I would not keep a gun that I do not trust to fire when I need it.
Strange things happen but if it happens often in practice I am not happy with it anymore.
The only gun I have really tossed was a magnum revolver that kept jamming closed. Manufacturer started with a T.
The rest are all keepers.

I trust the main four guns I use on a regular basis (in order of priority):
1) Mossy 590A1 12 gauge
2) S&W M&P 9mm
3) S&W 640-1 .357
4) S&W M&P 9c
Like others have said, if I didn't trust them then I wouldn't have them or count on them.

My Ruger SR9, Security 6 .357 mag., Stevens double barrel 12 ga., Stag AR15, None have ever had a malfunction that was attributed to the gun. and with the first three that was never.

For home defense nothing beats an 1187. For war I would do either my mosin, an SVD/PSL or a G36C.

Like just about everyone else I can answer the trust my life to part of the question with "all of them."
You ask what one gun would I trust most.
Carry? I alternate between two (2.25" Ruger SP101 today), but it is usually my SIG P228, so I guess that is the one for carry.
Home defense? 4" S&W 586 and 18.5" Remington 870 Wingmaster are both at hand. Depends on the situation, of course, but since the S&W is more portable I guess I would choose that as the one for home defense.
I'm just glad I am not in a situation through either crazy politics or unfortunate economics to have to settle on just one gun.

Series 70 Mk IV Gold Cup National Match. It was bought new by me after my stint in the Phillipines. I have shot 50,000 + rounds through it and never had a failure I couldn't handle in the field right there. Anyone who thinks a .45 Colt is "unreliable" should take the time to learn how to use one.

The firearm I would most trust my life to is the one I carry 24/7: a S&W 642 on my ankle.
Oh, to be sure, where the law allows, or where private property owners allow, I augment the 642 with either a 1911 or a S&W 686, both of which I "trust my life to." At home I am seconds away from bringing either a 12 ga. pump or AK-47 into action, either of which I also "trust my life to." But the item I carry everyday, everywhere, is the tiny .38 snubbie.
