So I stumbled upon a discussion on the internet of brands some shops refuse to sell and further more refuse to transfer to a customer.

Other than because they can would a shop turn away money due to the brand if the gun.

My personal ffl gets $20 on every gun transferred and does not care what it is.

Not every distributor can get every type of gun so that can leave an FFL high and dry. So I am not sure if that counts as a refusal in your book?

My FFL doesnt charge for my transfers. Yet cannot get some stuff I am after.. He has no issues when I order and send it to him though..

Why and how would that work? I have had a variety of guns shipped to a couple different FFLs. They don’t know what is coming until it shows up. If I have $1,000 gun or $150 Hi Point sent what can they do differently between the 2? Do they just send the gun back if they don’t like the brand?

I can understand not wanting to order a brand if a high % get returned or get stuck with a $150 gun doesn’t have perfect fit and finish that the customer was expecting. If a gun just shows up, transferring to the customer who bought it is the easiest answer.

Yeah we have a place here too. He charges 50.00 for internet. And 25.00 for person to person. They also low ball real bad on trade ins. But their reloading supplies can't be beat. He undersells online retailers. I was there yesterday and bought some 17HMR ammo. They got primers in. 60.00 a 1000.

I’ve got a local shop with ammo and component prices as cheap as the internet. Most stuff on the wall when you factor in shipping, transfer, and taxes is about the same. You want to do an internet transfer it’ll be $60. But he’ll help you out if you need to ship a gun to another ffl.

I came across an FFL that charged 10% of the gun's value to do the transfer. Unless you are buying a $300 Hi-point or Taurus, the charge there was always more than most shops. I don't think he is in business anymore. And with that policy, I can see why.

The LGS I like the most does $15 transfers no matter what it is. I saw a woman in there one day that bought a Barrett for her husband's birthday. They live in the far south end of the state and did the transfer at that shop because of good customer service. She also bought a $1000 scope, mounting, and ammo there too.

Are those brands secret? :scrutiny:

I know a number of gun dealers that choose not to stock inexpensive handguns.
-returns of such guns is higher than better quality firearms
-profit margin or actual profit is less
-history of repair/replacement of that brand
-the type of customer looking for the cheapest pistol he can get is not the cash cow dealers want.
-brands with a faster "time to crime" tend to be inexpensive. No dealer wants to face the scrutiny and additional reporting requirements when he has a lot of those.

As far as transfers......I don't care what my customers buy.

The shop I go to caters to more of the higher end stuff, you won't see hi points or Taurus but you'll find 50k worth of Atlas 2011s.

I've talked to a few that refused to order certain brands for inventory. Hi-Point was a common one. I do know a guy that wouldn't order Kimber or Colt into his shop unless the customer put 50% up front.

As for refusing to accept one for transfer, were they new guns or used? Any chance it was about where they came from and not what they were?

Retail stores here vary a lot in price and some refuse certain types of guns for transfer (i.e. Field and stream will not transfer guns they deem an assault weapon). One store charges $100 to transfer any they otherwise carry or can order into their retail store, versus $40 for others. I know of at least one club FFL who will only transfer shotguns and an occasional higher end bolt hunting rifle. There is also a very popular FFL here who will only do transfers if you show an NRA card and go through a class at their range, however they only charge $10. That's not to say there aren't plenty of other people here who will transfer whatever you like for a reasonable $15 to $25, just that most people I've met prefer to use a retail storefront and therefore accept the limitations/prices.

Tarus, sccy, hi point, etc

This is about dealers refusing to transfer these brands to individuals.

if I was a FFL, and making $50 a transfer, I would transfer ANYTHING! literally a piece of plastic, if it requires transfer

I know, they listed their reasons as being related to the quality of the brands.

Personally I think it's revenue lost, I am not an ffl so maybe there is more that meets the eye

Well, in the world of business, that called a idiot move. If the transfer fee is the same for a Raven .25 ACP vs. a Glock 17 Gen 5 with 30 watt Phase Plasma attachment. Who
Care? lol

I was going to write something about respecting business owners wishes to run their businesses however they wanted, but I can’t get behind it. Not this.

refusing transfers due to brand is absolutely stupid. It is insulting to people who are asking because they dont know any better. Some of those people are buying a gun for the first time. What a way to welcome them to the world of gun ownership. Middle finger salute to that.

In the real early 2000’s I worked at the LGS. We wouldn’t sell or take trade-ins of Taurus because the failure rate was extremely high and factory service was awful

We would transfer anything

That's what I mean, this shop has nothing to lose doing a transfer.

I like my tarus 357 and 1911 45 acp.

I bought both because of cheap price, I feel a form of elitism is factored into this decision

It's a right of choice to both parties. If the shop owner refuses to transfer, his store, his rules.

The buyer also has a choice as where to spend their money, for that purchase, and more importantly, future in store purchases.

Field & Stream is owned by the appropriately named Dick's. No surprise there.

Fortunately, the one Field & Stream locally closed shop and the location was taken over by another outdoor store.

My dealer charges $40. I think mostly to discourage. I have known him over 30 years. He would charge me less, but I don't accept the discount. He has to do all the paperwork, take the risk of a clerical error, receive the package, and everything else that goes along with it. I'll take the special discounts on other things that he gives me because of many years of doing business together.

There may be a history of the ffl having people come back upset that their xxx brand gun isn’t working, broke something, etc. and the guy doesn’t want to deal with that again.

It also may be that the guy has a bias against lower cost guns and/or the customer who buys one. (This would stink.)

A policy like that certainly can exclude many people from purchasing a gun for financial reasons. Not everyone can drop $1K or more on an average-cost gun purchase (gun, tax, fees, etc.) but $425 total for a SCCY or Hi Point is doable.

As was said above: it’s his game and his rules. I don’t like them either, but thats how he wants it.:(

Stay safe.
