Alright everyone This will be your chance to pile on the OP. I only do this because I'm very secure in my man hood to allow my self to be made fun of for presenting a STUPID IDEA, but I notice there are a lot of folks out there that enjoy a good old pile on insteat of constructive replys. Well here goes....3.2.1..............Texas Open Carry .....
I have what I'm sure will turn out to be a stupid Idea, because sometimes when I think about it I'm thinking ...are you nuts.
Let's say Texas passes an open carry law, and we start open carrying everywhere. I throught one way to calm down citizients is when you open carry (now stay with me here) you have a badge showing. Hold your comments because I know at this point there are not good comments for my idea. There are web sites where you can have badges made to say just about anything, as long as you don't try to pass yourself off as a Law Enforcment Officer. I just had a badge made which looks official in every way (even with the Texas seal) until you read what's on it. My badge says on the Top "Viet Nam Vet" then down below it says DCMA (Defense Contract Managment Agency ...who I work for) but nobody will know what DCMA means. Point being when someone sees an open carry weapon with a badge next to it, I assure you they will think Police and will welcome your presense. Sure I'm prepaired for the obvious question...what if a police Officer see's you with your little fake badge. No doubt you will have some explaining to do, but if you explain why you have this little fake badge, and maybe, depending on the Officer you will receive a laugh OR a ride in a Police car. Sure could use some expert legal replys on this one before I become the poster boy for bad ideas.
OK now you can tell me Are You Nuts!!!!!!!

will it look kinda like this badge?

yeah...count me out on that...

Unless there was some provision in the law that informed the LEOs of the badge option, I can see bad things happening with cops getting the wrong idea about what you're trying to do. The idea is sound, but cops have a brotherhood, and if they think you're trying to pass yourself off as one, things could get ugly.

Harley Man,your's is a well intentioned idea but it should hardly be necessary,(Sorry!),
States like Arizona,Idaho,Vermont,New Mexico,Montana and many others have OC'ed for years,if not decades without the need of any badge ID.
Texans are sharp, quick and bright.Once OC becomes law, which it will, you all will adapt pronto, to this new reality.:)

Gun shows have vendors selling that badge. Many are also getting the black leather flip wallet. Me, I'll pass.

I've always assumed if i were professionally dressed and carrying openly on a nice leather belt and holster, and carrying a Glock or similar, people would automatically assume I'm a cop.

Carrying dual sixshooters and a bandolier of ammo... notsomuch.

I plan to OC on occasion when it becomes law just to promote the idea.

as long as you don't try to pass yourself off as a Law Enforcment Officer.

In the eyes of many LEO's, that would be getting dangerously close to "Impersonation of a Peace Officer", regardless of intentions.

Point being when someone sees an open carry weapon with a badge next to it, I assure you they will think Police and will welcome your presense.

But then you're in a precarious position, if you happen to be around while a crime is occurring. If people "assume" you're a cop, they'll expect you to get involved.

I WOULD HAVE GIVEN $10 NOT TO HAVE LISTED THIS POST....... All of you guys are dead on with your replys. Guess this is why we have this site to exchange ides ...no matter how bad they are!!!!!!!

another problem with that is that plainclothes cops in TX are required to display a badge if they are also displaying their gun (or at least that's what my CHL instructor said). so if a cop is carrying openly, he must also have a badge, often displayed on the holster if he is not in standard uniform.

thus, an informed citizen should only assume you're a cop if you also have a badge visible.

someone can fact check me on this. i know CHL instructors don't necessarily know everything, and this was not part of the standard curriculum...just came up in discussion. he could have been incorrect.

I don't see the point. If you aren't doing anything illegal then why try to fool people about what you are doing?

Well, Michiganders must be dull, slow and dim-witted. Because even though this is an OC state, you don't dare do it without consequences. And doing it in Mackinac or Luce county, et al, doesn't count.

If they pass OC I plan to get a nice belt and a nice basket weave holster to carry a 1911. Maybe I'll even splurge on a SS slide for same.

So on this whole Texas open carry thing I've been hearing a lot about (and wishing) it has been talked about for years but nothing ever materialized for a bill.

Just a bunch of people like myself saying they would support it if the legislation made it up for a vote.

Did I miss something on this? What's all the fuss now? I'm glad its being talked about more but I don't want to get my hopes up here I might end up crying.

So if there is or will be a legislation when is the soonest that it could happen?

Badge? Um well I think they are pretty! Legality aside, and all other things sure why not! Throw on a pair of cuffs too! I would like our CHL to become a CWP then I could pack a slap, asp, club, sword and many other cool things!

I doubt legally you can be charged with anything, because you are not impersonating a Law Enforcement Officer, there are tons of bounty hunters that have badges that say bounty hunters, and Private investigators that have private investigator badges. IF however you get a "fake" police badge, then enjoy your free ride in the back of a police car. As long as you dont say you are a police officer I think you would be "ok".....but it is still in my opinion a very bad idea

Besides the obvious problem of potentially impersonating a peace officer, I'm not going to purchase and use something that will attempt to reinforce the idea that only officers should carry, and that the general public shouldn't.

Big Boomer,I found this article from 3 weeks ago talking about Texas OC.

More on Open Carry
Legislation to allow open carry will be introduced during the next legislative session here in Texas. I honestly do not think it will get much traction this time around as the main push will be on campus carry and on legislation that would allow folks to have their legally owned firearm locked up in their private automobile while at work.

That being said, I hope that I am wrong and that open carry legislation gets a serious look this time around. The Cowtown Cop offers his opinion from a cop's perspective with "Open carry in the State of Texas".

Oddly enough, out here in Cali, when I was arrested for OC, I was frequently mistaken for a cop. Wearing Khaki Shorts, Tucked in Polo Shirt, and a Blue Hat with a yellow M on it (Michigan Wolverines.) I was mistaken for Police, and Military Police, right up until I was arrested. Even that cop asked if I was Military Police, and informed me that MP's can't carry off post out of uniform. (I'm not an MP btw.)

Not sure when it may happen but several pro-carry groups are testing the waters post-heller. The folks over at OpenCarrydotOrg [ http://www.opencarry.org ] have gotten enough donations to put up a pro open carry billboard for 2 months along a Texas Interstate highway. There are petition drives and lots of grass roots work being done. Take a look at open carry dot com. You may be suprised at the amount of effort being put into this.
