Mav,
This Savage Mark II had a really atrocious trigger pull which was why I really had trouble keeping everything inside the black on those 1/2" dots, so I started looking for a solution to that problem. The original pull (that I shot the match with) was just shy of 8 pounds. No overtravel and it broke clean, just heavy.
Found a thread in the Savage forum over on rimfirecentral.com with instructions on how to do a trigger job on the non-accutrigger Mark II.
Took the trigger/sear assembly out and snipped 2 coils off the return spring, polished the sear engagement surfaces (sear AND striker) to a mirror finish with jeweler's rouge and put an .025 brass shim under the rear mounting screw when I reassembled it. Now it breaks like glass (still with no overtravel) at 3.0 pounds even. Of course, I thumped the butt of the stock on the floor a number of times with it cocked to make sure it wouldn't slamfire and it's still totally safe.
Dang, I love it when a plan comes together. My Eley ammo will be here Monday, and I'm gonna do another range trip either Monday or Tuesday. Think I'll try that "Candle Flame" target with it just for giggles. No need to re-shoot the match target this month I don't think unless I just wanna get them 3 holes in the 1/2" dots closer to the center
