carry is more comfortable
3. The presence of a firearm is a deterrent.

What could you have done better?

If you had a CCW permit, you could have had your firearm legally concealed and been protected the first time.

You could have written down the guy's license plate number and given a good description of the van.

I have been carrying for so many years when in the yard every neighbor no longer takes notice of me N my HK USP wandering about. The good part is I just bought a Farm (can you say big shooting range) where I again wear my HK in the open while wandering about, Made one of the neighbors real nervous I found out why, he is on the list... you know the one of sex / assault that they post in the net, funny he was the only one that it bothered. BTY been CCW for a long time too.

My suggestion would be to keep the knives out of reach of people browsing your garage sale, but in sight. I had a yard sale last spring, and was trying to sell an old Blackjack Ek knife. With three adults and two teens running the sale, it was easy to keep the dangerous items, as well as high dollar items, out of reach of shoppers. Yet we could pick up on somebody's interest in those items and give them the sales pitch too.

Open carry if you like, and if it's legal where you live. My preference would be to conceal a pistol on my belt, like always, and have a long gun quickly accessible inside the house.

Just a thought.... allowing him to see that you had a hogleg on the hip apparently gave him reason enough to return to his vehicle. In this case he was leaving. But a guy who's wanting to swap pills for a knife and willing to be nasty when told no may be the kind to return to his vehicle to retrieve the old double barreled goose gun instead of leaving. Wackos are called that for a reason, you can never know for sure what they will do next because even they don't always know what they will do next.

sounds like you did a pretty good job to me too. Did one of the other people at your sale call the police, or did he just happen to show up?

Unless you have some very screwy laws in your state, you probably can carry concealed in your state on your own property.

You cannot carry concealed without a CCW permit in Louisiana. It does not matter whether you own the patch of dirt you are standing on or not. You can, however, have a firearm concealed on your property, such as in a drawer or a glove box, just not concealed on your person.

I'm hearing some good points for having and not having yard/garage sales. Some of which I've never given much thought to as the behavior of the obvious bad guy may warrant. Although very possible, the small town I live in it's not very probable that this may happen here.
I'm glad for you that it turned out without you getting hurt. What I do regret for decent society is that the dope-head sob is likely still driving around. From your description, the world would be a better place without him. At least IMHO. Also reaffirms my belief that if you carry a weapon for protection, you need it with you or readily accessible at all times. Although some are safer than others, there are few absolute safe places.

Xrayboy, I was watching his hands till he drove off. ZorQmega, I didn't have to call them as one happened to show up as I was starting to dial.

Not having been there, it is difficult to Monday morning quarterback you, but if the guy had wanted to sink the knife into the first time, he would have done it. If you do not know about the Tueller Drill , read up on it at the link I provided. If he was waving the knife three feet away from you, he could have killed you with it and you could not have stopped him.

Total disagreement here. There are actions you can take to avoid getting stabbed or minimize the damage. Take a Tom Sotis or Marc Denny class to find out how.

We will have to agree to disagree then. I am familiar with Escrima and Amok. I stand by my statement.

Two things:

#1: It's hilarious that he wanted to trade his anti-psychotic meds for your knife. I suppose he didn't think he needed to take them anymore.

#2: Criminals will find whatever weapons they need in your home. This reminds me of Clayton Cramer's story about crooks breaking into his house -- the first thing they went for was the butcher block.

#3: Based on your story, I've decided I'm never going to have a garage sale. In the next-to-worst-case scenario, which is what you've described, it gives any loony or crook the excuse to check out your house.

Some people need to loosen up the straps on their tin foil hat I think its cutting off blood to the brain.

I think ya done good!

I enjoy yard sales personally I also open carry on my property and wish I could every where (that whole bare arms thing). If you are afraid that someone is going to notice you have good stuff because you either have a sale or open carry... just wow. If they are going to steal from you then they are going to steal from you a yard sale or open carry would encourage them to do so. But seeing you have that gun on might just change their minds a wee bit and they move on to better prey.

One thing I do when the wife has a sale in the garage, use tarps to cover up the "good" side of my garage. There half is good for 2 cars or a sale, mine is where really neat steel targets come from.

Then again, if you are in my house you have to look pretty hard to figure out if I own a gun or not, Amer. Rifleman usually gives it away.

The only thing you maybe should have done differently here is to have been carrying (concealed or otherwise) at the start of the garage sale, not after things went a little weird. NOT to deter anyone, but so that you could protect yourself in the event someone (like this weirdo) decided that he liked the knife so much that he was willing to stab you for it.
