There is a pretty long list of guns that cannot be handled by dealers in Illinois. A melting point frame minimum requirement. Maybe it is something like that.

If the initial interview takes more than an hour the IOI and you are arguing 9mm vs .45
I've had two FFL interviews and neither took more than an hour.

Really? That's good to know. I was seeing other people on a Facebook gunsmith group saying the IOI inspection/interview was going on for 3 and 4. One is easier to deal with.

Do it now.
It doesn't need to be your full time job or even a very busy part time job like me.
Politics are never going to change. There will always be anti gunners and always be liberals pushing their agenda.[/

I could do 3-4 hours, I’m a natural sales man and can talk to a brick wall.

Two different things.
The interview ATF conducts immediately prior to issuing the license, is not as much an interview, but an orientation and information session where the IOI reviews the various ATF forms and the applicable regulations the licensee is expected to follow. They have a checklist that they will tick off, they sign, you sign, you get a copy.

If you ask a question they will answer. If you ask a lot of questions because you haven't read or familiarized yourself with any ATF regs before the interview, I can see it taking hours. This will show the IOI that you're a numbskull. Don't be that guy. Read EVERYTHING at atf.gov before you ever mail in your FFL app. Read every form, the instructions to that form, every regulation, ruling, open letter and FAQ. Read the citations to each of those FAQ's.

The only questions the IOI may ask you is if you have business cards, do you plan to dio gunsmithing, do transfers, sell at gun shows, etc. "Small talk" where he's sizing you up to see if you intend to be a bonafide gun dealer. If he hasn't already asked to see your business permit, sales tax certificate he may ask but they can still issue the FFL and you can send those later. He will already know if your zoning or HOA allows a home based business.

A compliance inspection on the other hand is where the IOI comes by to hunt for errors, omission, mistakes, etc in your recordkeeping. They will compare your inventory, 4473's multiple sale forms vs your inventory.

Always keep in mind that while the ATF IOI is almost always friendly, professional and helpful........they are not your friend.
Their purpose is to discover errors, omission, mistakes, etc in your recordkeeping. Many are gun owning Second Amendment loving conservatives. That doesn't matter one bit if you have missing inventory, unsigned 4473's or you forgot to send in multiple sale reports for the last two months.

It is not a hobby.

When NM went to background checks on any sale Wal-Mart use it as an excuse to quit selling firearms because they said their sales help couldn't deal with it and their no outside firearms coming in policy made it untenable.

This is an e mail I literally just opened, thought of this thread right away.

It is from a small LGS in the area I live in that shows what some (many!) dealers charge Ca residents for gun and ammo purchases.

Buying stuff here ain’t cheap sometimes. When I became one of my ffl’s first, and arguably one of their best, transfer customers, my out of pocket to them is a fraction of what almost every other gun store charges for transfers or purchases.

Stay safe.

So not a lot of people transferring in a $150 Hipoint and paying $125 transfer fee I bet.

I picked up 3 transfers today. The price usually varies depending on who processes the transfers. Today it was $20. Some days if it takes a while they don't charge me. Some days 3 transfers is $30. I think the most I had at one time was 6 or 7 and they charged me $50. I believe their stated charge is $20 for the first, $10 for the 2nd. Its kinda nebulous after that.

I have bought a lot of FFL items and parts from them over the years, too, so maybe they factor that in.
