If truly interested in the opinions of others, take your pick from any of about a half dozen threads already posted on the topic and read away....while there may be an AMMO shortage, theres no AMMO THREAD shortage around here
1. Worried they can't go to the range at their usual schedule
2. Worried prices will skyrocket so they want to stock up.
3. Worried they can't get ammo they need to defend their home should someone break in
4. Maybe starting to worry about long term availability should something elese happen (gov regulations or disharmonius society.)
Folks in general are unprepared for most anything. I bet many don't have much food and water at home as well or much emergency money in the bank should sometehing happen. I'm not sure a THR person is the typical american.
Because they weren't prepared and when the shortage hit they decided to buy as much as they could to get a stockpile going. Same folks who buy up all the food at the grocery store during hurricane season.
BTW I think "gunnies" are a dumb name to refer to "firearms enthusiasts".
Not being prepared may apply to those who may shoot a box or two a month. If you shoot multiple matches across multiple platforms there is simply no way to be "prepared". If I had to be "prepared" that would require another 500 sg feet just for the ammo.
