While cleaning and checking my new 642 I noticed that with trigger back and hammer down the firing pin protruded through the breech face a mere .010 inch or less. This gave me cause for concern. Rather than calling S&W and spending an eternity listening to bad music on hold I emailed them. I soon got a reply thanking me and saying I should hear from a service rep within 5 days. 5 DAYS?

Marv is this your first S&W?
As advised if you have a concern listen to the hold music, read some emails and if the Customer Service person seems something is amiss they will pay the freight both ways and hopefully and ultimately make things right.
The sooner the better.

Who cares how far out it protrudes if it goes BANG every time?

No, not my first S&W. I have a few M10's and a M37 bought used and a M67 bought new in early '80's. The firing pin protrusion on them is .025" +/-. That's why I'm questioning this one.

frame-mounted firing pin on your new 642 vs hammer-mounted on all your older ones may be the difference. does it fire rounds at present?

With what little I've shot it, no misfires. Talked with a rep at S&W this morning. He basically said "If it ain't broke don't fix it". I'll go with that.

If it fires 100% of the time, the firing pin sticks out far enough to do the job, regardless of the measurement.

One reason I like 642's is that I can get a very high grip on it, presuming your stocks are open in back. Higher than the hammer models. This allows faster recovery and better accuracy during rapid fire.

Think its time to shoot mine some more for some testing.

Btw that 642, it shoots groups like I've never seen in a snubbie. Amazing. However when cleaning it I noticed, what seems to look like, tool marks in the barrel. They are circular marks that run the same direction as the muzzle crown. I've taken a photo to hopefully illustrate it.

I've got a whole bunch of wheel guns, none of them have marks in the barrel like this. I don't think it's something that has to be worn in on the gun either. Anyone ran across this before? Honestly it's more of a pet peeve than anything, the gun groups so well I'm not going to send it back for "fixing" anytime soon!

I took this with my camera phone - added the arrows so you can *slightly* see the marks.

Btw, if I were to express my distaste with this "barrel made on Friday afternoon" who should I complain to? S&W because it's supposedly a Performance Center pistol or Talo because it's one of their Special Editions?

I have noticed that there were m642 Talo additions that had worked action. Are they significant or noticeably better?

Second question, are the inner workings of the m649 double action the same as the m642 (other than a shortened hammer + shrouding)? Finally is the 642 superior to the 649 in any way? The 649s seem as rare as hen teeth.

This is a Performance Center Talo, so someone, either Talo or S&W made the action butter smooth. I can bring back to full lock every time with ease in double action and break the trigger without pulling or pushing. I own a bunch of s&w wheel guns and in double action, this one is the nicest by far.

I can agree with this statement. I just bought a 642 Talo that has the blue Performance Center tag on it. It is such a smooth and buttery trigger pull. I bought it on the spot. I haven't had time to take it to the range yet, but I have bought several boxes of 38 special ammo and a pocket holster. All I need now is an IWB holster. I would like to get a good one. Any suggestions?

Haha - those grips are something else. I'm actually trying to upgrade to maple for most of my firearms. Nice burl patterns, sustainable harvesting, can be ground into sugary syrup in an emergency...
