Tell your mother "This is exactly the type of information I wish to know about her. If she's a wack-job, better to find out before you spent time and $$$ on her".
btw: when someone notices i'm carrying [ like when hugged ], I tend to use a semi-professional statement such as
"I'm duly authorized by the State of Florida to carry for official business". Of course, the official business is MY safety.
