I'd be all for extending this match into January. As to whether I can get out to shoot it still remains to be seen. As long as someone breaks a trail back to the range with a snowmobile or a 4x4, I can walk to it.

Done...

Match Extended One Additional Week! All submissions are now due by January 7th, 2010.

There are a couple people that have expressed interest in shooting, but haven't had the time, what say everyone about extending the match 1 additional month (thus making it a New Years Resolution match)?

Here's an idea, have a January match for the procrastinators.:neener:

Eh, lets give em a shot this month...will make it an additional week and still have a January match...fair enough?

I'll Play

Went out this morning, cloudy, 40 degrees F, wind blowing left to right across the range about 10-15 MPH.

It took me probably 30 minutes to shoot the twenty four shots, I had to stop and rest, let my arms get some blood back in them. Whoever thought of shooting the "sporting group" unsupported has some kind of evil intent. I was out about three and a half hours shooting four pages of targets. Also, as I had my cheek weld, took a breath and let half out, I'd have to wait three seconds to let my glasses un-fog. Fun, fun, fun.

Anyhow, the rifle is a 2006 Marlin Golden 39A with a Skinner peep sight. I was using both Federal value pack 550, and Federal Lightning High Velocity. The target that was the best of the four, the third one shot, was using Federal Lightning, 40 grain. I was having problems keeping track of what row I was on, twice on my best target I shot the wrong star.

The way I scored it, I got a 20 out of 48. Not bad for me at all. My main shooting is steel targets about 8-12" diameter at 50 yards, the ping sound is music to my ears.

Jag, I concur with your score, and you are free to leave the post...no need to PM it directly to me unless you just want to.
Fun, fun, fun.
Glad you enjoyed it.

That is impressive shooting...I tried it (and shots went everywhere) and soon discovered why everyone is shooting the magnified optics target this month...oops.

:)

I put the picture of my target back up.

My arms are sore this evening from holding up the rifle. I was sitting at a bench, and would pick it up, get my aim, fire, and put it back down. Sometimes I would aim, re-aim, check the star I was shooting, re-aim, re-check, then put it down without pulling the trigger. I'm glad no one else was at the range, I felt silly at times. :scrutiny:

My other three targets scored: 1) Federal Bulk - 13; 2) Federal Bulk - 10; and 4) Federal Lightning - 16. The one I kept, number 3, was by far the best of the bunch. The only one that I didn't shoot at least one wrong star was number 1, but that didn't seem to help any.

The Skinner peep has a removable .096" diameter aperture, and Tim Skinner made a smaller one, .035" diameter for me when I bought the sight. I have since opened it up to .055" due to it being a bit too small, and this is the aperture I was using.

All in all it was fun, challenging, frustrating, and tiring. I think this is the hardest shooting I've done; even Army basic training gave us a supported firing positions. :p

Don't feel bad...everyone else thinks you are too. :neener: I had to do the same thing...until I got tired of it...I then proceeded to make one big hole in the center.

Glad to hear it...it ceases being fun when it isn't challenging...at least for me. I think I went a little too far with the stars though.

:)

I knew that target would be challenging thats why I suggested it, if it was easy anyone could ace it:)
I dont have acess to a indoor range and with the temps in the low 20's and teens I just havent made it to the range to shoot
Good job guys

I'm starting to have withdraws not getting to the range. The extended forecast doesnt look good :( butI will try and get out. Dont mind the cold as much as the cold and wind together.
Supposed to be a low of 10 tomorrow:eek:

Thought I'd missed out! Wish I'd checked in sooner. It's in the 20s today and headed for the teens for the next few weeks... Haven't been able to get out and the indoor range nearby isn't a good venue for shooting these targets.

Was going to go to the range tomorrow or Sunday regardless of weather, so this is good.

Stuck star target on the wall at one end of the basement - about 25 feet - and boy those stars look small!! Think I'll be sitting in the snow tomorrow, swaying in the wind... cussin' and getting a cold azz... Should be fun!

7 degrees doesn't sound too bad, but it sure is cold here (about 25 degrees this morning). :uhoh:

Wussed-out Saturday and 7 degrees here this morning... so went out this afternoon!:D

Too darn cold to shoot as much as I'd hoped, but did get one target with the .17 HMR and will scan in the a.m.

Guessing 15 - 20 mph cross wind... did I say cold!! Broke a plastic snap cap and couldn't clear it out at the range and so couldn't shoot peep-sighted limited target rifle. Attempt at the star target standing in Sporter was pretty pathetic! Thought about sitting, but was getting cooold out there!! Couldn't feel fingers loading mags. Still good fun!

Mav: You guys in the Carolinas don't know (or don't remember if you ever lived here) the joys of trying to shoot in the Midwest in winter. It was minus 13 degrees yesterday morning and forecast for below zero at night for the next week. I know the Finns shot at the Russians in this kind of weather back in the Winter War, but it's too cold for me to fondle a metal and fiberglass machine outside. I wanted to try the optics division again with a Marlin 982 .22 mag, butmaybe in March.

You are absolutely right, and I aim to keep it that way. :D

Don't feel bad the German's couldn't handle it either.

:)

Well here ya go

Savage .17 HMR, heavy barrel, Rifle Basix, Sightron 4.5 - 12 0r 16??, 17 grain TnT. From the bench - admittedly wus.

Let's see... a week extension makes Thursday the last day if I'm counting correctly so... might try and get out again of playing hookey works out. Un-fubared the other rifle and would like to give it another go. We'll see...

My hat's off to everyone shooting the stars!! Gotta be hard to keep those little guys straight and know which to shoot AT!!! LOL! For me anyway - front sight blade blots them out. Figure circle peep front might be a bit better. Far as I'm concerned - thank goodness for scopes!

Went to the range today to play with my pistol and got lucky. I shot 4 times with the rifle and all were around 50-65 points. The first one however (went down after that) was a 93 pointer (I think - someone will have to verify the score for me).

Robert McElwee
Ruger 10/22 with scope and bipod
1/4/10 - 50 feet - 93 points
