For handguns, in order:
For me, .22LR is king since I am mostly a recreational shooter. For all the usual reasons.
I love .38 Special and how it punches above it's weight for SD but remains mild. My 1st gun.
I like .45 Colt, like a beefier version of 38 Spl. Low pressure, mild (to wild). Plus the history.
.357 Magnum is powerful and versatile. And loud. Certainly enough horsepower for where I live.
.380 is mild and can be fun to shoot, but expensive for what it is and not really woods-capable IMO.
I own exactly one 9mm and may add another someday.
Ubiquitous, cheap, controllable, blah blah blah.
