csaws: The best ammo to use is Hornady's new plastic tipped 200 gr. LEVERevolution ammo. They claim it will allow our old 100 yard 'brush guns' to accurately hit targets up to 300 yards with 40% more energy and 250 fps faster mv. Surprisingly, I've found the cost to be nearly the same as Remington or Winchester 150 grain soft points, $20 - $25/box of 20, but I'm buying 35 Rem caliber.

You may have to snoop around, or order on-line, if you need 35 Rem caliber ammo, but 150 gr 30-30 caliber should be everywhere ammo is sold - and much cheaper. The Hornady 30-30 ammo will probably also be in the $20 - $25 range.

Go to the Hornady website and listen what they have to say about their new ammo. Click on "more info" in the red box to the right of the picture of the bullet and another window will open with a video. https://www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_se...&category_id=2f7af4cf2fbe021994131c5c629a8115

The only negative I can see in their new ammo is that they suggest you do not keep rounds stored in the tube magazine as spring tension could flatten the plastic tip and mess with the ballistics.

Thanks kiawahman. I have looked at this before, but it doesn't give a lot of detail regarding the variants of the 336.

Here are a couple of quick pictures. My apologies for the lackluster quality:

Anyone have thoughts on what variant this might be?

trigger job

I've been making some improvements to my 336CS...

my goal is to develop a hand load that will yield moa performance from the rifle.....

I first had to scope the rifle, as I just couldn't see the targets well enough at 100 yd to differentiate between what was me and what was the rifle / load.

My last outing, left me convinced that the trigger pull (though not really that bad) was still to heavy to achieve my goal.

Last week I saw the WWG Happy Trigger in Midway's December flier for only $78. So given that my BD is coming up I jumped on it.

Thanks to the good folks over at the Marlin Owners Site, I completely disassembled the rifle for the first time ever in prep. for my new Happy Trigger.

Much to my surprise, upon seeing the sear for the first time, someone has definitely worked on it in the past, which explains why my baby always had a pretty good trigger.

So after some more research, I took 3/4 of a coil off of the main spring and relieved some of the tension on the trigger spring. I didn't want to take any more off the sear at this point, so I hit it lightly with a hard Arkansas stone, trying to simply smooth out what had already been done.

Upon reassembly, the pull is noticeably lighter, but still has a ways to go.

I'll need to fire off some rounds to ensure I'm getting 100% detonation, before I do any more.

When the happy trigger arrives, I'm not sure if I'm going to put it in or not.

I may try to match the sear angle of the HT on my existing trigger and stone it glassy smooth. If that gives me the 2-3 lbs I'm looking for, I'll likely exchange the unopened HT for a William's Fool Proof aperture sight, as it has always been my intention to pull the scope off, once I had my "pet" load developed.

I had a Williams 5D on there previously and really liked it. But decided I wanted to get the click adjust Fool Proof, so I could dial up a "known good" adjustment for longer range work.

While checking out the new Cabalas in Scarborough, ME a few weeks back, I picked up a bag of 150 gr. Rem Core Loks. If I can't get their with either the CLs or my Sierra 150 gr. FN bullets, I'm making the switch to 170 gr. bullets. As I have a theory that the longer bullets interact with the micro groove rifling better.

So that's the happenings in my neck of the woods.

Been working on this project on and off (got pleasantly distracted for a year or so with EB Rs :) ) for some 2-1/2 years. Hope to achieve my 1 MAO goal soon.

Lesson learned, a true 5 shot, 1", 100 yd group is more difficult to achieve than most internet forums suggest.

Happy Trails

Hey,

Got a gun show used 336W this week. Probably paid a little too much for it ($340). It has a Tasco fixed power scope and see-thru mounts. Planning on removing it and adding XS sights and rail with a better scope. First three digits in the serial number is 000, so I assume it was made in 2000???

Any suggestions on the scope?? Mainly will be used for woods hunting in middle GA.

Welcome fireman, must be everybody is busy with other things.

One thing about buying firearms: if you're happy with what you bought, and have no plans to ever sell it, then forget about what you paid for it. Once it comes home to roost - it's priceless.

Amen on the come home to roost part. Havent't sold any in the last 10 years....traded a few here and there, but keeping the numbers the same.

Thanks for the input Kentucky, I'll show some pics when I am finished with it and let you check out the sights.

With the new Leverevolution ammo making it possible to 'reach out and touch someone' up to 300 yards, a scope is a big plus, but it all depends on your use. My 336RC in 35 Rem has a new Barska 4-9x40. Another 336 in 30-30 I'm buying I may leave with iron sights and use just 'standard' ammo for 100 to 150 yards.

Woo Hoo!:D i just joined the 336 club this morning, now I just have to try it out:p What kind of ammo do most of them like?

Buy a little bit of them all and make a day of it Monkyboy. Each gun is gonna prefer something different IMO. Mine will shoot the Remington stuff somewhat close to what I can do with the handloads. Winchester ammo brings it to minute of shotgun

Thanks MilsSurp, thats what I was wondering. Santa left some Remington managed recoil stuff with it (must have confused it with the buckhammers I was looking for to use in the 870) and I was wondering out of the remy, winchester ect usally worked best outta the 336. I see the Hornady LE stuff seems pretty good, gonna have to try some.:)

Thoughts on shortening the barrel to 16". Any ballistic pros or cons other than velocity? Thought comes from the Mad Ogre posting.

Sounds good.
