"Gun guy" Attitudes

What I se a lot of on here is talk about how someone said something at the shooting range so you really put him in his place and he left. Maybe it actually happened once, but not likely. I like the guys that talk about selling a gun because it was junk, then also say they only buy used guns because they are better. Seems like sticking a lot of extra gadgets on a AR-15 makes you know more about guns. Maybe you automatically get to be a Navy SEAL as soon as you own a gun that requires 7 batteries to make everything work. The guys that go to the public shooting range wearing body armor and some outfit with lots of nylon straps just look silly. Especially if they say "operator" a lot. I am just as likely to be a jerk in real life as I am on the internet.

I don't think its a gun thing. I think it is a social media thing.
Yes, partially, it's a human thing, a well documented human thing. It's called "Us vs Them" or "Othering" . Every one of us does it to one degree or another in different areas of our lives, it's built into our DNA.

Here's a very basic overview.

Othering is a phenomenon in which some individuals or groups are defined and labeled as not fitting in within the norms of a social group. It is an effect that influences how people perceive and treat those who are viewed as being part of the in-group versus those who are seen as being part of the out-group.

Othering also involves attributing negative characteristics to people or groups that differentiate them from the perceived normative social group.

It is an “us vs. them” way of thinking about human connections and relationships. This process essentially involves looking at others and saying "they are not like me" or "they are not one of us."

Type A and Type B personality hypothesisdescribes two contrasting personality types. In this hypothesis, personalities that are more competitive, highly organized, ambitious, impatient, highly aware of time management, or aggressive are labeled Type A, while more relaxed, less "neurotic", "frantic", "explainable" personalities are labeled Type B.
Right. Then the competitive, ambitious, and aggressive traits fall by the wayside when it's time for them to put up or shut up.

Oh!

Oh!

I have one!

How about those guys who barge into threads trying to “dominate” the discussion, later posting tasteless pictures of their “custom” rifles to lend credence into what great, smart shooters they are?

Yes, some are like that, just like "Chevy/Ford" guys on car forums, "Evinrude/Mercury" guys on boat forums and "Chicken Mamas" on Backyard Chicken Forum ... They will make sure to "help" you get it right.

And let's not even mention "Bernina" owners on sewing forums where everything else is just "Junk". :neener: (My mom is a Bernina snob and had a cow when my wife bought a "Singer" ...

Things get heated even more on cooking knifes where "Henckels/Wüsthof" owners try to justify why their knives have to cost so much more ... :p (Although I am a Wüsthof owner, I use daily $22 Cuisinart knife set from Costco and recommend KitchenAid and Kuma knives to others ... Magic is in the $7 whetstone and I only sharpen my cooking knives once or twice a year but hone them regularly ;))

And shall we go on to "Apple/Android" owners or "Benchmade/Cold Steel" owners or even perhaps "Leatherman/Gerber" to "Snap On/Harbor Freight"? :) (Hey, HF hand tools come with no questions asked life-time warranty )

I probably need professional help because I am a 1911 "gun guy" who appreciates Glocks ... So am I "bipolar"? :what:

Yamaha Outboards, get with the program!:)

Interest in firearms started in Boy Scouts, then Explorer Scouts followed by USMC. After my USMC Days I stayed away from firearms for an extended period of time. Then there was the random killing incidents in my area of residence by one deranged individual. With that occurrence I applied for and received a concealed carry permit. I also started participating DCM High-Power Rifle matches. Now in the mid part of my seventh decade we no longer participate in rifle matches. We do have a CWP for our state of residence and also have a handgun range on our property an I'm also a land share owner of a shooting association. As for handguns have little interest in the next newest thing. With that said the handguns that I have suffice for our applications.

This has been a funny read. I empathize with meeting the jerks. It's also made me think about some of the "gun guys" I've had the pleasure to be around. Mostly while volunteering for the hunter sight ins our club sponsors. I reckon most of them remember when Kennedy was president and have wildcated at least one cartridge. One has published books and edited at least one edition of "Cartridges of the World." Tons of knowledge. I feel fortunate to be around those guys.

One of the best features about HR is in moderating away that sort of dis-unifying, divisive, and non-community flaming. None of which does much good. For any of the parties.

Sadly, the wheels are often measured by the squeakiest. And makes it far too easy to generalize in negative ways.
Watch how gun owners park--it's easy to notice the ones who are clearly selfish and clueless--but, despite the prevalence, are actually the exception, not the rule. But, it's the exceptions that stick in our minds.

Everyone is the main character, in the story of their own life. Living in a largely imaginary universe, where they are the very center - the star, the protagonist, the axis - about which everything else orbits.

Add in the anonymity of the internet - removing the threat of social repercussions - and It's hard to understand why more people aren't complete and total (#@$s.

I've seen some of that attitude on some internet sites, but very little in the real world.

Part of the problem is that some "gun guys" get offended too easily. For example the 6.5 CM is either the most loved, or most hated round in existence. Not a lot of middle ground. I was slow to accept the round, but can honestly say that it live up to the hype. Some "gun guys" get offended when someone points out the factual information showing it's advantages over their preferred cartridge. It works both ways.

If you wanna use your 6.5cm to shoot a cape buffalo at 500yards more power to ya. Just let us know when the funeral is when that thing charges you and stomps you to death.
.

Shooting one at 500 yards might be a stretch, but the 6.5 CM is a slightly more potent round than 6.5X55 ( with factory loads). The 6.5X55 has been killing cape buffalo, elephant, and every other animal on the planet since 1891.

One thing I always do is remind my customers that I'm a complete and total gun snob, and that they should never take my opinions on anything personally. :)

The thing about "gun guys" is that we're generally pretty conservative and objective. You can't BS yourself into being a better shot, afterall. So each of us spends this time in our lives pursuing "the right way" to do things. And through our experimentation and (substantial) investment, we solve those questions for ourselves. The answer thus found, we naturally wish to share our results with our fellows, and may feel quite incensed when a different result is presented as invalidating our own experience. It's easy to pay lip service to the forces of individual physical quirks and the power of dumb luck, but quite another to really accept them as explanations for the situation where two people both start with 2+2, with one totaling 3 and the other totaling 5, and both of them being correct for themselves.

I like those kind of gun guys on the range. Funny how it works out that most of them can't shoot worth a darn, which leaves them open to being shown up on the range.

Looks like next year is going to be a bucket list year for me and I'll be able to get one of the guns I've wanted for nearly 4 decades now: a .475 Wildey Magnum.

When it comes in, it'll be going to the range with me every time I go, whether I intend to shoot it or not. Because everybody needs an a@#$@le gun standing by for that ONE overbearing...errr..."gun guy" who needs to be upstaged.

Well unless your part of their little group, which I'll never be. Guess at 63 I'm not old enough.

There are some doozies out there. That's why I pick my friends carefully and keep my mouth shut and my typing mostly to myself. I generally get really good comments from people when I ask for advice. A few turds show up, but are easily ignored.

THR is the only place, on the internet or in person, where I listen to or make gun comments. Almost all other contacts I have involve people who aren’t knowledgeable about guns or the 2A. Which really shows the library of knowledge in this forum.

So it’s not surprising that people you meet at work or at the range don’t know about guns and cartridges.

But I wouldn’t call them gun guys. May be more accurate to call them gun owners.

“Backyard Chickens: My pet makes me breakfast”

Had no idea they would be such a massive forum.

If you can back up your position what does it matter? I believe what I believe cause of, my experience, track records and actual evidence. Does anyone really think they are not going to be subjected to the idiocy and near mental illness of others who clearly don't know what the hell they are talking about? lol

I refrained from expressing doubts about paying for a Crown Grade Krieghoff on county pay.
Crown Grade, huh? There's definitely another income source there....

Perhaps they prefer quality over quantity? You guys likely wouldnt be batting an eye if the person rolled up in a new pickup that can cost 6 figures now-a-days.

Yet show up with gun that people could save for if they put their mind to it. They are up to something?

I know DuPont used to finance Krieghoff purchases, not sure if they still do. I know gun prices better than pickup prices anyway. ;)

If anyone knows about saving up for a Trap gun, it's me.

Crown Grades are nice, no doubting the quality, maybe he had an inheritance.;)
