Ruger GP-100 .22lr 5.5”

I know Smiths have their own problems, and I do like the GP100 platform, but I am really hesitant to ever buy a Ruger 22 lr revolver after my own experience, and reading this thread. It just seems the 22s don't get adequate attention. I think if I want a 22lr handgun, I'll go with a S&W 617 of some flavor.

My GP100 .22lr after doing the work will be a good shooter, but I shouldn't have had to do all what I did. If someone was in the market for a .22lr revolver, and what I know today I would tell them to go with the S&W 617, I don't like the lock and the full lug (unnecessary weight on an already heavy .22lr) but I feel it is the better value even at $80 more. My liking of my GP100 .357 put a bias in my mind towards the GP100 .22lr and I should have taken a closer look comparing the S&W and the Ruger.

This just means I left room for a S&W 617 down the road, if I would have bought it first and been satisfied I would have only ended up with one. :)

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the locks either, and I'm seriously considering buying plugs for my smiths and doing away with the locks all together. that being said, I've never had any problems with the locks, even on heavy recoiling guns. But preference is really important on that issue.

Regarding the lug on the 617, I agree. A few years ago I bought my career mentor a 617 as a retirement gift. After handling a 6" barrel version, and casually handing it to my friend at one point when we were in a gun shop together, we both felt it was way too nose heavy. However we both thought the 4" version was nicely balanced.

I have debated buying a 617 and having the lug removed. Seems an older model 17 is a cheaper option if I want a Smith. It would be purely a range gun for me, so holster wear and bluing damage wouldn't be a problem.

Think I will not acquire the GP .22LR and just hold on to my Model 18. Have the double action down in the 8's.
