This happened over a month ago, but I just seen him for the first time since the incident. He's 17, plays on the high school football team as a linebacker. He's a big kid, last I seem him in his normal state he was easily 260lbs if not more.

The parents told me he was walking home from school, some kids gathered and where shouting "fight!" The neighbor's son was heading towards the crowd when someone shouted, "gun!" Most of the kids drop to the floor, but he was on his cell phone. The gunman was aiming at another kid but accidently hit him instead. The shooter then ran off while the kid who was shot ran in the opposite direction.

I don't know how far he ran, but he said he remembered collapsing and waking up in the hospital. Has been there for over a month.

The doctors told the parents it was a .38, struck his right shoulder , bounced around in his body, and hit his heart twice. They had to cut into his throat for some reason and I see these feeding tubes hooked up to his stomach. They said for most of his time spent in the hospital he was sleeping and hooked up to machines. Now he looks like he only weights 100 lbs.

Yes, it is sad to hear of such things and I'm sure all here will be pulling for the kid to recover.

This is almost more of an S&T thread than a Handguns thread. But the lesson learned is one we should all already know: Is running toward a fight a smart idea? No. Bad things happen to good people, and the closer you are to trouble the more likely it is that you'll be the good person bad things happen to.

The first rule of gunfighting is to be someplace else.
