oh,,,btw,,,you ARE missing 14" of snow with 13 Degrees and winds to 45 mph at the moment,,,who wouldnt want to live in that?

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt.
Did Massachusetts for 15 years, Rochester, NY for 5 years, and Burlington, VT for 8 years. We had our share of snow and cold.

Glad to be in TX now. But talk to me again in a few months when it will be 100 degrees here.:D

well I finally just read this thread to see what these virtual matches are all about .. and damn this sounds like fun .. going to the range tomorrow .. will post results soon after ..

the heat i can take,,,

but the humidity?? :barf:

if your cold you can always put more clothes on,,,but if youre hot theres only so many clothes you can take off,,,

Yaay, looks like my pistol permit will FINALLY come in next week (remember, kids, always leave enough time to renew before your current one expires) so I might be able to get in part two of the January match.

Any clues on what the Feb. match will be? :D (Hint: I have a .22 rifle, an M-44, a .22 pistol, and a .45 pistol) ;)

I'll be shooting this in the morning! How LOW can I go...... ?
I have a Baikal IZH-35M .22 that shoots great at 50' with Federal Gold Medal. :neener:

conditions- damn cold even inside unheated range, frozen big toe more than likely lead to poor results

:banghead: damn flyer :cuss:

:D

Okay, two guns with two targets each, offhand, at 50 ft.:

Ruger 22/45 w/ Ultradot, Wolf Match Target ammo: Low Ring 9, 90 pts. Twice. 90 / 100 pts.

Sig 220 ST, WWB: 1st Low Ring 9, 90 pts. 2nd Low Ring 8, 80 pts. 85 / 100 pts.

Man, that was hard. I shot two shots, put my pistol down, then shot another two, put it down, etc. I'm exhausted from all the concentration.

No more competitions for me. Takes the fun out of plinking w/ my .22!! :D

It rained last week, so I just made it under the deadline by going today. . except now I see the deadline has been extended by one week, so if you haven't done it yet, you still have time ;) . Here's how I did  :

:( I hope I do better next time. Oh, and the weather was cool, about 60 degrees and a little overcast.

Any clues on what the Feb. match will be?

OK all. Yup, this months match was a difficult one. What can I say.
To those that haven't tried it yet, remember that I have extended the deadline until 2/9 so you still have a chance.

I plan to post next months match on 2/2 (I still have a few finishing touches that are needed). I can tell you this: The February match will require some accuracy and some strategy but the ranges and task will be less demanding than last month. There will be pistol and rifle classes so everyone should be able to play. "That's all I have to say about that."

Holding a wobble zone, cold and on demand, inside of the 9 ring for 30 rounds is incredible. Do you compete? Just curious which discipline and at what level?

I am going to shoot the targets this afternoon when it warms up. Just looking at the targets, I think hell would freeze over before I could shoot inside the 9 ring with a .45 so I am going to use a .38 Super Open gun. I might have a chance with the smaller bore diameter and optics.

With the .22lr, it wasn't so hard. That gun practically shoots itself. With the .45, I REALLY think it was luck. I was sweating that string out, big time. Ask Beetle Bailey. There were two shot that were BARELY inside the 9 ring. Beetle and I went up to examine the target to see if it was legit, and since the white of the ring was still on the paper, we decided to give me the benefit of the doubt. The 80 I shot I think is more indicative of what I'd normally shoot. That Sig is accurate!

No, I don't shoot competitively at all. I'm just a weekend plinker. I go with Beetle every weekend. My favorite thing to do lately is to shoot my 10" steel plate at 50 yds with my pistols. Prolly good practice for this event. :)

I'm sure real competitors could shoot rapid fire through my groups w/o touching the paper. ;)

That was some fine shooting BamBam. It sounds like you scored it properly - if the ring wasn't really broken then it would be counted as a 9.

As you say, I'm sure there are bullseye shooters who could do as well - one handed, but it still is an achievement.

BamBam-31:

Yeah, with a .22 I would suspect there are a lot of bullseye shooters who could shoot a "90" day in and day out, but with a .45 that is just awesome. Also, doing it cold and on demand is really tough. Being that consistent for forty rounds is nothing to scoff at.

What a day....

First off, somebody needs to explain how the scoring works...the 700-5X or whatever it is...I have never understood it.

Second off, here are my targets. Rimfire wasn't bad, but centerfire was a whole 'nother story.

Target 1, Standard rimfire. Low 7.

Target 2, Standard rimfire. Low 8.

Target 1, Standard centerfire. Low 0.

Target 2, Standard centerfire. Low 0.

esheato - Thanks for your entry and thanks for posting your targets. Based on what I can see I would score your targets as:

Rimfire = 70, 80 Average = 75, No X's so that would be 75x0

Centerfire = 0, 0 Average = 0, perhaps 2 X's which is 0 x2

Don't be too hard on yourself. You are in good company this month.

So how are the regular nums and the X's factored in for the score?

The first number is your avg between the 2 targets, but what do the X's count towards? Tie-breaker possibly?

I guess this is motivation...lol

BTW, thanks for putting this on...it was great fun and I'm sure you'll see my name in the other matches over the year. Now if I could just get some of my local shooting buddies to shoot it too.

esheato...

Traditionally, targets are scored on a scale of 100 points in many organized matches. I tried to design this moths virtual match to fit that mold. As you surmised, the X's are used a tie-breakers. In this match the X's have a kinda weird meaning but I wanted something that could be used to break a tie and that seems to work.

Now that you understand the scoring used this month (I hope) you can forget it for next month...It will be very different.

Glad you enjoyed it. Safe fun is the name of the game!

Aaarrrggg!! I cheated!! A thousand apologies. The gist of the competition was explained to me by Beetle Bailey, so I never bothered to actually read the entire thread for all the rules. Mea culpa.

My scores should be amended as follows:

Ruger 22/45 w/ Ultradot: First target w/ CCI Blazer: Low Ring 7, 70 / 100 pts. Noticed POI was high right and pistol didn't like CCI Blazer, so I switched to Wolf and adjusted the scope. Second target w/ Wolf: Low Ring 9, 90 / 100pts. I then shot three more match targets for fun (90, 80 90).

Average: 80 / 100 pts. for Open Rimfire Class.

Sig 220 ST: I use this pistol mainly to shoot my steel plate at 50 yds, and the sights are zeroed perfectly for this w/ a 6:00 hold. I knew I'd shoot high at 50 ft., so I shot five shots at an extra match target to get my POI. First two shot were 12:00 on the 5 ring. Aiming lower, last three shots were 6:00 in the 8 ring. Ah-ha! I then shot the two strings of 90 and 80 points. Score should then be: First target: Low Ring 5, 50 / 100 pts (assuming, of course, that the rest of my shots would have been no worse than the 5 had I finished this target). Second target: Low Ring 9, 90 / 100 pts.

Average: 70 / 100 pts. for Standard Centerfire Class.

(BTW, I never noted the X's because I didn't think I'd shoot a high enough score to actually need them.)

Had I known that I couldn't use the match targets for zeroing, I could have used some other target first and shot my original results. Oh, well. Serves me right for not reading everything. I guess that's what Ankeny was referring to when he said "cold and on demand."

Please amend accordingly, and sorry again for the inconvenience. I'll read the thread next time....

fyi,,,

i am a "real" pistol target shooter one handed with my MKII

i shoot,,,well,,,280plus out of 300 on better days at 50 feet

thats actually pretty good, puts me near to the top of the nra expert rating,,,,

my scores usually put me up with the top 10 experts around here, more like #4 or #5 in most cases

i went into this one knowing i'd never shoot a 100 (self defeating thought btw)

hoping i'd shoot a 90

figuring i'd shoot an 80

unless i had a flyer and shot a 6 or a 5 or something :D

to shoot a 90 in this is phenomenal (sp?) shooting

really,,,

if you were to practice the formalities and nuances of shooting target competitions you would place very well,,,

it's great fun and if you're cheap like me you only have to shoot .22 and it stays relatively inexpensive

unless you get the bug and start buying them premium guns,,,

:D

oh,,,and yes there are a few out there who COULD put their entire rapid fire string in the 10 ring on that target with ease

but, almost without exception, them folks are some really dedicated shooters

theres always that natural around who never practices, downs a big basket of fried clams and french fries and then goes right out and shoots in the mid to high 290's

i seen it done,,,

:what:

p.s. when you shoot like that,,,the manufacturers GIVE you guns

p.p.s. the reason i don't shoot higher??

flyers

if i could tame those i'd probably gain 8 to 10 points:fire:

i'm working on it,,,

my best score (in practice) since i took up shootin' again = 291

haven't seen that in a while though

esheato,,,

them "i sucks" were probably more the gun and ammo than you?

still, youre on the paper at 50 ft,,,thats good all by itself!!

:D

Wow.... Low ring 0, on both... LOL. I'm really, really bad at this.
I think my red-dot is way off. ;)

This is what I did:
a) walk in the range, post 2 targets side by side
b) load up 2 magazines, 10 rounds each
c) finish the first mag on the 1st target
d) finish the second mag on the 2nd target

This is way too much fun, too depressing.
