Glock 20 Stopping Power?

I've lived in Alaska the last 15 years or so, a little more than half my life. Most of my time in bear country, I'll have a big bore revolver on my hip. 44 or hot 357, most of the time .357. Most guys I know carry the same. 10mm is increasing in popularity but I don't think it will ever really compare to a purpose loaded magnum cartridge. And with the inherent reliability of a revolver vs autoloader I will always choose a revolver. The last thing I want when being charged by a mother grizzly is to limp wrist my Glock. Then your 15 round capacity gun turns into a single shot and you're dinner.

A few years ago a guy got mauled and his son put the sow down with a 454 casull but not after tearing off the guy's face. There's some rather graphic pictures you can find on the internet. Last year a soldier lost his life to a mother grizzly.

The only semi auto handguns I've owned that have never malfunctioned in some way were Walther's and they don't make a 10mm, all of the Glocks I've owned and fired have hiccuped at least once. In a life or death situation I'm not putting any room for error or user induced malfunction. I'll keep my revolvers.

I used to have a 10mm and I could shoot it very well. It was a G20. I found as a non-reloader, ammo was too sparse and expensive. Still wish I'd kept it but if I was thinking about addressing your circumstances, I'd probably be on the same track and with an eye toward the xtreme penetrator Lehigh or underwood, possibly Buffalo bore. Those are some spicy biscuits and they will drill in deep.

You mentioning the Xtreme penetrator made me think: I don't know that there are any factory 10mm offerings that are bad. Lots of different loads get mentioned on 10mm threads, and it's hard to fault any of them. The same can't be said for most other semi auto cartridges.

With the resurgence of the 10mm it has me wanting one. The Glock 20 is at the top of the list.
Many people complain about some of the factory 10mm auto ammo being 40s&w velocity at best. I like having a good power level spread available for my firearms. 40 level practice ammo and even hollow points for self defense is great. Stout 10mm wilderness carry ammo makes the 10mm a viable option.
No different than 38 special and 180 grain hardcast for the 357mag. Or 44 special out of the 44mag.

I've used a 10mm since our county issued them in the late 90s and I shot a friend's Glock. No idea how many deer/cattle etc etc ive put down with them. Usually 200 GR xtp at 1200ish fps. But also tens thousands of 180 gr cast bullets through my 10 or so 10mm. Its a good round. Ive bragged it up to probably 50 people over the past 20 years, who have went and bought them in everything from delta elite to Glock to sig 220 to smith and xd.... not a single person who bought one liked it and only one person kept theirs ( a delta that he don't shoot at all).

At this point I think it's the best woods carry semi automatic that's not crew served..... by far(desert eagle, wildey etc) but it's a niche gun IMO. No matter who you are, you will have faster split time with a 9/40 than a 10 using real 10mm ammo. I used to deny that but after seeing those 50 or so people struggle over the years I acknowledge that it's just not best for most people.

For raw power 44 mag revolver wins, especially with longer barrels. But they are also bigger, heavier, limited to 6 rounds and there isn't a practical way to attach a light.

The 329 i usually carry is both lighter than even the Glock and smaller in any thing other than the cylinder itself and even that is pretty close to my Glock 20/29. But again the first shot is more powerful... but at the expense of huge split times.
