Centerfire Levergun Postal Match

Mo, what a great idea!

E'trode, "we've" had a couple so far, mostly sponsored/organized by folks in the 39 Club (including Mo who did most of the work around the last one - see link below). Due to my workload and a broken truck that have prevented me from getting to the range in over six months, I've yet to actually participate in one (other than boasting about my superior shooting skills).

But they're a blast to watch on line, and it really contributes a lot to the spirit of our forum in a competitive but friendly fun event.

Here's the latest match that is ending this weekend (without participation by me again ... drat! The sun is shining out side for the first time in days, but a psycho client issue ate all my time this week. :banghead:
 
Tell you guys what. I would love to join the club by entering a postal match.
 
Paintballdude; I've had my best luck with 170gr jacketed bullets and IMR 3031 powder. Varget worked well too.

Recently I've had success with 150 grain Remington bullets using IMR 3031 near the published starting load. Gets me about 2100 fps in my 20" barreled 30-30's

For fun 170 grain cast bullets (used to be pretty cheap) over a few grains of pistol powder like Red Dot (See www.gmdr.com for loads). These are very accurate with the added bonus of rimfire like recoil and report. I'm not sure what they'd cost at todays prices but these loads cost me less than $0.10 per shot.
 
I would have to go with JustSayMo's recommendations. I to have had good luck with 170 grain Hornady FN at 28.8 grains of IMR3031.
150 grain Rem Core-Lokt's have given decent results with published starting loads of IMR3031.
Winchester 760 has produced good groups as well.

My next loads are going to break off and get some Accurate powder. I am thinking 2460.

Good luck. Reload safely and within the means of you cartridge/gun. Let us know how it goes.

Also I am using a little Unique under cast and the 150 core-lokts for a plinker.
 
Levergun Postal Match

Here's the basic idea for the 336 Club postal match. Please help me refine it.


-Open to ALL Centerfire Leveraction Repeating Rifles, any caliber, any make... If you have multiple leverguns, you may submit an entry for each.

-Any Sight System is OK, though there will be separate scoring divisions; Magnified (ie. Scopes) and Non-Magnified (Opens, Peeps, some red Dots. )

-Target: Shooters choice, so long as it can be mailed and easily scored

-Scoring: Three Shot Group size; Distance between outside of the outermost holes minus the diameter of bullet = Group size. Smallest group wins.

-Distance: 100 yards

-Position: Any, Benchrest, horseback or whatever legal and safe way you can shoot the most accurately.

-Targets due by? (how long do we need?)


Side Match: You can enter either or both.

-Open to same as above
-All Sights allowed, all scored together but will be noted in the results.
-Target: 3x5 index card or 3"x5" sized target. An aiming point may be drawn or stuck on.
-Scoring: same as above
-Distance 25 yards
-Position: John Wayne Offhand Style.

What do you think? Suggestions?

Hmm. How about some categories based on barrel length?

Somebody with a long-barrel XLR336 is going to smoke my 22" barrel 336A :uhoh:
even with my superb shooting skills. :scrutiny:

Well golly gee... another postal match!! I'd sure be interested.

Have a 336 in 30-30 and just picked up a well-used 336 RC in 35 Rem. If the 35 shoots okay, I'll shoot them both!
 
PBD, if you get a chance, try IMR-4895 and the bulk Remington 150-grain Core-Lokt. Most guns like it, mine absolutely LOVES it. I'm shooting 30.2 grains, which gives good load density, and reasonable thump. It's not a maximum, load, but it's not far under it, so work up carefully, as always. I may have to apply for a patent on that one, on the MarlinOwner's forum it's known as The Papajohn Load. :cool:

I can vouch for PapaJohn's load too. I don't have as much 4895 as he does so I don't use it as often but it's a good one in my Marlins. I believe he's hording it and causing a shortage... :p

On the postal match I think I'll refine it a bit and start a new thread.

PJ, I am gonna have to get me some 4895. I have heard good things about H- and IMR versions.
 
eb1, I've never tried the Hodgdon version, but I've always gotten good results with the IMR stuff. I first tried it in the early 80's in a 7.7mm Arisaka, because the load manual I had said it gave good accuracy in a variety of medium-sized cartridges. At one time, dozens of commercial rounds and nearly all US military ammo was loaded with it, with the likely exception of 5.56 ammo. I use it for 223, 30-30, 35 Rem, 375 Winchester, and still load it in the 7.7, as well!

Some folks seeem to think I'm hoarding it, but that's not true.......I just get really insecure when I have less than 20 pounds on hand! :neener:

Aw, dang. I have a box of the LeveRevolution, but I won't be able to hit the range for a while.
 
OK 336er's....I am going to EAT my words and humbly apologize. Early in this thread I was mockingly (just kind of kidding) making fun of the need for "lever action rifles".

Now, I am going to buy one. If any of you have a place to buy that is really good could you PM me?

I am looking for a lever action carbine in .45LC, .44 mag. or .454 Casull. Of course I want to look at Marlins!!!! (Maybe not the 336 exactly - but close enough?)

I apologize for my earlier transgression. I promise to do dishes for a week, take out the trash etc.

Anyway, yeah, do 20 "hail lever guns" and get yourself one.

Glad you've seen the light. Welcome to the club!

We're mainly about 336 here, but there are large caliber lever gun owners in here that can help you.
 
I picked up my first 336W today. I killed my first deer with a 336 that my father still has tucked away in a safe somewhere. 318 from the local super-store is a pretty decent price. It went out to the range today, and was hitting the 10 ring right out of the box. Really is a great gun, even though I have only tested it out to 50 yards as of today. Does anyone know where the best place to buy Lever-evolution rounds? Either in West Texas on on the internet. Thanks. Pics to follow, once the sun comes up.

Thought the weather was going to keep me in but I got a break so off to the range I went.

Marlin 336 w/stock factory scope
Settled in on a solid table with an MTM "predator" benchrest
150 yards (Max distance at Hite Hollow, damn I hate walking up that hill!)
Hornady LeverEvolution shells (160gr)

Took the last 5 shots standing offhand just to see if I could do it. Apparently I was having a pretty steady day though 1 of the five missed paper and I honestly have no idea where it went.

I haven't been slacking, just overwhelmed at work.
(So what else is new?)

But I've noticed that the club has dropped off the charts,
so seemed like time to bump it.

And let's not let this match slip by.

So much shooting to do, so little time ...
