Something else to consider, if the guy is unarmed and he does break your side glass, just retreat to the other side of the car.

Jayman, this tactic is kind of questionable considering how quickly a weapon (firearm or other) can be put into play and used offensively. By the time you realize you're under attack, and try to move to the other side, you're dead and he owns you IF that's his intention.

Of course, you're probably better off driving off if that's possible, but if you're stuck in traffic with a maniac breaking in, that's as close to a lethal threat as you can get IMO.

In NC where I live you are authorized to use lethal force if someone's breaking into your occupied car.

I would not have engaged the guy verbally but kept a watchful eye on him and the car he was in just in case him or the vehicle came closer to my vehicle. Also make sure no other cars behind or in front of me had any of the his buddies.

Given no access to firearm as you stated I would do the following.

911 & camera ready
chemical spray ready
maglite ready
look for nearest escape route

Have 911 on speed dial. Take pictures of other person and vehicle and those around us (done this before and some people cool off when they know you have their picture others do not).

After snapping a few quick shots, have OC ready in hand peer down to ensure maglite ready and scout for best escape route.

That's funny and probably the most effective response I've read yet. That'll surely send him packing.

I've had two occasions where the jerk followed me. First time I went to an ice house and called the cops. Idiot came inside and made some threats, but left when he was told the police were on their way. I got his car's license number and waited. Showed the cop my DL and CHL (required to show CHL in Texas if you're heeled). Store manager told officer the guy shopped there at times and could be a real ass when he was drinking. Cop ran the plate and asked if I wanted him to go talk to the guy. Said yes because I figured the cop who tell the idiot he had messed with an old man with a gun.

After the second incident, I bought a cell phone.

I try real hard to try to put myself in somebody else's shoes before getting mad at them.

Perhaps the person who cut me off is the poor waitress who just worked a double to try to get enough extra money to buy her her kids some much needed school supplies.

Maybe the guy in a hurry and passing cars is trying real hard to get to an interview because he lost his job some months back.....

Or maybe...it's a kid who didn't pay enough attention....knows he almost just had an accident and is scared to death somebody is going to scream at him.

Now....if the shoes on the other foot...and somebody is yelling at me.....what the heck.....perhaps I did do something they weren't expecting and 10 minutes from now......if I apologize......all will be forgotten. A smile.....an apology....all cost nothing.

If that don't work.....a cell phone and some bear spray work great for when you can't be carrying heat.

Always do this...

Whenever you're stopped in traffic, even when there's no visible threat or any reason to think that there might be one, ALWAYS stop with at leave a half car length in front of you. You should be able to see a lot of roadway between your hood and the back of the car in front of you.

This way, if there is a threat, you have enough room to at least TRY to maneuver out of the way, and if you can't get through the cars that may be beside you, you can at least introduce motion to disrupt the attack.

In addition, if some clown tail-ends your car, you may not end up with your car getting pushed into the back of the vehicle in front of you. That can save a lot of expenses, and it could mean the difference between being able to drive on or being stuck there with a broken radiator!
