M1911 vs Glock: The Gunshop Showdown

Carrying a 1911 for CCW is like driving a 60s era mustang for a daily driver.

The kind of people who do that aren't doing that because the mustang does anything better than a current car. They're doing that because they're car guys.

1911 makes a nice CCW piece though, Its very slim which allows it to be easily concealed.

Will that take the 1911 out of the military junk classification? I think not. Glock sure is selling a lot of pistols around the world and everybody seems to going polymer too and copying the design even in the face of lawsuits. Hello Sigma!

The SIGMA came out almost 20 years ago. Glock actually copied HK I believe as they made the first polymer pistol.

Sorry that is just not true! The 1911 junking process started during WWII but like any thing Government it moved so slow. Just another fact at you there sir!

As I said, you want to discuss things as an adult, stop deliberately mischaracterizing things. The S&W was developed for the pistol trials of 1954. Last time I checked, WWII ended in 1945.

All that proves is that the military was considering NATO standardization as early as 1954. What is sailing completely over your head is that they may have considered replacing the 1911 with something else at that time, but they decided not to do it. Clearly there was enough satisfaction with the weapon that it was not thought to be worthwhile to replace it at that time after all.

The longest serving pistol ever used by our military is the S&W revolver. Still there to this day, MIM parts and all!
I hate to break it to you, but the S&W revolver has always been a second line weapon. Back in WWII, the S&W revolvers went to arm guards at defense plants and other second line duties. The front line troops got 1911s. Try again.

How about George Patten for starters!

Not an issue gun, he was a general, He could've carried a .50 caliber muzzle loading pistol if he wanted to.

Once again, Who still uses a Revolver in the military?

. I guess we will never get into the 1911 design flaws because they are all being denied as usual by the users. Oh Well, I tried!
No you haven't. You've just repeated "junk" over and over like a parrot. Repetition is not an argument.

Wow, you must be in the know if you can claim that most of our special forces use an outdated weapon. Russia made a polymer revolver some time back, the REX MP412.

This is really starting to reek as a troll.

Time for me to leave.

Billy hit the nail on the head. You made proclamations that the 1911 was military junk. You've been given several examples that run counter to your claims, yet instead of addressing them, we got the same old question of "What can the 1911 do that a Glock can't do?"

Again, I would think that in-the-know certified gunsmiths/trainers should be well-heeled on the MEUSOC pistol, it's history and current use. The holier-than-thou attitude you've displayed is a smidge more offensive than Michael Jackson eating popcorn at the Thriller screening.

You say "junk" but you don't say why that's what it is. You keep repeating "numerous design flaws" but somehow don't seem able to tell us what those flaws are, exactly. And since you want to talk about pesky facts, how about the ones you are pointedly ignoring? Like the fact that this "military junk" is still the choice of the FBI HRI, LAPD SWAT, some army Delta Force Units, or the above mentioned MEUSOC pistol? What about those facts?

You're simply being foolish. Something like the Chauchat machine gun, or the Japanese Type 94 handgun, for example, could be accurately termed junk. But a pistol that served on the front lines for 74 years, outliving several other generations of small arms, and which is still the first choice for many elite shooters, who can select their own gear from whatever is available, cannot, in any accurate or realistic sense of the term, be labelled as "junk."

You don't like the 1911. Fine, we get it. You like other guns better. That's perfectly okay.

But accept the fact that that is just your opinion, and many knowledgeable and skilled pistol shooters disagree with you completely.

That should have been "Healed" but I will just consider the source and use that as an explanation if it is all right with you sir! Have a good One.

Playing spelling bee police is usually what heppens when one can no longer back up the claims they are making. All the so-called "facts" that you have not even come close to specifying, yet alone backing up.

I'd wager I'm speaking to a Glock employee and on that note...PEACE!

The smaller caliber Glocks feel wierd in my hand but the .45 ACP and 10mm feel okay but not great but I still don't like them at all, tried them and moved on.

I don't even own a 1911 yet and the one my brother has feels slight uncomfortable in my hands.

527, you are definitely the first person I ever heard say the 1911 felt even slightly uncomfortable in the hand! Even non shooters I let shoot mine say it feels natural!

I'm pretty sure its just the SW1911, has a bit of an edge that digs into my hand next to the grip safety. I don't have alot of experiance with them but one Colt someone let me handle had the trigger of my dreams and actually had some aftermarket grips (Hogue I believe) that made it one of the best feeling guns I've even held next to the new production SIG P220.
