x39 for in home defense?

An SKS would be an excellent home defense weapon. Short, light, and as powerful as a 30-30. A weapon that can shoot through sheetrock is your friend.

Then the vast majority of guns are your friend but i'm failing to see sheetrock penetration as an advantage. The whole point of HD round selection is minimizing barrier penetration to reduce the likelihood of impacting family members and/or neighbors. Certainly you are not advocating blindly shooting through walls.

7.62x39 soft points are more effective than they have any right to be. M67 ball ammo is also pretty dang good. This is a picture of what 7.62x39 FMJ does to a hog.

It looks dead enough to me.

I'm probably a maverick, but I consider overpenetration to be an overrated risk. Misses are much more dangerous to bystanders. The odds of a bullet going through your foe and hitting somebody else and then killing them are extremely slim; you've got a better chance of living to 100 years of age. If you are really worried about overpenetration leading to collateral damage, then do something to reduce or nullify the risk of it happening. Set up predetermined lanes of fire where there is a minimal chance of anyone being in that direction. Ideally, this means camping the top of a staircase so that all rounds fired are ultimately going into the ground. Don't rely on magic bullet designs for this because reduced penetration also implies reduced lethality against all targets.
