Gun terms that get misused or misspelled

I am not much bothered by variations in pronunciation of words that were likely imported from some foreign language, but made up cuteisms do get up my nose.

I also b'leeve in a decimal clock with ten hour days.

I went 'round and 'round with Michael Z. Williamson over his 10 div - 100 seg - 100 sec day on the planet Grainne with 27+ hour Earth Standard day. I said that came out with a slightly different second vs Earth Standard and would lead to error in physical constants and implementations like radio frequency. He said "the computers would take care of the conversions."
I think what it did was
1. Let the Freehold of Grainne sound logical and
2. pad the word count as he repeatedly reminded Terrans what time it was.

Perhaps the most irritating to me or odd ask the Cub terms is auricular that happens while I'm saying on my phone. It'll come up with words that I have absolutely no clue about, to.

I swear sobering my Pogue even changes the dorky after I have taken the time to proofread Neha clickers "Post Reply".

I Cai got "Post Reply" then later when I read my own comment have absolutely no idea what words i was trying to use in many instances.

It's no more difficult than converting weights to masses on different planetary bodies. The mass, in whatever units, is constant, whereas the weight depends on gravity's acceleration.

I'm constantly annoyed when Wiki confuses weight with mass, especially when I see things like "the mass of the .45 ACP bullet is 230 grains."

Nope, that's the weight. Which just happens, here on earth, to be the same numerical value as the mass.

On the moon, the weight would be about 38 grains. But the mass, the amount of matter in that bullet, would be the same (230) in earth grains.

So while the weight is the same as the mass here on earth, I object to their cavalier mixing of the two concepts by an institution which holds itself out as the paragon of precision.

True, but while there is recognition of a Pound Mass, if you want to do calculations in consistent English units, you have to get the mass in Slugs. 32.2 lb(m) = 1 slug.

There is also the convenience factor in the French System. Sometimes you will see a European catalog with trigger pulls in the technically correct Newtons but sometimes in Kilograms, kind of backwards to our conventions by using a mass to express force.

One advantage of the true Imperial system is that in England when you order a pint of beer, you get 20 fluid ounces instead of 16 and the ounces are bigger to begin with.

I was born in and grew up around Lamesa, TX which is the county seat and rode many a school bus mile to and from the schools there. It is spelled like I just did and pronounced luh-mee-saa, one word, not two. I one mentioned the town a during a conversation with my wife's older sister and later she asked my wife if I didn't realise it was pronounced laa maa-saa. My wife told her I grew up there and she had been there many times and it was pronounced by everyone just like I did. End of conversation. Conclusion: don't tell a resident how to pronounce local names. The only time I ever heard it pronounced with the Spanish form was on the "Dallas" TV show. They had the sheriff's cars down to a tee and the same with the location but the script writers didn't go far enough with their research.

During my time living there I never heard of any term for a handgun of any type used except "pistol" and it was always "clip", never "magazine". Every country boy like me that I knew of and quite a few of the city boys had a 22 rifle. All we country "hicks" had to do was walk out the door to go hunting.

Questions?

Yes.

Did the break happen because the brake was broken or because the brake broke?

If the brake was broken, that implies the break happened because the brake was broke before the event which caused the break.

But if the brake broke under load, then that implies something about the brake failed during the event itself which then caused the break.

The broken barrel could also have happened without any break to the break, though, such as an incorrectly sized brake integrated to the barrel which could conceivably break the barrel when fired.

Looks like an illegal conversion to an SBR to me.

Actually, it looks kinda like when one of those 20 gauge shells got stuck in the choke of a shotgun and a 12-er was then fired. Saw those results once, not the actual accident. (This may have been long before they made all 20 gauge shells yellow.)
