What do you do with your carry gun when you are home?

When I'm out, I'm usually armed, but once at home I usually lock it up in the lockable compartment in the truck (garaged) and leave it there. Recently we got an SUV that the wife and I both drive and she doesn't have a carry permit so I don't want her accidentally taking out the SUV and risking a felony by having the gun locked up (but loaded) in the car with her if I happen to forget to get it out.

The obvious solution is for her to get her carry permit. I haven't quite convinced her yet but I am working on it. So in the meantime....

I'm thinking about a small wall safe in the garage or some other easily accessible area to store the firearm once I am home but I am reaching out to you all for opinions on what you do to see if anyone has a better idea.

I leave mine holstered and on my person until I get undressed.

I don't have the same concern you do since a firearm, loaded or not, in a compartment or container within a vehicle, is fine here even if no one in the vehicle has a carry license. Still, I don't leave one there. I guess if I did and my wife took it to work, she'd be outside the law because she works in a GFZ. If she got her carry license, she'd be good to go. I hope to have her get it soon; it's coming.

I wouldn't store it in a garage safe due to climate/humidity control issues. Just case it and bring it inside with your keys. If you have children or other "irresponsibles" in the household, lock both your firearm and your keys together in a strongbox or small safe.

Mine is either on my person or stored in the same location all the time. In the house, in my bedroom. When not on me, it gets unloaded and stored. I have kids, so storage is something that must be done in a "it goes here in this manner", not just put somewhere convenient. My kids are fairly responsible, but they are still kids.

If it's in the truck it stays in the truck. If I am carrying it goes on the nightstand when I go to bed. No kids.

There is always hope your wife will come around. My wife of 40+ years, who had never shown an interest in firearms, came to me last year and told me that she and her sister wanted me to teach them to shoot so they could get their carry permits. Since then I've been taking them 2x a month to the indoor range. They haven't applied for their permits yet but they are ready. Thankfully, in Texas, you don't need an LTC (License to Carry) to carry in your vehicle as both those grandmas carry their .380's wherever they go and lock them in the trunk when they get out. At least that's what they tell me they do.
I keep my EDC on or next to the chair I usually sit in when I'm home. Lock it up at night when it's rack time. Have another on the nightstand that does 24/7 duty.

No, I don't usually wear my EDC on my person when I'm at home; but I do keep it (or another one just like it) within easy reach all of the time; and I, also, sleep with a pistol underneath my pillow every night.

Bad idea in my opinion. (first underline) I ALWAYS need to be aware of where my gun is. (second underline) My carry gun goes to my nightstand by night, pocket when traveling, secret place downstairs by day inside, and is ALWAYS unloaded or on my person when grandson comes to visit. Not to be overly harsh, but there can be no "forgetting'...

Always keep it on my person when I'm out and about, however when I'm home I sit it on my dresser at home (no small kids in my home), I have easy access to other loaded guns thru out my home, that get locked up when ever I leave for any length of time. Usually keep the doors locked, at all time so anyone trying to break in would give me ample time to get to one of my firearms.

It's on me, or in the lockbox beside the bed. My doors stay locked unless I am walking through them, so I can run the 14 feet to my bedroom before anyone can kick the door down.

My car gun stays in the car in the garage, the pocket pistol goes on top of my fridge with my wallet and car keys. As for being armed at home, I have firearms stashed all over my house in each room for emergencies.

Open carry is legal in Ohio. So if your wife keeps the handgun in a door pocket or cupholder when driving she's good to go.

If it's loaded, it's on me when I'm awake & in/on the nightstand while I sleep. I have a cabled, metal lockbox in my vehicle for when I must disarm & unload (courthouse, post office, etc).

Everyone's situation is unique, & - as long as safety & security are maintained - your solution can be unique as well.

After a lot of thought, I think a small wall safe in the garage wall is the way to go. Right next to the garage opener.

Something like this I'm imagining.

Mine stays with me. I leave it in the drawer of my nightstand with my 9mm w/light. In the event of a situation where we could be separated, she will have a gun also.

On my belt when I'm out, in a small bedroom safe otherwise. Safe is open at night. Anything in the safe is loaded and ready to fire. Safe is locked when we are not home or when anyone but my wife and I are here.
