HQMHQM, I'd have to say the recoil is going to be different on a 30-30 than the .44mag as in the felt recoil of 30-30 is not as uh...sharp. It is more of a push and isn't bad at all. In fact my daughter 14 YO enjoyed shooting my 1894 Winnie I HAD in 30-30 more than shootong my .243 Savage bolt gun. and the recoil in a .243 is light to say the least.

I'd love to meet and shake the hand of the man who kept this 336RC in perfect condition since 1968....I have to admire someone with such a respect for firearms....I have it, as do most here. But it is all to rare to see something in this condition that is that old anymore. Heres to you who ever you are!!!

Nemato, I agree! Now to keep frequenting there so I can catch the next 39A that shows up.
Just picked up a beautiful little 336M today and will have some photos and a range report up tomorrow.
I've been vacillating between a 336 and one of the Saigas for weeks now. When I walked into the gun store today, the clerk just smiled knowingly and walked into the back. He returned, placing my newest trophy on the counter, and removed any question as to which rifle would come first.
Just out of curiosity, does anybody know what a 336M sells for? I'm absolutely happy with the deal I got, but wouldn't mind a lil' conformation either.
EDIT: Sorry, I should have mentioned that it's a 30-30. I believe that the 336M were only made in 2000 and became the 336SS from 2001 on.

That's next on my long-gun list.
(Lever gun, of course.
Slightly more stout
than .30-30.) Got a revolver or two to add before then,
but before I get to AK (see attached image),
or shortly thereafter, I intend to have a .45-70 in the toolkit.
Same action as 336, right?
Is it beefed up, or the same action?

Found myself curious about 416 Rem.

What ever the .30-30 doesn't stop,
the 12 ga would take care of.
Beyond that, .45-70 is enough.
(And won't knock me back 1.5'.)
If "it" won't stop with
two or three of rnds of .45-70,
it's not from this planet,
and deserves to eat me for lunch.

I had the chance to buy a 336 or whatever model it is in a "guide gun" in 444 marlin. I should have done it as it was a consignment from a guy just back from Alaska and it had been sent away and EVEVRTHING done, trigger, porting, reblued, super super nice. It also came with 4 boxes of 444 marlin which aint cheap! All for $450.00...shouda woulda coulda!!! DANG!

I gave $440 for my 336M yesterday and feel it was a fair price. $450 for that guide gun was flat out immoral.
Looks like we are about on the same wavelength Nematocyst-870. My next gun looks to be a 45-70. I don't know why. I don't NEED one, but the big fella just casts a spell over me.
My local gun store only had the 45-70 in the XLR version and .450 for guide guns. Oh well, they'll just have to order me one if I get drawn for elk this year.

I've never shot one, and - as a smaller person - don't look forward to shooting full house rounds in one (from what I've heard).

I understand. I don't need one either, at least now. Even if I go to Alaska, I could probably get by with my 12 ga and slugs for protection from large brown predators with sharp claws and teeth.

You guys are wrong - you DO need a .45-70. It's a historical thing...an American thing. I am not kidding.
The factory 405 grain loads are not bad unless you shoot them off a bench. Try prone for comfort and accuracy.
The 1895s tend to be quite accurate, more accurate in my experience than the 336s (YMMV).

Im very happy with it
If your looking for a very reliable backpacking gun (Like I was) its perfect
Also I havnt had a single jam using name brand mags
Yeah Im very happy with the trade I probably had 400 bucks in that car
The 416 does kick alot.
The other thing is Ammo is very expensive (until I started reloading it)

Jnew, I'm very happy there are honest well thinking men like you around to justify the guns I "need"....or to simply give me the support I need to justify it myself! Thanks and when I make a mistep and say I don't need another gun but found X for $......streighten me out!

kinda a thread bump, but...went looking for a 39A again today, nothing yet. ALso have yet to find a full rifle leingth 336 yet as well, which I may be in the market for as mines a carbine...which I LOVE! gotta go shoot it Saturday for the first time since new to me.......

I have an 1894C .357 while attempting to put a Williams Dovetail Firesight set on it the front blade does not "dovetail" into the ramp. No matter how I attempt to line it up. Am I missing something? is there a trick to it? any suggestions are appreciated.

well by a roundabout way I will be coming into a Marlin 336W in a few weeks; cliff notes version...bought a Winchester 70 Coyote in .243 by trading a Remington 7600 in .30-06 (turned out not to be my taste) and a Beretta 92 (redundant to my revolvers); got a call from family that lent me $$$ for taxes few years ago and has let me 'trickle' funding to them...they need a whopper of a payback to cover taxes this year (retired, fixed income, had to pay medical bills, short on $$$ for taxes); sold the Winchester Coyote and will cut them a check tomorrow;
the flip side...a shop around here allows me to take extra ammo, accessories, and supplies and trade them in and get instore credit...been building the credit for awhile now; took some extra ammo and other stuff from the guns I traded and sold recently; had enough to order a Marlin 336W and have $$$ leftover for ammo, scope mounting, etc; ordered the Marlin today...they will input it with their weekly order next week and it should be in my hands @ 1 week after that;
kept a 'leftover' Sightron SI 3 - 9 X 40 scope that I will mount with Weaver heavy duty see-through mounts (so I can use the iron sights) & I will upgrade the rifle sights later on

While at the range yesterday, I saw a man shooting his Winchester Trapper in 30-30. That's the model with the 16.5" barrel. He was putting everything into about a half dollar size circle at 50 ft. I commented that I liked his rifle and he said that it wasn't a target rifle, but was OK as a plinker. I really liked the short barrel, but all the time I was watching him, I was thinking about my 336C at home. I wished I had it with me for a little competition. It will shoot nickel size groups at 25 yards, and about half dollar size at 100 yds. I just relayed this to my son and he said that made me sound rather cocky, but I didn't say I could shoot that well, I said the rifle was capable of shooting that well. I have done it though. I love my 336! Let's don't let this thread die.
