Took your advice and dumped the see-thru sites. I don't have a scout scope (yet), so I purchased a weaver base and leupold rings. Nice setup. Scope is nice and low.
Much better fit for me. I got it all boresited and am going to range on Saturday. Can't wait.
I will post results with a picture, since I haven't done that yet.

I have a sweet 336 made in 1948, no microgroove of course. The original front blade is bent and I'm looking for some good open sights. On this old version, there are two mounting holes tapped on the left side of the receiver, and a dovetail up front just behind the front band.

I will take both to heart! I WILL report back about the managed recoil ammo, I already bought a box to try. I do intend to sight in and practice before getting the porkers mad! My mom shot at them with a handgun (and missed) and had to run back to the door, they were ticked. She is 83, would have loved to have seen it! I am gkad the property is big enough to shoot to my heart's content!

If any of you guys live in the Duluth area, Fisherman's Corner in Hermantown has a very nice pre-cb safety 336 30-30 with a very dark-finished stock. It looks untouched. $289, iirc. Had it been a .35 Rem I might have made an offer. FWIW, Fisherman's Corner has an excellent no-questions-asked return policy on all used guns.

You might try emailing Tom Skinner at SkinnerSights.com and asking him if he has or can custom make you a set of ghost rings since your rifle is so old. I bet it looks cool and we could use some pics of an old model like that on the site.

Proud owner of a new to me used 336W serialed around '1972, 30-30...
I'll snap a pic or 2 when my web cam comes back to life... Eh, it has a gold drigger which was the only distinguisher of exactly which 336 it was...
I'm up in NE PA Wayne County area, so I Went to the range 100yd... groups were 17+" inches above aim point, and on to the above target but that still came within 1" of the bull, with the rear sight bottomed out.... Front post to dang low...
Ran to Gander Mountian and snagged a Wilson Firesite post haste... I have a shoot this Saturday and I'd like to use this beloved pride of mine...
Any who... The lever is fiercly sticking, no jams, no lock ups, except you really can't cycle the bad boy with bare knuckles... A grip change is needed and even then its as hard as a door jam...
It wont unlock readily... for such an old rifle I wouldn't think it would be so dang hard to... well there's that do and some that don't cycle as cleanly as the spankin new ones do...or a very well worked in piece of hardware.
I read and searched and searched some more, I went to the marlin owners forum as was suggested by Nema before deciding to post...
I have not fully disassembled this glorious piece of hardware
There's no notch on the bottom of the part #2- breach bolt...
I checked the lever areas for sharpies ... I dare not go near the extractor but I'm hard pressed thinking its either between locking bolt and or the extractor.
After its loose its a goose... no problems whatsoever..
Anyone dare to take this on?

I dunno. I have a '64 336 that's pretty stiff in the cycling, too. I'd like to smooth her up, but am too scared to do it myself...it's a heirloom from my grandfather...if it was a rifle I had purchased on my own, I'd be tearing her apart right now...
I've also got some interesting ideas what to do with a beater 336...
1)Strip and refinish. Parkerize and gun kote.
2) synthetic furniture
3) Good ghost ring sights. Maybe even a tritum front sight
4) action smoothing
5) scout mount for a red dot of some type- maybe even a Holosight...

Happy Saturday morning!
So I took Mr. 336 out to the range this morning.
Put it thru the paces shooting steel at 100 yards. One set of 5 off the table, another set sitting with the sling, another set kneeling with the sling, and the last set from prone position.
Ahhh, what a fine time it was. Nothing like welcoming the sunrise with a fine 30-30 crack, followed closely by a loud DONG ! !

Time of a .30-30 (given velocity of that bullet) to travel 100 yds to steel;
time of sound to travel back.
Too tired to do the math.

the first things that spring to mind are...
1) Check for a broken or bent ejector. If the spring part is broken it'll wedge in there and jam everything up tight.
2) Check your screws and see if any are working loose as you are shooting. Blue loctite works but stay away from RED, it's a little too strong for this application.
That's all that pops into mind right now, if I think of more I'll post.

it's not a 336, but my uncle has a marlin 30/30 that when you work the lever the trigger is attached and comes out too. any idea what model that is? an maybe how to improve a very bad trigger on it?

It was MANY years ago, when I was a kid.
I don't remember anything else about that rifle at all. (It could have been a BB gun for all I can recall today)
Are you sure it's a marlin?
I'm sure the pack that hangs out here would love to see a pic of that.
In any case, it's not a common rifle. Who knows... it may have collector value!

Greyling (and Fast Frank), Sounds like a Browning BLR not a Marlin.
(EDIT- Fast Frank is faster than me!)

Greyling22, It is probably a Mossberg model 472, they were only made in 1974-75. Externally they looked a lot like the Marlin 336s but the trigger was pinned to the lever and when the action was opened, the trigger stayed in the trigger guard. Just looking at them with the action closed they could be mistaken for a Marlin.

let me rephrase that, my uncle says it says marlin on the gun, and he knows his stuff so I am inclined to believe him. on the other hand he getting old and blind so he could be wrong.

I became a member today of the 336 club. I found one at a local pawn shop for $275.00. I believe it is a 1969, and has a few dings but I think it adds some class to it. I don't know if the price was good or bad either way I am sure it will be with me for a long time.

I'm going to take an old saying to heart, if it aint broke don't fix it..
Went back to the range, I drove some awesome holes in my SR1 @ 50yds.
The lever seems to cycle extremely well after discharge, my knuckles are waiting anxiously to go at it some more... I can handle a little sticking on coming out of lock with an empty chamber... who knows it may just deter sticky fingers one day...
Ahh... the sites, the sounds... The sites were placing me holes 17 inches above the bull. I found out today from a fellow enthusiast, this might be a good thing during the season... I'll know better when I take it to the hundred.
Anywho... Federal 150gr 20rnds 25 minutes... Third set of sites... this time
I actually used the dove tail from my Rem 700 30-06... it's scoped it won't miss it. And after adjusting the ramp ever 3 or 4 rounds I finally stayed in the black.
On one knee resting elbows on the table, I got 6-9's and 1-10. when all was said and done on the last rear site adjust. I believe if I pulled a bipod out and rested that way I could've pulled off a 1/4 inch group. I'll take the final 1inch to 2 inch group since the front site covered the black anyway. I like that minute of dear saying.... Okay, I'm jonesing for more... Thank you all, this is an awesome group....
