2009 New Years Eve Rimfire Match

I'll have some time to shoot after Christmas if the weather isn't too bad.
If not let me know, the match can be extended as necessary, if there are scheduling/weather conflicts.

:)

Why is the 17 unlimited? I have a bottom of the line Savage that shoots good, but in no way is it even close to unlimited. With the way you set up the rules, an NEF with open sights and 17HMR/17HM2 is in a tougher class than a 10/22 with a $200 trigger, $300 barrel and 50x scope. Not only that, it is much easier to get a 22lr to shoot good just by changing to quality ammo when the 17 does not have an ammo option. At 50 feet the 22 has a distinct advantage in accuracy over the 17.

Saying the 17's are inherently accurate is incorrect. Most 22's will out shoot 17's up to 50 yards just by changing the ammo. I have never also seen any 17 win or even place at any sanctioned or non sanctioned shooting event. Although some are so behind the times they will not allow them.

Just curious as to what the reasoning is behind making $200 Savage or Marlin with a crappy stock and crappy trigger that only shoots hunting ammo unlimited class but a $1,000+ Anschutz or Cooper that can shoot $50 a box match ammo is considered sporting class.

Why is the 17 unlimited?
Because people complained that the .17cals were too good to be grouped with the lowly .22cals. How do you suggest we organize it next month (preferably keeping as few of categories as possible)? Honestly I don't have enough trigger time behind any .17s (have played with several and just recently built a 10/17) to be a great judge of classes. I just want it to be as fair as possible, and keep everyone happy and shooting. :)

Mav:

OK. Here it is. The ink numbers were my first score and the lighter pencil numbers were using your scoring.

purchawk, that is nothing to be ashamed of, not a single shot outside of the "4-ring", for a score of 71, so you still passed. ;)

Mav:

Thanks for scoring. I think you are correct that too many ties would result from using traditional NRA scoring, but I am so used to it from bullseye pistol competition and 100 yd smallbore competition that I just assumed you were using it.

I doubt I can get to the 50 foot indoor range before the end of the year. We just had 16 inches of snow with 50 mph winds, and since no one plows the rural lane to the indoor range, prospects look dim.

So what is the problem, back in my day we used to walk 10mi. in the snow, uphill both ways to get to the indoor range. ;)

Mav:

Oh, yeah? When I was a kid we walked 20 miles, uphill both ways, through 10-foot snow drifts, with coyotes chasing us--and that was just so we could go to school and in order to play hookey! We were really tough little kids, I tell ya.

P5D1: Many thanks for the encouragement. I guess it wasn't too bad for a stock, out-of-the box Ruger 10/22 and Remington hollow-point bulk ammo (which the gun seems to like). I just started shooting again last year after 50 years away, so I'm really enjoying the sport. Lots of great guys in my local club, but it's competition is shut down for the winter (despite what Mav might think of us) and my social life has taken a hit. I liked your score a lot.

Sounds like the local club needs to toughen up too...but we're here for ya'. :D

Maverick-
I think its fine the way it is. My comment was for the poster who didnt like the class the 17's were put in

Naw, you just punch holes where you don't see any, works fine as long as you don't miss. :D

Nice rifles and submission MP-510...look forward to photos.

:)

Oh, this looks like fun. I'll admit, the scoring has me confused though. So, I'll shoot'em and let you score'em ;).

I do have a few questions. I have a rock stock Russian Vostok CM2 with a scope. This is a target class rifle so I would class this as a limited, correct?
Do I have a limitation on magnification in this class?
And if so, what?

Great idea.
I have participated in postals before, but this will be my first web match.

Honestly I would classify it as "Unlimited" because it was built from the ground up as a target gun. Magnification is unlimited in either target class, but that does bring about a good point...what is "high magnification", I would say that anything over 10x is, but that is debatable. That is something that needs to be clarified in the next match.

:)

so 17's are not aloud?....i shoott a 10/17.....oh well i have to get the 22lr pump with open sights to play....
Yes they are, we are just discussing how to classify them in the match next month. They are currently classified as "Unlimited Target". Glad to have another .17cal shooter on board...I too shoot a 10/17 (you show me yours and I'll show you mine :D). Welcome to the match.

:)

looks like we have the same taste in scope's and barrel's
My bbl is E. R. Shaw (don't know who makes the barrels for E. A. Brown Co.), but the scope is a WW special 4-16x CenterPoint (which appears to be the same as yours).

[sweet] 10/17
Thanks...unless you really meant "sweat", in which case I may need to wipe it down. :neener: I like your folder, and had one on my 10/22 before the conversion, great for backpacking. I pulled mine off when I decided to make it into a target rig to get something that fit a little better (Fajen Legacy).

:)
