Just a thought but .44 magnum has been used to take everything on the planet on every continent. Polar bears, elephants, cape buffalo. I don't know what more you would need. My Marlin 1894 would be great for just about every situation with a bear. With practice you can also get some really fast follow up shots.

If you want something a bit different, the Winchester 1895 in 405 WCF is a nice package. Easily reloadable and easily capable of taking anything on this continent.

If we are considering shotguns, I would have to go with an Ithaca Road Blocker. 10ga auto with 20in bbl and 3.5in chamber. That's a .775 caliber slug. Russ Broom in either Zim or Bots, can't remember which, uses one with 000 to follow up wounded leopards, fast bad actors.

If hunting elephant you can bet there is a PH right behind the pistolero with a heavy double that will probably be used. In Moz and Zim you can use a handgun on buff, maybe even ele in zim, but it is not a c.ommon practice. Dead clients are not good for the PH's business.

I agree 100%. When in elephant country, the old saying is "use a caliber that starts with a "5" to stay alive. May be somehing of an over statement. A PH will be backing up a client using a pistol on buff or ele. Never had a pistolero on one of our hunts. As a matter of fact, I have never even seen a pistol in Africa once I was out of Joberg.

A good 12 gauge riot gun with Brenneke slugs. Tons of energy. Cheaper than most rifles. Pump or Semi, makes little difference. I just picked up a Mossberg 500 with a five shot magazine and a rifled barrel for 220 bucks and am sure it goes in the camper with us next spring.
