I used to have my winchester 1300 behind my bed with some shells near by. Never kept it loaded and I always kept the trigger lock on.
Keys would be nearby and if I had to, I could have the gun ready in like 10 seconds loaded. However, up here, in the frozen north, break-ins (where I live anyways) are pretty much nil, especially when someone is home. Even if there was a break in, I have never heard of one happening where the crook brought a gun of any kind lol. Up here it just doesn't happen as much.
Point being, I now just lock up all my firearms, the closest thing I have to ready to rock is a 1911 in my safe with loaded mags right beside it.
