What do you consider to be the perfect "truck gun"?

Henry USAF/AR7 .22LR, Skorpian .32.....

I toyed with the idea of packing away a Henry USAF "survival" .22LR for natural disasters or "bug out" events :uhoh: . I have worked in 2 major storm recovery events & went thru 2 hurricanes so I know these situations are no joke.
I've seen the sale prices go up & down on these rifles so Im not in a huge rush.

For a vehicle you could try to snag a Warsaw Pact era Skorpian full auto machine pistol. :D
Those nasty buggers were very popular in Eastern Europe in the 1970s/1980s/1990s. A few machine pistols in .32 were used by Viet Cong assassins in Saigon during the SE Asia conflict. Armed VC would zip up to military vehicles or targets, drill them then zoom off in the crowded streets. :uhoh:

An SKS meets all over your requirements, and is to me the empitomy of a truck gun.

-Super reliable
-Powerful
-Accurate to 300 yards or better
-10 shot stripper clip fed semi auto nothing to sneeze at
-Pretty compact
-Inexepensive gun AND ammo!
-Ammo can be found at Wal-Mart or anywhere else for cheap

See what I mean? I LOVE the SKS rifle!

Picked up a Savage Axis .270 from a buddy (cheap) who was going thru some tough times... planned to hold on to it until he was able to buy it back at the same price. Long story short, he didn't want it back.

Had the barrel cut to 18" and crowned and it gets tossed behind the seat of my truck every morning. It's more of a "what's that coyote doing up behind the barn" vs. two legged critter protection. Truck/trunk gun ideals seem to change depending on the population density of where you call home I suppose....

I'd say an M2, but the bigger question is: Why are you out hunting trucks? :D

Well, I think your little brother is close to the money. :D My 35 Remington is the 1st cousin of the 30-30 and is my second choice. I've had my 35 Rem since 1977, longer then any other gun.

It's a keeper.

Truck Gun?

I agree about the SKS.:D

The only other gun I might compare it to as a truck gun would be a lever action 30-30.

I carried the SKS, my little brother carried the 30-30. We always fought over which was best.
As I have said earlier, no legal loaded long guns in my area.
But if I could, a 12 gauge pump is my 1st choice.:)
If we're talking rifle, the SKS.:D

Somebody asked, "Why are we hunting trucks"?
What do you have against them? And they taste awful!:neener:

An AK pistol? Realistically, since I don't like wheelguns, and would want something that hits hard, I would probably go for a Glock 20. If you like wheelguns, your options open up quite a bit.

And an M2 way overkill for some trucks. My 84 Ranger weighs less than my 92 Accord did...

A few notes on the tangential considerations offered here:

I don't think anyone is promoting the idea that one stop and dismount to engage in a fight. The problem is that if you find yourself in a fight while your vehicle is stopped, disabled, blocked or you are otherwise unable to quickly get it moving, it might be handy to have a long gun quickly accessible. Alternatively, in the case of riots/zombies/rabid unicorns you may decide to shelter in place, wherever that is. Another scenario is that in which you decide it is vital that you make it to your loved ones, despite having to travel on foot. This is obviously extremely dangerous but it's at least plausible. One can argue the merits of being visibly armed (deterrence vs. attractive target) but some folks might wish to bring the rifle along.

If you can't secure the vehicle, a weapon shouldn't be left in it. We all agree there. This discussion presumes that people garage their vehicle or remove the weapon from it when it can't be secured.

The idea that theft is a more probable event is a flawed one because it doesn't represent a proper risk analysis. Theft might be more likely if reasonable steps aren't taken but the probability of an event isn't the only factor in a risk analysis. A proper risk analysis weighs probability of an event versus the severity of the damage versus cost to mitigate. In this case, the likelihood of needing the rifle is very low but the severity of the damage in the case of needing it and not having it is extremely high. The probability of theft is low but not as low as the probability of needing the rifle. However, the cost of the theft is mainly monetary.

As was mentioned, a Winchester 94 trapper in 44 Mag. is a perfect 'truck gun'. But I always carry a underfolder Wasr AK47 which is short, 30 rounds, and is hard hitting. That is all you need for a truck gun.

Right now I have a model 65 loaded with 158gr LSWCHP bullets and 24 spares. I also have a Glenfield model 75 (think model 60 with a 16" barrel) that I bought out of the paper for $50 in my truck.

I am thinking about swapping the model 65 for a Sigma 9VE. I have never had a stoppage or any miscue with this gun even though lots of people bad mouth this firearm.

It would be really easy to make you stop, with just some sticks and nails, or by piling brush /logs/stones on the road.

So why do cops have such a hard time stopping cars on these long car chases you see on the news almost every day? Why don't they just put some sticks and nails in the road, or pile some brush/logs/stones in front of the car they're chasing?

I've personally driven for literally weeks with nails in my tires, and found it pretty easy to turn down other roads if there's anything piled in the road ahead of me. And that's not even TRYING to get away from anything!

So for a truck gun I would say any cheap revolver in say 357 or a Hi Point in 9MM or above. If a long gun was needed the SKS or the beat to crap WIN 30-30 would fit the ticket. Incidentally I own all of these and sometimes use them as truck guns as well. The SKS and 30-30 are not legally able to be carried loaded in a vehicle in Maine but a butt stock ammo band is almost as handy if you practice loading them fast enough.;) I would not cry if any of the above disappeared in a break in. They are big enough to do the needed job IMHO.

C'mon kids, everybody knows the "best" truck gun is a .50 cal M2 on a pintle mount. Nothing else even comes close.

My criteria
-must be something I won't cry over if its lost or stolen

Your criteria (and your thought process) is fundamentally flawed.

Leaving a firearm accessible to one and all, and stating that you don't care if someone else steals and uses it for whatever means...displays a serious lack of understanding of the tenets of responsibility on your part.

Yeah, I get that if someone breaks into your car/truck and steals your gun, then he bears that responsibility (and should be imprisoned accordingly).

But your "I don't give a fork" attitude is a seriously contributing factor.

Think about that, long and hard. Because a jury will. Especially since you have been so good as to memorialize it on the web, where everyone can see it.

And in the future, think before you post. :)
