Is it really safe to carry an automatic with one round loaded in the chamber?

Let me say right off there is nothing healthier than a debate using the “devil’s advocate” role to either strengthen one’s position or show the absurdity of it; hopefully the former.
For one thing, I would venture to say that most of the responders don’t even possess a ccw permit. They can fantasize at the range, but nothing else. BTW, keep your distance from these range “commando’s”. More importantly; don’t have the mind-set or the will to pull the trigger even if their life depended upon it. They carry as a bluff for an impending threat; you might as well have an empty pistol….Percentages are on your side since many of these experts in law enforcement & or have PD training schools will admit that they have never fired their pistol at an individual. Just a strong verbal command and the sight of the pistol was enough to diminish the threat.
If you are going to be “blind-sided” or are in Condition White; it doesn’t matter if your are in #1, or 3, or whatever…However, if you are aware and can be proactive, like in a parking lot, you have the time to “sling-shot” a rack…When nerves and stress are tight you do not want to hit your mag release or look down at the safety to make sure it is off. Why do you think many of the leading authorities in firearm training, publicly and mostly privately, will tell you that they do not recommend the rank & file LEO’s to carry “cocked-n-locked”? Lack of training & clumsiness where they can’t even keep their finger off the trigger while unholstering has caused too many AD’s, especially in the military.
To the CLOSET #3's, come out & defend your position!;) Don't be intimitated by their web-names or post #'s. Appreciate all the interesting responses....

Mad Magyar.... where's the graveyard you've filled up?

I've done time as a soldier, bouncer, and L.E.O..... and I would not stake my life on any handgun that wasn't ready to fire.

The times I've really needed a gun, I've needed to be able to use it with only one hand...

What's your background?

Mad Magyar,

So is it a crystal ball or just the awesome powers of your mind that allow you to tell so much about the training, qualifications and mindset of the posters on this forum?

Either way, why not go make millions on the stock market with your ESP and quit the supercilious attitude toward folks you've never met.

Oh, and the "I was only playing Devil's Advocate" trope is a little played out.

Either come up with solid, documentable arguments from your own actual point of view and support them or don't make them at all. The Devil hardly needs assistance in the dock.

Man, if I suggested this to the former Marines that comprise our Firearms Training Unit they'd probably make me choke myself. Sorry, but this guy's way off base.

Quote: "The excuse is:"And what do you do if you don't have a free hand?" The old, handicap argument if you don't have anything else to say..."

Maybe he can explain that to one of my fellow agents who was held at gunpoint in the vestuble of his mother's apartment building. He distracted the guy by pretending to reach for his wallet with his weak hand, drew one-handed, and emptied his Sig P229 into the guy. Think he'd've been able to do that and walk away if he'd had to rack the slide first?

Personally, I'd like to know what law enforcement experience Mad Magyar has to justify his assertions.

Starting to repeat itself in places and off on tangents in others.

4 pages is probably about all the useful "life" in this one. Let's move on.

Thanks in advance.
