I carry a Walther P22 for self defense due to how small it is, it is very easy to conceal.
I can't decide to use Hollow Points or normal ammo...
Last summer my friend shot me in the foot with a hollow point .22, it fragmented and the majority of the bullet stopped within 2-3 inches. If you were trying to take someone out and shot them in the chest, 2-3 inches wouldnt cut it...

So a normal round nose wouldnt fragment and would go deeper and farther, but the damage would be minimal....

So I currently loaded up my magazine every other, Hollow, Normal, Holllow, Normal

What are your thoughts?

CCI Mini-Mags and Velocitors seem to be pretty popular.

You'll also get plenty of people telling you to get a gun in a larger caliber, such as a P3AT.

Yes I hear that, but I also hear its all about shot placement, a shot to the arm is just as worthless from a .45.
Well placed head or chest shots from a .22 will still take someone out
Plus the .22 is very quick and accurate to shoot, so putting 5 rounds into a small area can be done in seconds.

Doesn't sound like much of a friend to me! Did you kick his a$$ with your good foot :D ? Hey, glad to hear you are alright, it couldn've been worse. I was almost shot it the foot once. The 22 LR bullet wound up in someone else's foot right next to me.

If you feel confident with 22 because you can shoot it good, then a 22 will work for you. I would however stick to a high quality FMJ round of some type. Maybe someone can suggest a good brand and weight.

haha :) I didnt know what happend at first, I thought someone through a rock at me, i just looked around for 5 seconds to see what hit my foot then realized it was my friends rifle misfired. :)

.22 is no .40SW, but Ill take it over a knife, and its almost as easy to conceal as a knife.

Just to play Devil's Advocate ........

Shooting the bad guy repeatedly is going to raise a lot of questions about why you didn't stop after 1 shot.

Generally speaking I feel most comfortable with regular ball from 9mm down. From .40 up I think the HP makes more sense cause there is less issue with penetration. So how's the foot????:D

Not when they put the 10 rds of .22 together and realize they have 1 .45!!!! :D

Stick with solid .22lrs. With such a wimpy round, you really want to get penetration to hit vital organs and also a better chance of piercing bones such as ribs and skull. Also might need that extra penetration to go thru a heavy leather jacket.

Think about this: if a .22HP fragments, it's doing something that it's not supposed to; a HP is supposed to expand in order to create a larger wound channel. Fragments created from a .22lr aren't big enough to cause much more tissue damage so it will not contribute anything worthwhile towards bleed-out debilitation.

The smaller the bullet, the more you have to consider adequate penetration.

My rule of thumb is that anything under .380 suffers from some penetration issues and one should stick with solids. I would much rather end up with a bullet that doesnt expand than one that gets stuck in a rib.

I agree with solids for the reasons already stated.

Not as big an issue as you might think. Many BGs are shot with 9mm, 357, 45 multiple times before they stop. You are shooting to stop if it takes 1 or 10. If you are in such a situation and your lawyer says he's having trobule defending your multiple shots get a better lawyer.

I carry my P-22 when out mowing on my place, loaded with CCI Velocitors... it is a great gun/round for snakes, and other vermin...

If I was carrying it as a daily CCW, then it would be loaded with CCI Velocitors! :D
