Lookin' good, P51D. Glad you found this month's match to be both enjoyable and instructive.

Sporter-irons-50yds-prone

Rainy and breezy - but the range was empty!:D

This is prone with a Mossberg 44 US from the CMP. Williams peeps. I'm seeing 94 unless I've scored wrong.

Shot another target from sitting with a 39A that was doing real well off the bench - but boy I was spraying 'em sitting! A sling makes a ton of difference... Don't think I'll be putting sling swivels and studs in the 39 though...;)

shootr, not bad for a nasty day like you describe...but any day at the range is a good one. :)

Here's my entry for 50 yd, iron sights division. I think it scored 80. I can tell that I haven't shot rimfire seriously in awhile. Been concentrating more on skeet this summer. It was fun and some guys couldn't believe I was shooting the 10/22 from 50 yards with iron sights. I have to admit it was hard to see the target clearly. Weather: sunny and clear, wind highly variable, temp about 80*.

MJ, you may have not done as well as you would have liked, but make no mistake about it, this month isn't the easiest match. I think you did well.

:)

+1 What Mav said.

I can't even SEE the iron sights of a 10/22, let alone hit anything at 50 yards with one - that's good shooting!

Agree on this month's target and range too. Not as easy as it might appear. 50 and 100 are farther than many shoot and 100 especially so. Throw in wind, old, tired eyes and the tendency to shoot a string of good shots and then a flyer or two right at the end, and frustration can become a factor as well. At least for me.

Thank you for the kind words. I shot 40 rounds yesterday. 20 to tune up and sight in, 10 at the first attempt and then the one I entered. After that I was very mentally fatigued, so I went home. It is a lot of work to shoot a lightweight rifle like the 10/22 at 50 yards. I could have used another couple of pounds in the gun. On the plus side I saw a skink running around down by the target board. It's the first one I've ever seen in my life and one of only two native lizard species in Michigan. I counted myself quite fortunate to have seen it.

Yes shooting at 50 and 100yds can be challenging but if you dont challenge yourself you wont get any better:)

Target

So I was hoping to get in a last minute entry this Saturday, is anyone else having trouble with the target website? It appears to be down or gone now, so if anyone can post a copy of the original for me? Otherwise I might shoot at someone's scanned pdf.

Also KSCCHTrainer, I don't think it counts if you just poke the middle of the target with a pen. :D In all seriousness though, that is a some fantastic shooting, what kind of target ammo are you using?

No problem, saved a copy just for an incident like this...here you go:

I did thoroughly enjoy shooting the 10/22 at 50 yards. With some regular practice at that distance I could thrill and amaze my shooting pals :)

Who knew that a 10/22 could cycle without an extractor? :what: Mine did just that this afternoon, after what was presumably a overcharged round (other explanations welcome) blew out my extractor. Whilst I was disappointed that it happened at all, I was pretty impressed that it cycled. It would jam about once per magazine (stovepiping), and tended to throw brass nearly straight forward, but I still find that pretty impressive! :D

Also determined that I need to shim the base (1-pc. base/rings) for a little more elevation, the CenterPoint just isn't cutting it (though it was workable due to the mil-dot reticle).

Plan to shoot again by or before Sat., so I won't share my results (but I don't believe it was horribly bad for a malfunctioning rifle with a factory sporter bbl) yet.

:)

Good on ya Mav - sounds like one heck of an effort!

IMO, Ruger 1022s are incredible little guns. Rugged, accurate and you can shoot the heck out of them.

Have to agree, though mine has taken a replacement part before (did some unnecessary modifications, but only one part was ever actually needed for reliable operation). The extractor died (just got worn and wouldn't reliably extract) after about 20k rounds, popped in a Volquartsen replacement and it has been plinkin' along for well over double that amount again (somewhere in the neighborhood of 50k more). This will be the second replacement (probably not needed if I could find the one that popped out), but with the rounds that I have put through it I can't very well complain about that.

:)

Made it to the range one more time. Beautiful day, had the range all to myself

Hey!
My pen has a bigger barrel diameter than that hole!!!

Federal match grade 40 grain solids was the ammo. I've tried RWS, SK and Eley target ammo in this Anschutz 1451ST. It likes the cheaper Federals best for some reason. I don't shoot matches with 'em, but I practice with the Federal 40 grain bulk pack "target" stuff from Walmart.

I used to be under the (apparently mistaken) idea that match grade .22 barrels had to be kept "squeaky clean" until someone told me to quit cleaning it until I either changed ammo or the groups started to open up. BINGO! That was the thing that did the trick.

Until that, I'd get 2 or three fliers every group until the barrel got fouled enough (50-60 rounds most times) and I didn't understand what was happening until a wiser old salt than I clued me in. Dang, I love it when a plan comes together!

Yup I havent cleaned the barrel of my Kimber for some time and today showed it needs a cleaning . I couldnt get decent groups for nothing

That's what I love about THR and the other "friendly" gun boards. Even at 68, I manage to learn something new every day. (Sometimes every hour or less!)

Thanks for putting this on Maverick
NP, Orlando, thanks for participating. :)

Yeah, I noticed how horrible your target looked (yep, that one...the one with the perfect score).

Great shooting Orlando! Looks like your rifle likes that Wolf ME ammo too. Good stuff!

Wasnt happy with the way it shot today. Think the bore needs a cleaning but I'm gonna start looking for a different ammo to try also

Well, this is a good time to head over to Port Clinton and pick up a good selection of things to try. Don't ask me how I know!

KSC and Orlando - I've heard about the "don't clean it until it shoots poorly" plan from a few different sources. When you say you don't clean them, do you mean you just put them back in the rack/safe/cabinet when you're done? I can't yet bring myself to do that, for fear of rust in the bore, so I feel compelled to run an oiled patch down the bore. Am I worrying too much?
