Finally got caught up with my reading here...

This is such a cool thread.

Does anyone have (or can they post) some good pictures of your 336 featuring Skinner Sights? I would like a good look (maybe different angles) of these sights.

fiVe, I'm looking forward to some images of Skinners, too.
Glad you're finding some value over here in this club house.
________

OK, I've been hanging out on Marlin Owners Forum a bit lately, reading up on the 1894C I'm going to buy.

Tonight, I found a thread on how to unload Marlin levers through the loading gate (rather than levering them out).

I really like the idea, but so far, and having trouble making it work for me consistently.

Here's a film on the basic technique. The person who produced the film is ostensibly Finn, one of the members of the MOF thread.

I seem to be able to get the first round out fine. But after that, no matter how I push the gate, the others seem to hang up, and 1/2 get stuck behind the gate (requiring me to lever it in).

When I try it on my 336, it seems that the rnds coming out of the mag are not coming out straight. Even if I push the gate in until it won't go any further, the rnds won't slide past it, but stick on the gate.

Must be something subtle.

I'd like to learn this. Any tips?

Do any of you use this technique for unloading?

Time to join the club...

1972 336 of some sort. I don't know the letter.

Removed the scope and ordered a fire site setup.

there is some surface rust on the receiver, barrel is bright and crisp. Wood has some minor dings. The screws for the scope mounts are too long to re-insert so I ordered a new set of those as well.

I'll post another photo after the work and give a range report....

Welcome to 336-ville, drmsparks. (Can we call you Sparks?)

I'm guessing you recently acquired the rifle. Very nice. Beautiful wood.
I'll bet it's all going to clean up really nicely.

Have you shot it yet?

Please keep us updated with reports and pics.

Nem

I found it at the local shop last weekend for 225. I was looking for a camp gun and this fit's the bill. I was on my way home from the range at the time and almost drove back to see what it would do. Oh, well, that's what this weekend is for!

I haven't had any luck getting it apart though. The screws are in there tight. I ordered a set of marlin bits from Brownells and a couple of replacement screws (just in case I round the heads) when I ordered the new sights.

Hey Five,
If you look at post 428 this is a side view of my 336 with the skinner sights on it. Both front and rear sights are on the rifle. I love the sights. They are easy to mount and very sturdy. I will take some better pics hopefully this weekend and post them.

i need help deciding

i found a 336 in .30-30 in a pawn shop today for $300 bottom price

the metal is about 95%

the stock has some dents from and a nick i can probbly fix the dents but maybe not the nick

its in pretty good shap all together should i hop on it ?

its 300 so not that much

Dude,

Do you know which version of 336 it is?

That is, A, C, W, AS, CS, SC, etc?
(That should be stamped on the gun.)

Reason I ask is, if it's a C or some others,
in that shape, it may well be worth it.

If its a W, you can get a new one for that price.

Others in here are more capable than me of offering advice on used guns.
I usually buy new just because I don't have a comfort level with evaluating used guns that others do.

Nem

from the look of the stock i want to say that it is a c

i checked new and even if it is the walmart one i would still save some cash

If you are willing to wait you eventually stumble onto one for less.

After getting one you'll wonder why you waited so long to save $50...

I've purchased Marlins at both ends of the price spectrum, including a few I felt like I stole and a few others I paid a ransom for. I have no regrets with my purchases. I do have some regrets on the ones I didn't buy though...

My name is Mo and I have a lever addiction... :D:p

im going to look at a few more pawn shops today and c if i cant find one in either a little better shape or one for cheaper

Add me to the 336 club. I got a 336 in .35 Remington back in the spring. I don't know the year but its a pre-safety in 90-95% condition. It was a great buy I gave $255 for the rifle. I have not fired it yet but hope to have it ready for the upcoming deer season.

Welcome to 336-ville, M'bogo. Keep us posted about results when you fire it.

My name is Mo and I have a lever addiction... :D :p
<Many voices, droning in unison, from all parts of the clubhouse ...>

"Hi, Mo."

What do we call ourselves? LA? (Leverholics anonymous?) :D

Hey Nem and Mo,
I like the nick name LE. A hole lot better than LA. Besides this is one addicition that does not need any cure except a trip to the range or woods.

This is my older Glenfield model 30GT made buy Marlin. It was purchased new at Western Auto in Lusk, Wyoming for $129. in 1979. Since then this carbine has put a lot of meat on our table. 30-30 is a keeper!

Well, I started with the 642 Club, then the SIG club, so I'm now here. Here is my 336SS-LTD .35 Rem with XS sights. Hope this photo works right - I'm sorta new to attaching photos.

T.R. and flc, welcome.

Two more beautiful rifles in the clubhouse.

flc, never heard of an LTD before. Cool name.

T.R., $129 for that beauty. You scored.
Tells us something about prices now v then.

I participated in a handgun safety class at the range today.

An entire weekend compressed in to one 10-hour day. ( :what: )

I took my 336 with the hope that after the class,
I'd get a chance to shoot a few rnds with the XS GRs,
in my process of sighting them.

You see, when I called XS recently to discuss the fact that
the last time I did range shooting, my groups were far above POA,
the rep asked how far (above POA at what range: 50 v 100).

He said, if it's a long ways, with rear sight 3 full turns
from the bottom, then they need to send me a taller front post.

As best as I recall, it was 8" to 10" at 50.
But I wanted to be sure.

So I took it to the range today to check it,
thinking there'd be time after class.

But alas, by the time the class was over,
the rifle range was closed.

:(

Que sera.

So, that leads to "this" question (6 lines down).

I like the idea of GR,
even though I see a scout scope on this baby eventually,
I'd like GRs as backup.

But this experience, having a front post too small,
is making me wonder if there's some other GR that could be better.

Do the Skinners fit first time every time?
Plug and play?

Or do they require tweaking like the XS?

My Skinners on my 1895 GS did require the taller front sight. I would expect that would be the same with the 336.

On my 336 the Williams sight also required the taller front post...

You see the trend ...

The Skinner front post (I believe is only $5 extra with the rear sight order) can be filed if it is too tall. On my 1895 no filing was required. I'm not 100% sure I like the thick straight post as nearly all of my opensighted rifles have a beaded front and obviously I'm more accustom too them.

If you are going to scope it and since you already have the XS sights I would stay that course. It does sound like a simple front post height issue.

If you aren't going to scope it right away put the stock irons back on both the 336 & 39A and learn how to use them (provided your vision is reasonably good). It just takes repetitions to gain a consistent sight picture and trigger squeeze. The 39 is a great way to get inexpensive reps.

Nem, the reason sights like yours take some work to get right is Marlins fault. You seem when Marlin screws the barrels into the receivers, they have a certain amount of room to keep them within spec. Even a fraction of an inch one way or the other can cause receiver mounted rear sights to print far differently than barrel mounted rear sights. That's why you have to play with the height of the front sight so much. I had to go through three before I got one to work with mine. I use the XS sights also and LOVE them. I also have them on my Marlin 39A.

But really, there's no fault, it's just the way you have to work it to make a sight work on the receiver instead of on the barrel.

Sulaco, welcome to 336-ville, dude! What took you so long to get here? ;)

To you and Mo, good advice. Makes good sense. I'll stay the course with the XS GRs for now.

I do plan on scoping the 336 as soon as I can afford a scout scope (that Leupold for me, please), as I have the 39A. So, I need to stay with the receiver mounted rear GRs.

OK, busy week coming up for me. Scary busy. :what: I may be scarce in these parts this week.
I'll duck in when I can. You folks have fun.

Nem

Which scout mount are you looking at? Is it quick-release to facilitate keeping the rear receiver sight mounted? Does it co-sight?

I thought about scoping the 39A but it seems blasphemous to put a telescopic sight on that gun.

I did have a scope on my 336 for a while and it worked great. If I had the money, I'd keep one around for deer season.

Almost certainly an XS scout scope mount.

This is going to be an experiment. I've never used a scout scope. I may not like it.
If not, I won't put on a regular scope. Would probably just use GRs.

No, I won't co-sight. I don't want that anyway. Makes them sit too high for my taste.

I mainly want to be able to have the GR's as scope back ups.

I hear you re the 39A. I respect and understand that view.

But I grew up with scoped .22's, so it's just natural for me, and for squirrels,
I prefer head shots to save meat. I just can't do that consistently with irons.
