Nope, Leupold has a line of compact scopes. I think it's currently this one, a 2-7x, and a 3-9x. They used to have a 4x compact, and I believe a 6x compact. There are still 4x's to be had used. It's a good little scope, too. Actually, the regular 4x and 2-7x work well on a 20" bbl or longer Marlin. Duckbill's Burris is a good scope and Burris had a few other powers that were compact, as I recall. If you can find them, an old Leupold M8 3x and Weaver K2.5x are great as well.

Did you ever get and install the dempled follower in your 336? I have not gotten mine yet--just being lazy I guess. I was just wondering how well it worked.

E'trode, no not yet. I've been slacking a bit on the 336 upgrades until I got the new GR's on it, and doing the tune up procedure.
Dimpled follower is still on my list, though. Thanks for the reminder.

just picked up my 336CS. she's a beauty. dates to 1997 with beautiful grain on the walnut and very defined checkering. already has sling swivels installed, and the only wear I can see is the brass marks you would expect on the loading gate.
first question is, Williams or Lyman receiver sight? I note that the receiver is pre-drilled and tapped for a receiver sight, but for which one? either? both?

I guess it's about time I joined the club. I've had my 336C since 1983, and I've re-discovered it as a whitetail rifle, now that it sports a Leupold scout scope, and is being fed Leverevolution ammo. It's funny how things come full circle as we get older, and we return to the classics of our youth.

I recently decided that I needed to get a lever action, so how much do you think I should pay for a new 336c, and how much for an older 336c?

Prices for the 336C around Louisiana run about 500 new. You might look at the 336A. It is about $100 cheeper and the only difference I mainly found is that the stock is not walnut. I went for a C about a year ago and I ended up with the A due to the price and availability.
I love the one I got and have never looked back.
That being said, the prices I have listed a probably a bit high for this time of year since hunting season is comming up rapidly and you shoud be able to get whichever one you want for less.

When my dad inherited his dad's Marlin 336 30-30, he didn't know what to do with it given its neglected state. I asked to have it and he was glad to give it up. Next week, I'll be giving it back to him as a birthday present. I think he'll be plesantly surprised. Here are some before and after shots. so far this is what i've done:
duracoat barrel, mag tube, lever, receiver, and screws
install williams front and rear sights
install synthetic stock and stipple it with a soldering iron
clean and refinish interior components
It's far from perfect but overall I am proud of what is basically my first project gun. What do you guys think?

This was the first time I've ever air-brushed anything and I found the little can of air that comes with the Dura-coat EZ kit to be woefully underpowered. Once i hooked it up to an air compressor, It was quite easy.
I made some mistakes but I learned from them and I can't wait to start my next project. By the way... she shoots like a dream!

For some time I have been thinking about adding a "bean field" 30-30 to go with my 336SS Ltd .35 woods gun. I envisioned something like a 336 Cowboy 30-30 or something like the current blued version of the .308 Marlin Express. I really didn't want the .308 although something like a .270 or .257 Marlin Express sounds nice. That project got waylaid today. I went to a gun show to see what they might have in Marlins and was dissappointed to find very few.
However, at one of the last vendors, I saw a well used, but good, 30TK with hardwood stock and about 90+ % blueing left. No rust and action was very nice. It was priced at $300 and I started thinking that might be a nice little 30-30 to have. Then I looked at the other side of the rack............
I found a pristine 30TK with 100% blueing and two tiny nicks on the bottom left of the action. No rust - everything looked perfect. Although I'm probably wrong it doesn't look as if it has ever been fired (and having worked as a gun salesman part time, I've seen lots.) Even the loading gate looks as if it had not been used. The action is tight. The barrel looks new. As a bonus it has a like new walnut stock with the current checkering pattern of the 336 and the rubber butt plate. It is, of course, straight stocked and the buttstock looks identical to my 336SS Ltd. The fore-end looks just like the one on a current 336 with the sling stud on the barrel band. The short magazine tube is about an inch shorter than my .35. Barrel lengths are the same at 18.5". The gun absolutely looks great. Using the dating procedure from the Marlin Collectors forum it was built in 1990.
The listed price was $325. I studied it as if I really didn't need it and after a while gave the obligitory offer that is waaay to low. When I did, my heart almost stood still as I could see in his eyes..."He's gonna take it!" He did and I'm embarrassed to say what I got it for, but it was waaay under $300! He said it had been on a rack in his shop for almost three years!
My camera is already packed and in storage for next weeks relocation (as well as my unmounted scopes) but as soon as I get set up I'll fire up a photo. I have a Leupold VXII 1-4 I may put on it. Just have to see how it looks. I really think a compact 4x might be best.
As I said, my "bean field" project got sidelined. I guess I'll just see if Marlin puts out a .270ME or .257ME next year.

I finally got around to taking pictures of my 336 tonight. My rifle is a .30-30 made in 1978, before Marlin added the crossbolt safety. I bought it last Fall at a gun show in Valley Forge, for both hunting and SHTF.
It's fitted with a Williams FP336 rear sight and Firesight red front bead. To allow more light onto the front sight I drilled a hole in the top of the front sight hood (not shown).
The sling is a British surplus L1A1 sling, which is basically a nylon version of the Lee-Enfield sling. Light, rugged, simple. It's attached using a set of Uncle Mike's QD swivels.
I really wanted a butt cuff to carry extra ammo on the rifle. However, most cuffs don't work for lefties, the one I did find was $80. Instead, I picked up an Eagle Industries stock pack. Aside from 5 cartridge loops it has a zippered pouch which I put to good use.
Inside a Ziploc bag in the stock pouch, I put a few items which could come in handy out in the woods:
1. Pull-through made from about 5 feet of the orange pair of wires taken out of a piece of CAT5e cabling (I'm a network geek).
2. Several cleaning patches.
3. A small bottle of Ballistol (in an old Remoil bottle, natch).
4. Swedish fire steel wrapped in a rubber band so it doesn't rattle.
5. 35mm film canister filled with cotton balls saturated with petroleum jelly for tinder.

What an amazing run this is!
Had the 336 out this past weekend for a morning of metal plate wacking @ 100 yards. 16x12x5/8" thick steel and a couple grade 8 bolts, hung with a dog collar and a c-clamp to the backstop top rail = a reactive target and much fun. I highly recommend it. For ultimate satisfaction use only a sling, or go freehand.
I'd like to move out to 200, but sadly our backstop has been washed out by all the rain around here lately. :-/

I had the scope which came with a 336CS, and moved it over to my C.
It was ok, and I figured I'd appreciate it more with the LeveRevolution, but
I just had to take it off (gave it to a .30-06 Handi-Rifle).
I'm also tempted by some of the tacti-cool mods listed above. Can't do it.
The wood and bluing is still lovely, even after many hours of desert and woods wandering. Heck, I guess I'll have to find a beater for tinkering.
I just don't have the heart.
