"Why do you think you need to carry a gun around here?" (Small town, rural area.)

"Because a person with a knife can kill me in 10 seconds and the police take 7 minutes to 2 hours to show up."

Responses

All good responses. Here is one I have used.

"You have guns ? Guns kill people"

No, people kill people. Guns are inanimate objects manipulated by, and subject to the whim of the user. By the way, our nation was founded by a bunch of people with guns.

"You don't need to be armed here. How often do you think people get killed out here, anyway?"

"Once."

definatly not the high road, but also definatly the funniest comeback i've ever heard.

Don't remember where I saw this one:

"I carry a gun because I'm too old to fight. A young guy might kick your ass. An old man will kill you."

A real post from http://4forums.com:

":) hi!
We are 2 dutch students and we dont get why almost everybody here want's a gun. In the Netherlands having a gun is a crime. And we think thats really good, cause you see the results in the US. Kids killing each other with daddy's gun, and we think that when you own a gun the proberbility to use it is always much closer then when you don't own a gun.
A lot of people feel safer when they have got a gun in their home, cause then you always can use it, even when you are drunk or something like that. And you are always thinking about: "when should i use my gun".
So. people don't buy a gun! what's the use?!
Just make sure that you do'nt get in any problems.
Greets,

Thoughts?

There are two things I cannot stand.

People who are intolerant of other's cultures.

And the Dutch.

A real post from http://4forums.com: "hi! We are 2 dutch students [. . .]

The neglegence of a few isn't worth outlawing our right to arm ourselves. No matter what land you live in, your safety and well-being are your own responsibility; there will always be times when someone can take advantage of you, and nobody can save you but yourself.

Just make sure that you do'nt get in any problems.

Always.

I guess they're right, the proberbility of me using one of my guns is higher than if I didn't own them. Heck, I used 3 of them yesterday at the range. I proberbly wouldn't have done that if I didn't own them.

Edit to add, this was written after I recovered from reading Prince Yamato and IndianaBoy's posts

I think those two Dutch kids located a couple of truths through the haze of marijuana smoke and misapplied them.

Yeah, I used a couple of my guns out back of my house just this afternoon. I wouldn't have either if I didn't own them.

two kids from Nijmegen...

maybe they think the 82nd Airborne will drop by again the next time they wind up in trouble.

A conversation I witnessed went something like this:

Person #1: "You gun-lovers and your weapons are a danger to society. I wish you would get the hell out and start a country of your own!"

Person #2: "We did! Who the f*** let you in!?"

I was laughing so hard that the Coca-Cola I was drinking came out of my nose. :D

I had handed my card to a co-worker which said "Firearms Safety Instruction" at the top. Another co-worker peaks over the card and says "OH! I am totally against that" I said "Which Safety or Instruction?" She left in a huff and reported to a supervisor that I was being disrespectful to her.

What are the odds?

The odds of you being a violent crime victim are pretty remote. What do you think the odds are of it happening to you?

I reckon about the same as it is for all those it happens to even though the odds were that it wouldn't.

Had this ol' codger walk into the store and upon seeing the wall of balck eveil rifles, ask if we had any hunting guns.

I turned looked at the wall and turned back to reply, "Sir, these are all hunting guns."

"I meant for hunting animals."

I gave him a faked look of horror and said "Sir, I do not believe in hunting animals, they are wonderful things. But I do believe in shooting bad people, thats what these are for!"

He paused long enough for me to laugh and then point him in the direction of the hunting guns on the wall he could not see from where he was.

I use the same type of reply with the antis. Disarming and comical whenever I can. They usually drop their guard long enough to get in a serious and insightful comment. If not, ignore them.

Anti-gun person:"Guns create crime"

Me: "Have a look at Switzerland^"

Anti-gun person: *Gives a blank look to try to link guns in Switzerland to high crime rate and fails to make this connection.*

^Switzerland had a homicide rate per 100,000 of 1.2 average over the years 1999-2001

^in 2001 the homicide rate for the United States of America was 5.91 per 100,000

Considering a large majority of households have automatic weapons.

Pro gun control person: "Guns kill people, they should be banned."
Me:"Do you talk on your cellphone while you drive?"
Pro gun control person:"mmm.....sometimes."
Me:"You have a higher chance of killing someone doing that than me with a gun. I don't see you getting banned on the road."

What do you think the odds are of it happening to you?
Here it's about midnight in a slightly upscale suburb. There was a gunshot a few minutes ago. No other noise, no screams, no sirens, just a single faraway yet unmistakable gunshot.
Yeah. Odds.

I reckon about the same as it is for all those it happens to even though the odds were that it wouldn't.
Yup. As I have been pointing out increasingly often: statistics don't mean anything when they happen to you.

How about responding with: "Do you want to go shooting? I'll pay for the ammo and the range time."

I do not get into that many FTF discussions about guns but if I do, I think I'll try the above response first and see what happens.

Sure there is a 90% + chance of being turned down but what if the person is just afraid? Maybe deep down he intrigued by the idea of firing a gun but has no idea of how to go about it.

It might cost me about $20-$30 but it would be so worth it to bring somebody over to the right side.

This, I think, would be a heck of a better opening gambit than my last post in this thread would be.

Them: Why do you own a gun?

Me: Hunting, personal protection, second amendment, target shooting, clay shooting, and I find disassembling and cleaning guns very therapeutic. If people like me did not own guns, people like you wouldn’t be living in a free country.

Antis forgot how this country was formed

What are you compensating for with that gun?

A: Umm, cops don't just materialize when you need them, it takes time, this gun will help me see to it that I'm around when they do....finally...arrive.

A: All you anti dummies who forget how this country was founded, and why.

A: If I was compensating for something, this would be a 500 S&W sweety.

A: Your ignorance regarding a 105lb woman being attacked by a 200+ lb man.

A: recoil

A: When the guy brings the AK into McDonald's to kill everyone, I can effectively protest his actions. But if it's full of a bunch of antis like yourself, I suppose I'll just leave and let you guys "talk him down."

A: (not hypothetical, this is true) I have a friend who was shot (and lived) by a disgruntled coworker, I have family friends who had their son shot by a landowner (he was killed), and an aunt that called in sick (thankfully) the night some ex-vietnam vet went off the deep end and massacred half the people in the bar in Klamath Falls in the 70's. How many more people close to me need to have negative encounters with guns before I go get one to protect myself should my turn come around?

A: Zombies pick people with guns last.;)

AHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Wow, that really got me tickled.

"why do you have a gun?"

1) "because the bad guys have them."
2) "to help people"

"Because some day when you're in the mall, and some tango who just took too many free cheese samples from the Hickory Farms store goes after your son's virginity, I'll spring into action..."

(sadly, most anti types wouldn't understand the Mall Ninja context)

I've used these in the past:

Them: Private ownership of guns should be banned. That's why we have police.
Me: We have firefighters too. Do you also think fire extinguishers should be banned?

Me: What should you do if someone breaks into your home?
Them: Give them what they want. Wait until they leave. Then call the ploice.
Me: What if 'what they want' is to rape your daughter?

There's a reason the Second Amendment was put second.
