State Receives Failing Grade for Gun Laws

Associated Press

The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence gave New Mexico an "F" on Thursday for approving a new law that allows New Mexicans to carry concealed, loaded handguns.

The group said New Mexico was among nine states that had "irresponsibly" weakened its state gun laws.

"New Mexico's grade for guns laws dropped from a D- to an F ... for passing a dangerous new law that forces police to let people carry concealed handguns," said a statement issued by the group.

The law allows New Mexicans 25 and over to get two-year licenses to carry loaded, concealed handguns after completing firearms-training courses and passing criminal-background checks.

The state Supreme Court this week rejected a challenge to the constitutionality of the law filed by a children's advocacy group and a physician.

The Brady group said New Mexico does not hold adults responsible for leaving loaded guns around children, does not require child-safety locks to be sold with guns and has no safety standards for handguns.

The group's statement also said New Mexico does not require background checks at gun shows.

It said that in 2001, the most recent year for which data is available, 27 children and teenagers in New Mexico died from gunfire.

The Brady group commended the state for restricting possession of guns by kids. New Mexico received an A- in that category.

The group graded the states on seven types of legislation it considers key to protecting children from gun violence.

Living in an "F" state. Does it get any better than this? :D

Oh, OOOOHHHH, the sky breaks down! There will be blood in every street, how could they do it, its against the chiiiilldren! Bring all the children to NY, IL, CA,Washington DC, they have the best anti-gun laws. It's a right wing conspiracy that this states have the highest murder and crime rates, just right wing lies.

Yeah right. This Brady-thing gets more and more rediculous. How many states now have permits? 45, 46?

How many of the 27 children and "teenagers" (yep, a 19 year old is still a teenager) were children? How many "teenagers".

How many children died from drowning, car accidents, poisoning, beaten to death by their "parents" etc. etc.

Questions, questions, questions...

"If it saves only ONE life..." Yep, how many child lifes were saved by an armed person? Naaah, this question is too inconvenient for the Brady bunch.

GUN CONTROL IS NOT ABOUT CHILDREN, IT'S ABOUT CONTROL.

Better put on your hazmat gear because it will be raining blood in NM. Just like it has in every other stay that has concealed carry.

Is there a list that shows all the states grades?

Ohio will have to wait until the next report card comes out to get downgraded to an F. The current grade is a D+. :(

You know, I'm getting a little tired of hearing about how I have no freedom here in Illinois. There are several other states worse then it is here. You all need to recognize that Chicagoland is not Illinois. I would choose Illinois over CA, MA, NJ, NY, MD, DC. Am I happy with everything on the RKBA issue here? No, but I would pick IL over any of those other places.

Anybody know how many "children and teenagers... died from gunfire" in Washington DC that year? They've got really great gun laws, you know.

oh the children:

What Jeff sez. Chicago is horrific.

As a former inmate of Chicago, and visitor to such "downstate" (how I hate that term, as if Chicago is the center of the universe) cities of Bloomington and Peoria, Illinois is not that much different from home. Yeah, they do have that awful, awful FOID, no LTCH and no Title II stuff, but without Chicago none of those inane laws would be on the books.

Wait a tic!!! Neuve Meheco gets an F with 25, training and no reciprocity and we're only a D-.:fire:

I demand a re-grade.:D

I hear Maine just got upgraded to a D- from a previous F. Supposedly we changed the minimum handgun purchase age from 16 to 18 and that lost us our coveted failing mark.

Bah.

Hmmm... almost the same number in DC as in New Mexico...

Of course the real number is the rate per 100,000 population. DC, with "good" gun laws has a rate of "child gun deaths" over five times that of New Mexico with their "bad" gun laws.

I don't understand...

I don't understand either, mdshooter. All those states with "irresponsible" CCW permits see their violent crime rates fall, while those wonderful countries that ban guns altogether, like UK and Australia, see big increases in gun crime.

The world is just so unfair.

I found the stats on New Mexico in 2001 at http://www.kidsandguns.org/study/states_deaths.asp?New+Mexico

Accidental Deaths:
Ages 15-19: 2

Suicide:
Ages 10-14: 1
Ages 15-19: 10

Homocide:
Ages 0-4: 2
Ages 5-9: 2
Ages 10-14: 3
Ages 15-19: 7

Also, from various other online sources:
There were 362 suicides in New Mexico that year. I could not find an actual number of attempted teen suicides, but one study indicated 8% of teens had attempted (not just contemplated, but attempted) in the previous month. A more meaningful statistic would be to examine successful suicides by all means.

New Mexico has among the top 3 worst suicide rates in the country.
In 46% of teen suicides, alcohol was present (2000 statistic).

Overall, it looks like New Mexico has more issues than guns (but we all probably guessed that anyway).

Yes, any death is a horrible occurance, but there are many other more dangerous problems causing deaths (roughly 88 deaths per 100,000 teens). Oddly, the only numbers easily available are deaths by firearms, auto accidents, and in childbirth.

Please excuse my rambling.

Hey, I have nothing against Illinois in general, I'm calmly waiting for a care package from Barrington as we speak. I do hope that shall-issue infiltrates your legisature some day though.

Whoo Hoo, go New Mexico.

but , but
Maryland lost 81 kids and we got an A-

7
TH
ANNUAL REPORT CARD – KEEPING KIDS SAFE FROM GUN VIOLENCE
Maryland Receives Grade of A- On Laws Protecting Kids From Guns
(Washington, D.C.) In its seventh annual analysis of state laws protecting children from gun violence, the
Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March, highlighted its progress in
protecting children from gun violence. The analysis noted an encouraging decrease in the number of children
killed by guns. This year, ten states received “Sensible Safety Star†awards for taking responsible steps to
make children safer from gun violence, but nine other states were sent to the “Time-Out Chair†for
irresponsibly weakening state gun laws.
Maryland gun laws received an A- because its gun laws are better than most states. Maryland requires guns to
be sold with internal child-safety locks, requires individuals to be at least 21 years old before buying or owning
a handgun and holds adults responsible for leaving loaded guns around children. Maryland also requires
ballistic imaging of handguns, bans Saturday night specials and assault pistols and limits gun traffickers with a
one-handgun-per-month limit. In 2001, the most recent year for which data is available, 81 children and
teenagers in Maryland died from gunfire.
Maryland could do more to protect children by requiring handguns to be fully “child-proofed†so that
only authorized people can fire them and by expanding its ballistic fingerprint law to include rifles and
shotguns. They could also strengthen their assault weapons ban and will indeed have the opportunity to
do so by acting on legislation that will be introduced in the upcoming session.
Unfortunately, 31 states received grades of D or F in this year’s report card. Not surprisingly, many of these
states have child and teen firearm death rates that are higher than the national average. For example, the
average firearms death rate of youth in the eight states that received an F grade was 33% higher than the
average firearms death rate for the 10 states that received an A or a B.
“Maryland has earned a good grade for protecting children from gun violence, but as long as any parent has
to bury their child due to gun violence our work is not finished,†said Lillian Pubillones Nolan of the
Maryland Million Mom March united with the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.
“Maryland should lead the country in protecting children from gun violence,†said Leah Barrett Executive
Director of CeaseFire Maryland. “We look forward to working with the legislature on sensible gun laws such
as a strong ban on all assault weapons and handgun safety licensingâ€

I wish Texas would pass a mandatory LEO signoff on Form 4s for NFA weapons like they did in Tennessee so we could maybe get an F rating. Stands for 'Fun'. You'd think TN would have at least an F cause of all the machineguns and silencers 'flooding the streets'.

Could anything be more illustrative of the MMM's view of the rest of us? We are children that need to be nannied and told what to do.

Dean Wormer: "Zero point zero.":D

VPC/HCI has some goofy criteria for evaluating the liberty of states. Seems to be a sliding scale wherever they are trying to stop something.:scrutiny:

May they always remain on the defensive!

New Mexico has won! Ohio has won! Missouri will win!

Forward to the abolition of the AWB! The destruction of the "sporting test clause"! And much, much more!

The less folks listen to the Brady Bunch, the safer this nation will be.

There's a little-known footnote to Brady's grading system: El Tejon's mere presence in a particular state results in an automatic one-step downgrade. :p
