Now all we need is a few 20cal shooters to join in, and show off that newfangled 5mmRM that Centurion is making now. Rangerruck and Uncle Mike are you listening?

Is that Centerpoint any good. I have a hard time telling which inexpensive scope might be a winner. Some of the cheaper Tascos and Bushnells are really pretty good, but some are terrible. My WalMart carries the Centerpoints.

The CenterPoint is a good value, which I like for what it is, an inexpensive high-magnification optic that holds zero and has acceptable glass quality. The image starts to fade a bit at higher magnification, but other than that I have no complaints whatsoever. Despite the manufacturer's claim that it can withstand punishment from a .416Rigby, I wouldn't put it on anything above .22Mag. I can heartily recommend its use as a target rimfire scope and it would make an acceptable sporting rimfire scope due to the locking target turrets (making it more difficult to bump and loose zero), the only disadvantage for this use would be weight and size. The features are great, and while I generally don't care for an illuminated reticle, the green setting on this optic works well (red seems to blur too much for my taste). The target turrets are very useful for target work and can be set to "zero" to make return to zero very easy (as with most, but not all, target adjustments).

I purchased mine at WalMart and am not sure if any other retailer carries them, but from what I have heard they are actually manufactured by Crosman (yep the BB gun folks). For a hunting optic I would recommend a low-end Bushnell as they have good glass for the money and are lighter and smaller than comparable CenterPoints (at the expense of features, but these are unnecessary for hunting). I cannot recommend anything that Tasco makes other than the SuperSniper and that is a bit out of the league of the standard rimfire rifle. I have a lot of experience with optics (due to my mediocre eyesight) and generally will not recommend any "economy" riflescope other than the Bushnell, the CenterPoint is an exception when used on a rimfire, and may be fine for larger cartridges, but I have no experience with that and generally would prefer an optic that is either smaller/lighter (hunting) or very good quality (long range target use).

Thanks for the informed opinion. I'm looking for something strictly for 100 and closer target shooting--.22 lr and .22 mag.

The only hunting I do is muzzleloader deer season, which calls for only a rugged 4X.

I have a $75 Bushnell that's OK unless you go above 8X, and then it fogs up. I also have a discontinued BSA Sweet .22 that is somewhat better at higher magnification, but nothing to rave about.

I have a limited budget for optics, but I want to improve the accuracy of my Mossberg and 10/22, or at least give them a chance to be more accurate than I am.

Sounds like the CenterPoint would work perfectly, I can't think of anything better with the features it has in its price range...which is why I chose it (I had already dropped way too much cash on the 'ole 10/22, and oddly enough I think the bipod cost more than the scope :uhoh:).

:)

I'll probably try the Centerpoint. Thanks again for the recommendation.

By the way, here's another target you might like for the next 50 foot competition. It's originally for 10 meter air gun competition. It scores the way you are doing it this month: a ten has to be entirely within the black center circle, a nine in the white ring has to not touch any part of the orange eight ring, and a an eight has to not touch the surrounding white.

It's a pretty challenging set of targets, especially having to hold concentration for so many shots.

Let me know if I didn't get the pdf attached properly.View attachment Challenge_marksman.pdf

No problem, purchawk.

Thanks, the target looks good, would make a nice Halloween target (orange & black), and it kind of reminds me of Lyman's reloading gear.

:)

Not sure due to weather in Ohio, but I will make an effort to enter.

What class would an Win. Model 52B with scope be classified into?

It has weight added to the stock.

Sounds like a Limited Target Magnified Optics Division (use the bullseye targets). If there is a lot of bad weather then this month's match, as well as hectic schedules (due to the holidays) we might extend the match for an additional month (something that we haven't done in the past, at least since I have been the head nut). As Orlando said we typically have a match each month. Tired Traveler, thanks for joining us, this is a good place to take a break.

:)

Trouble is I have to do it behind the barn and into a wood pile, it's all weather dependent for me in NE, OH.:cuss:

What about my gun, what class, or should I wait until I submit the target?

My apologies if it wasn't clear before, it sounds like a Limited Target class, Magnified Optics division to me.

Hi

Entries from across the pond allowed ? :D

I'll try to shoot a couple of targets (red dot and 4x optic) for the sporting rifle class tomorrow night after the Christmas shoot at my local club.

I'll be using a V22 AR15, all stock, non-free float, std milspec lower etc.

Cheers
Steven

I just might get to the range today 32 degress, I can handle that

I have a question on the rules:

"Both Target Classes can be shot from any position, Sporting Class is shot from any unsupported position."

My question:
From the way I read this the class with magnified optics can be shot "supported" but the sporting class isnt? I must be not reading this right?
Thanks

Jolly good, Steven; you can join us rebels. :D

Basically, there are two divisions (magnified and non magnified sighting devices), and three sub-classes (unlimited target, limited target, and sporting). The sporting class is shot unsupported, both target classes may be shot supported, regardless of optics division.

Here's my first try with a .17. I dont know the scoring but understand that the.17 is giving up .047" in bullet diameter compared to the .22;)

Cooper M57M .17 HMR, Weaver T36, Hornady 17gr Vmax.

dubbleA, you must realize that everyone hates you now (before they just resented you for all of those beautiful, good shooting Coopers). Great shooting, nearly perfect score of 125 (out of 130)! Needless to say, you have taken the lead in the Unlimited Target Class - Optics Division.

:)

Maverick,
Thanks for the kind words. I am sure someone with a true unlimted target .22 will beat that. I have a couple of Anschutz's that I would like to shoot but their scopes wont focus at 50 ft.:(

What about the other words? :D

Thank gawd, we can all rest easy now. :neener: Got irons?...that sounds like the perfect setup for a nice set of redfield rear/globe front sights.
