Pistol With Style ($1000 Max)

When the deciding factor is style, it don't get no better than a traditional looking revolver in a uncommon configuration.

This S&W 686 with a 5'' barrel and unfluted cylinder just screams style. It also shoots very well.

try an old model 28 if you are afraid of scratching a 27. the 28 will get down and dirty without a second thought.

mine is a dash2 with the pinned barrel and recessed chambers. suggest that as the lockwork and overall fit and finish of the weapon is excellent.

125gn XTP's at over 1400fps is strong medicine. accurate, too.

pics are pretty bad, but you get the idea.

I think I may have found the one that really gets my blood pumping. The 627 Hunter! But from what I've read, they're hard to come by and people rarely want to sell them. Seems like that's the kind of taste I have in guns. :banghead:

In my book, any good quality wheelgun is quite sylish.

As far as autloaders are concerned, my all-time favourites are Bren Ten, Colt Gold Cups and Walther PPK, but that's a rather personal point of view. When I'm out of ideas when I just "want" to buy a gun, I usually rent a couple of spy movies and keep my eyes open... :D

Here's my idea of stylish, though it's not unique:

If you want something more unique, since Glocks don't float your boat, how's this:

In no particular order...

--Any Gemini Customs revolver, though my personal choice would be a slicked up Ruger SP-101 or S&W J-Frame, stainless or alloy, with white Corian grips and without porting.

--An Uberti replica of the S&W Top Break, because that's what Jesse James and Bill Hickock carried.

--A bright, polished, blued Browning Hi-Power with walnut grips, because sometimes you just have to go old school.

S&W model 27 3 1/2" barrel. .357 Magnum.

Good for marryin's and buryin's and most anything in between.

I've kind of got my heart set on a 627 Hunter from the PC. Problem is I'm having problems finding any for sale. I would even consider the 686 Hunter as well. Not the Classic Hunter version though.

I don't own one, but I imagine you'd find the Springfield EMP 9mm to be a useful and stylish little gun. Right at your price point too.

I like the EMPs too, but man those little buggars are expensive. And I've yet to find one under $1000. For the same price, a full size target 1911 that would outshoot the little EMP. And I just can't justify $1000 on a carry pistol when my little SR9c does the same job for under half the price. Don't get me wrong, the EMPs are sweet looking little guns. I would just have trouble spending the money on one.

I just picked up a FN 45 Tactical and it's a pretty unique pistol. Your end price will be over 1k though. If you end up putting a can and Trijicon on it.

You were asking about grip size and the grip on the Tactical is pretty large but it's not too bad.

A S&W in .41 Mag is definitely something special but the older, the better!

Olympic (!) style .22lr "free pistol." Google it and see. Trigger pull is measured in ounces. Accurate as anything on the planet. :)

They are just single shot. I eyeballed a Hämmerli 120 but prefer a few more roundds. Here is an alternative: even though it is a .22 short, it is a joy to shoot - and unlike its .22 l.r. siblings can be found under $ 1,000.

Since someone brought up .22s....

How about a Wolverine or a Star Model F?

It's hard to miss with either of them and people are always asking questions at the range. There were 500 or so Wolverines that were nickel-plated, BTW.

I've got ivory mother-of-pearl repro grips on order for this one:

What kind of style? How about going with a classic?

Find a deal on something that is cool to start with then put a little extra into making it your own, just find a good gunsmith that will work with you. I can recommend a couple -

My Georgia Detonics CombatMaster <$1050 total invested

After

My S&W 586 L-Comp <$800 total invested

Custom 9mm S&W 360J around $1100 total invested

Or do a little hunting and you can find some relatively rare and cool stuff that the guy in the next booth at the range won't have. I got each of these for well under $1000 -

Unfired AMT AutoMag V .50AE
SDC11315.jpg

Unfired original Coonan Model B .357mag
SDC11345.jpg

Unfired AMT Hardballer Longslide (Arcadia factory)
SDC11250.jpg

Universal Enforcer .30 Carbine pistol
SDC10942.jpg

Vintage chopped S&W 1917/1937 Brazilian .45acp
SDC11238.jpg

Austin Behlert custom S&W 25-2 .45acp
SDC11523.jpg

So, IMO, go for unique if you don't want some run of the mill gun that everybody and their cousin has. Either customize something and make it your own or do a little looking around and you can find all kinds of neat iron looking for a new home!

I had to go through Gunbroker to get my S&W 627 Pro. My LGS said if they had to order it from their distributor that it would be on indefinite back-order.

It is an N-frame, but with the 4" barrel it doesn't feel too large in my average sized hands... It felt smaller than the 627 PC and not much larger than the 686 SSR.

8 shots, moon clips, super nice trigger and it handles magnums well. Not to mention, it definitely gets some attention at the range.
