Pocket Holsters

My 642 rides in a Mika round cut. I've used other pocket holsters in the past, but the Mika is the best. By far.

A couple of upgrades this past week. The grip (pachmayr compac) is a direct result of the Buffalo Bore. I received three boxes. I already put 10 rounds through the 642 and another 10 through a rented GP100. While the grip just arrived a few hours ago and I haven't been to the range yet it sure feels a helluva lot better than the stock grip did.

Picking up a 442 tomorrow

I'll be picking up a new "no lock" 442 tomorrow and would very much appreciate a check-list of what I should look for before paying my money and walking out the door. I know there are general check-lists all over the web, Any specific "look fors" for the 442/642 series. Any history of canted barrel on these little rascals? Thanks.

tguil,

None that I'm aware of. If you stick to the steps in the revolver checkout thread (found here) you should be good to go. Good luck! Now get a holster for that gun and a box of LHP's and you should be good to go.

In other news, I thought I'd share my spiffy new banner image featuring the M642 and also the M64, two of my very favorite wheelguns.

Lastly, I'm strongly considering another snub purchase for my birthday. Anyone have a good reason that it shouldn't be another x42? I'm really warming up to the idea of carrying a brace of snubs as my daily carry.

I took the 642 out with its new Pachmayr Compac grips today. The Buffalo Bore 158 +P LSWCHP was MUCH better with these grips. The "HOLY MOTHER THAT HURTS" aspect was removed completely. I am much more confident in this gun/round combination now.

Also, my range has surprisingly good prices and availability of ammo. Picked up a 20 round box of Speer 135gr +P Short Barrel Gold Dots for $19.99. Sweet.

Picked up my 442 early this afternoon. A nice lookin' gun for being sort of "tacticool".:D Will get it out later today. It's surprisingly light compared my Model 36. It will probably be used pretty much for pocket carry only. Now about the matte black finish. It's OK to wipe down with CLP after cleaning the rest of the gun, right?

I was cleaning my 642 tonight, and I noticed that my clear coat has started flaking on the back-strap. I knew that the clear coat did not hold up very well, but I expected it to last more than 7 months.

I have carried it almost everyday, and put 1000+- rounds through it. It is not that big of deal to me. It is my carry piece and I know that it will show wear, but I expected the finish to last longer than it has.

I have looked all over our LGS and the big boys, nobody carries the 135 gr Gold Dot Short Barrel, Ammotogo had some for about 5 minutes:cuss:.

I know. I've been looking around too. I was shocked. They had the 135 +P short barrel in .38 as well as the 135 short barrel in .357, the 125 and 158 in .357 and some other size in .38. They also had virtually ever weight of Hornady XTP and FTX in both .38spl and .357. None more than $19.99/25. Not one of my ammo purchase places online had it. ammo2go, ammoman, sgammo, midway, cheaper than dirt, streichers, tds...nobody

scottishclaymore, I'm with you. Definitely considering buying a second 642 or a 442 and carrying both!

41, after more than seven years of almost daily carry, my poor little 642 has no finish left on the backstrap or bottom of the grip frame, the edges are all pretty much polished, too, and there are thin spots and polished through spots in other places.

Doesn't bother me in the least. I was shooting it along side my model 13 last week, knocking an antifreeze bottle around at about 15 yards. Model 13 was sweet, magnums or specials, but I surprised myself at how well I actually did with the 642. Seemed like I couldn't miss. That's what it's about, really - carrying it around all the time, and shooting it. Finish is ... just finish.

Hi Warp,

>I both attend school and work at a college which is illegal for carry in GA, though you can have it in your car.

You might want to research this a bit. I work in the Technical College System of Georgia. TCSG quietly revised its weapons policy in 2010. Whereas before weapons were "strictly prohibited", now it's strictly prohibited to carry a firearm "in a manner contrary to state or federal law." That is, if you're legal to carry off campus, you're legal to carry on campus too.

Regards

Wrong. If you do so you are violating the law. State law prohibits carrying a gun on campus.

http://www.gacarry.org/cms/georgias...frequently-asked-questions/#Places_Off_Limits

Q: May I carry at technical schools and colleges?
A: No! However, a person with a Georgia Weapons License may carry a firearm while dropping off or picking up a student and also may keep a firearm in a motor vehicle while parked on campus.

Warp, I wonder when that page was last updated.

Check out http://www.times-herald.com/Local/Ga-Senate-approves-Seabaughs-gun-bill-1060249 , which says in part "Colleges, technical schools, churches and bars would be allowed to make that decision for themselves."

Your interpretation differs from that of the president of my technical college.

I'll go with his interpretation for now, but am researching this further.

~~~
Added: OK, looking at section 1-4 a 1 of the actual law, I'd say you're right.
Can we see some pictures of 642/442's that are beat to hell? I see a lot of pictures of new shiney ones, but I kind of like to see some with a bit of character. Mine is near mint, so I can't contribute.
Yes, I am right. Okay, not really. It's not me, it's my source. I just learned a few years ago to go to www.georgiacarry.org to find out about these things.
I really wish I could legally carry my 642 on campus as I most certainly would, regardless of policy.
One of our Member jt1's rig looks like this. Detroit backup in a Smartcarry.
Here is my pair to draw to:
I have a 638 - just shot it. And my wife shoots a 642. They are both great. I sport mine in a AIWB made by Rhome Desbien.
Warp, one should certainly buy right. I construed the issue as sourcing and availability.
I did say it was pricey. A dollar per round is more the going rate for SGDFSB.
Any thought on Double Taps 125 grain bonded +P for a 642? Price is about the same as 135gr. Gold Dot Short Barrel and the velocity is about 100-150 fps more.
Not much out on the net for the .38 special, at least from what I can tell.
