Do you ever deliberately avoid THR topics?

Partial rant:
I'm getting increasingly irritated by threads amounting to "they're about to come take away all your suff - whatcha gonna do about it?" Why? They're not. Too many people have gotten too wrapped up in their own heads about black-booted boogeymen, failing to realize that - aside from a few relatively small jurisdictions and a little paperwork - they can buy pretty much as much as they want of what they want. Federally, the only thing we can't buy is post-'86 machineguns, missiles, and nukes; most states/cities are not much more restrictive than that. I just saw another "what if there's another AW ban?" thread ... failing to note that (A) he can currently buy whatever he wants now, (B) there is no viable prospects of another AWB coming to a vote much less being passed, (C) Heller pretty much voids the possibility thereof, (D) the last one was, for all the hype, mostly just a matter of useless cosmetics (flash hider verboten in 95% of actual infringements), and (E) not likely considering how badly the last one fared.
Upshot: "They" are not "coming to take your stuff". Suck up the irritation, contribute to some worthy causes, and go buy whatever you want. Want a rack full of M4geries? go nuts. Want a howitzer? scrape up $125K and I'll introduce you to the seller. Don't like the local restrictions? move (I did).

Ergo, I try to ignore "what if they come for your guns?" threads. Rant over.

Amen ctdonath. We'll see what 4 years of Obama brings, but I'm not thinking we'll see another national gun ban (AWB) again in quite a long while.

No, there's nothing I avoid.

And while we're at it:

Imagine that this year, during hurricane season, a massive hurricane hits your area at the same time as a terrorist attacks your town and the government is there with the national gaurd to confiscate your guns. Now, what is the best rimfire cartridge to deal with it?

Edit: Oops, I forgot zombies. Terrorist zombies.

Another set of topics I'm learning to avoid is the "can you believe the mean thing the gunstore owner said to me..." threads.

It's almost always either (1) a person who slams the gun into the glass counter and wonders why the clerk says something or (2) a clerk who does something really bizzarly rude (as if it's the first time that's ever happened in human history).

Serriously, what the hell do those threads acomplish? Like I'm really going to hop in the car and drive to New Mexico to boycot Ralph's House O' Guns becuase the store owner had bad breath and picked his nose.

I only post in threads that interest me...usually. However I avoid threads such as:
- Anything in Legal
- Political
- Caliber wars
- Gun wars (AK vs AR is a prime example). Wow, no one has metioned that yet.
- "What should I get for X amount of money?" This one drives me nuts. You can rest easy knowing that 9 of 10 of these will be someone who thinks you should tell them what to buy without mentioning what it may be used for. I don't think any of us can read minds.
- Anything AWB

Probably some I'm missing. Eh, you get the idea :)

You see, that's the way I wish I could approach THR. But lately I seem to be bogged down in odd debates and issues that don't seem to help our fellow members. And that's an important concept for me. I think that's why I'm here to begin with.

This last few days were hard because of my fears. I like to be here because we're not a mercenary outpost forum. Other than KF, this is one of the few places where folks have intelligent conversations on knives, without the "shiv hokum."

I'll answer a member for pages if he wants info on things like "what's the best stone for S90V in Rc 62." That helps him, and probably 100 lurkers I will never know.

However, threads like "best upper for SHTF" just switch me over to a rousing game of Zuma.

Avoid , not really , avoid comment on yes . Tho there are other subjects i will use the entire Open Carry set as an example . I have NO problem with Open Carry , If you want to do it then do it , its your life and your gun as well as ( in some jurisdictions ) all our right . I carry , but i carry concealed even out on the ranch as a rule . Where i live Open carry is legal . I CHOOSE not to open carry , and at some expense i might add ( oc is free, a ccw in colorado is anything but ) . From the reactions i have seen i would rather be a " normal " person advocating gun rights than an " in your face " advocate of same . The quotes come from folks in my small rural area where everyone owns guns so i can only imagine the learning curve for metro areas .
Durn ... i just justified my choice as how to " bear " arms . See why i avoid such threads ?? LOL

Lots of topics I generally avoid:

--Most political topics
--Any thread that tries to draw folks into a religious debate
--Any "club" thread
--Any thread driven by paranoia (these seem to involve SHTF, JBT, TEOWAWKI, and/or other annoying acronymns)
--Any thread where the OP asks a question that they clearly made no attempt to answer on their own (i.e. "What's the URL for AIM Surplus?", "What's the MSRP for XXX?")
--Any thread started for the sole purpose of bragging about a good deal someone got
--Any thread started for the sole purpose of bashing one type of gun
--Any thread started or dominated by certain forum members who take an entire page and multiple posts to answer (or obfuscate) simple questions
--Any thread started by someone from this country who has absolutely no grasp of written English (threads started by non-native English speakers are fine)
--Any thread involving bears

All that said, it's a credit to THR and its members that there is still so much worthwhile discussion here.

Yes I avoid topics of discussion. Sometimes I have to avoid this board for a while because you guys move at a speed I'm not used to.

While there are a few topics that don't really interest me, I do tend to avoid topics started by some members. No names mentioned of course but, much like a good garage, there are some real tools here.

Skim most

read all of some
read a little of most
only avoid black gun threads
Only respond to the few that trip my trigger

I am afraid I may be responsible for tactical wheelbarrow with a 20MM mounted on it. I have been using that line for a long time when the threads get really silly on other sites.

I'm another dinosaur veteran who has to read about the ninjas who are going to pack 40 pounds of magazines, 3 rifles, 2 pistols, 7 tactical knives and a folder plus 5,000 rounds of ammo and a 3 weeks supply of rations, water and medical gear then glide through the night like a shadow. I want to see that done. No really, I want to see it done because I must have missed something in my training or I had the wrong instructors.

I'm actually quite surprised by the discussion. I expected a few jokes, maybe some political jibes.

As I write this there has been 430 hits.

And sure, we got lighthearted, but there was some very serious, well thought out responses. I didn't see all of that coming.

Of course there are topics that I skip. If you try to read the whole board you are spending WAAY too much time online.

Thinking back, I should have skipped this topic as well...

Interesting question. On the positive side I have found some threads on the history of firearms and their technical features fascinating. More technical, factually based discussions of gun laws or proposed laws is useful to me.

I have come to dislike any thread involving police, for they invariably descend into cop bashing. Same with threads on gun laws in any particular location, in the US or overseas. Before you know it, Chicago is being compared to Mordor, and the location under discussion is invariably a cesspool filled with evil. Any threads which start veering into the "the US is a tyranny" territory.

"What gun do I buy for the upcoming AWB" makes me grit my teeth.

The US is both a democracy_and_a republic :)

Despite that I seem to get sucked into these threads :)

I make no distinction when reading threads. Some are informative, some funny, and some are not worthy of my time.

I won't post if I feel a 'rant' coming on, or I can't add something of value. My dignity is important to me and I am not willing to sacrifice it for the sake of passion.

I wish to be viewed as a gentleman and that must be earned.

Bill.

This is exactly the problem I was having, especially late into the evening.

I have a mercurial temper, and I can only hack so many idiots and ninjas. And like we have noticed, I have no time, in fact zero time, for things that malign police or soldiers.

I think the thing that infuriates me about mall ninjas is their cavalier attitude that they are "just as good as the real police." Every one have have met and will meet is a hollow suit.

Naturally, they post when I read for entertainment--late at night.

In curtailing that circular problem, I'm making a list of things I will not read and to which I will not respond. I like it here, I too do not want to seem impolite or discourteous, and I should know when I'm being sucked in.

I have been thinking about starting a similar thread so here I go.
Number one on my list is the "have you ever shot, killed or stabbed someone"
NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS then when you call them on it and say it is not a thr topic they get all indignant those jokers hit my ignore list fast. yes I have had ptsd and im not gonna feed you lust for gore. Its not a subject i would talk to a stranger about
wow I feel better!!!
I also ignore in no particular order, mall ninja, polls, trolls, strategies, anything on youtube, versus threads' what gun for.....? shtf, teotwawki, What would you do,religion, politics, gays, fanboys, and any thing else I think is stupid
On the other hand I will be all over someone who demeans someones economic status - if all a guy can afford is a hi-point god bless him
Dont ever talk about lifestyes either been a biker 43 years, so what, own my own home, have 2 ex wives, great grandkids, and run a good healthcare business, sure some in my club has been arrested, oh well made a bad choice didnt ya. Life is hard but it is harder if your stupid.
Too old for wasting time on topics that are going nowhere, only got so many heartbeats left gonna use them wisely

Well said Bikerdoc.

Biker

I avoid "Surveys" like the plague.

I believe that most "surveys" are put on by THRs who just want to see some thread started by themself. The threads are almost always ill-conceived, not thought out and, for the most part, downright silly. :barf:

"If you were stranded on an island, which gun would you want...?" Huh?!?

"If you could only own one gun........" Come on! If the gov't only allowed one gun/person do you really think they'd allow you to own a Abrams main battle tank w/a 105mm-120mm cannon attatched? :banghead: How stupid! The gov't would be at the point of telling YOU which gun you could own.... & I'd believe it would be on the order of a single-shot shotgun or a pellet rifle (limited to 600fps).

I used to look at those but have since seen the stupidity of "surveys" and refrain from even looking at them anymore, unless I need a chuckle. ;)

I avoid threads about the .30-30 or lever action rifles. I have owned and been disappointed with two KelTec P3AT's so I avoid anything written about them unless it talks some real trash.
