The monthly matches continue with April's "Barricade Shoot."

In this match only a front rest is allowed with no additional support allowed rear of the trigger as if shooting over your wagon's sideboards at hostile prairie dogs. You may however fire from any field position unsupported if you'd rather.

Rifle: ANY lever action repeating rimfire, including 22 Mag is allowed

The Target: http://www.reloadbench.com/pdf/files/pistol_target.pdf

Distance: 50 yards

Number of shots: 5

Scoring: Group size AND Distance from center of the most distant shot AND Average of both on the same target. The smallest wins.

Sights: Any, though separate categories will be used for Magnified (Scopes) and Un-Magnified sighting systems

Shoot as many targets as you want and send in your best one. If you shoot a better one you may upgrade as long as it arrives before the deadline: April 30, 2008

Email or PM me for address to send targets too. My email is my forum name @hotmail.com Include the following information:

-Forum Name or name you wish to listed under
-Rifle and sights use
-Ammo
-position (ie: Barricade, sitting, John Wayne, etc)
-Range conditions

Side Match
Firearm: Any handgun in any caliber

Target: http://www.reloadbench.com/pdf/files/rifle_target.pdf

Distance: 25 feet

Number of shots: 3 per bullseye.

Scoring: Distance from Center to outermost shot in group AND average of the four bullseyes

Position: One handed, Wyatt Earp style.

Saddle up and get shootin' pards! Only four weekends in this month.

I shot this match yesterday. Like the Shamrock Shoot it is challenging. Dang fliers really mess up a good group!

I'm guessing most of us mortal types will come in around 2" for groupsize and about that for distance from center.

The handgun side match was tough too. Shooting one handed is more challenging than I thought. I did one target with my New Vaquero in 45 Colt and two with my Ruger Single Six. JohnMcl might clean up on us if one of you guys doesn't step up.

I was asked to clarify the scoring so I'll give it a shot (pun intended)

Each target is scored for group size. There will be one winner for that. The same target is also scored for distance from the center of the bullseye to the center of the outermost shot and there will be a winner for that. The two scores will be averaged and there will be a winner for that too.

So say you shoot a tiny MalH style group but it's on the outer white ring. You might win the smallest group event but come in last on the distance from center event and end up mid pack in the average category.

You might also have a 2" group that centers perfectly on the bullseye that yields a 1" using the center scoring. You might win the center event, finish mid pack in the group size and do pretty well in the average...

Best of luck!

I so hope to shoot this.

Business is still eating my lunch. (I've almost got April rent covered...:uhoh:).

Weather is improving. Surely I can get to the range for this one.

I so hope to shoot this one.

Hey 39 club members, this should light a fire under ya... the current leader and the first to submit a sub 1" score in the April Match is shooting a HENRY!

Today was too nice to pass up a try at the targets down in the woods.

In the spirit of the "barricade shoot" theme, I put up a small barricade to shoot behind (ok, it was 4 logs on end, see pic below). I even used an authentic John Wayne circle-the-wagons style blue nylon tarp to lie on in the prone position. ;)

I certainly hope that 1" group by the Henry shooter was using a scope! If not, I have no way of even showing up in the list. I shot two targets, the second was better than the first, but neither are anything to write home about.

For the bonus round, I used my S&W 17 because I wanted to use a .22 as we had discussed before. It's been awhile since I shot Bullseye style - the muscles don't cooperate like they used to!

Oh great! Thanks a lot for taking away my well thought out excuse for lousy targets with some biological mumbo jumbo! Besides I exercise plenty. I must pick up the remote over 100 times a day. Well! It's a heavy remote, has functions for 4 different devices!

(I also just felled and sawed up a huge oak tree one day before shooting. That should have used enough adenosine triphosphate to sink a ... sink.)

Yup, SP's Henry Octagon was Scoped and he used CCI Blazer ammo. Very impressive.

Mal, your targets have arrived.

So far every entry has also submitted a bonus/side match target and two of those with multiple firearms. :D Two hands, two guns :p

confession

i have to fess up--i shot the sub-1" group while sitting/barricade (front rest). felt guilty so tried it again standing with a real barricade. results more realistic--1.5" group, 1" from center, 1.25 average. so you guys who really know how to shoot can relax. i'll send the target to the host today.

Hi Dr. Twig
A big welcome to the forum, levers, and especially the match. Checking what few rules we have (helps us semi-litrutes;), you are allowed a front or barricade rest. 1st target should count. Now Mo will have a humdinger in the John Wayne style and at 50yds yet. Dang that is some shootin'. Would say that Henry sure is a shooter but reminds me of a story. An artist was visiting a photographer aquaintance and commented on his work. "You must have some really expensive and top end equipment to get that kind of results." On another day they were at the artist's studio and the photographer was looking at the many pieces of work hanging in the gallery. " You must use very expensive brushes and paint to get these works of art on canvas". Never forgot that.:D

I may have to wait till next month. Nemo sounds like me... too much work going on to have a life. Yuk.

Besides that the squirrels in my backyard have appeared to determine the effective killing range of these Aguila Super Colibri's, and they play around just beyond that distance. :banghead: Grrrr...!!!

So, in short, I'm going short. Meaning, I'm going back to real gunpowder. Hoping .22 shorts will deflate their smugness, pronto... but that means re-zeroing the scope for *real* bullets. And that means finding the time to get my sorry self to the range.

Oh well, enough grousing. Ya don't make new friends by complaining, so in fact... Life Is Good! :)

Hi sadlsor
Welcome to the rimfire postal thread. Been following your posts in 39 thread. I am sure that I am one of many that would trade in a heart beat the chance to sit on my back stoop and pop those bushys the way you are instead of paper . Why bother with the range? Any good what-knot in the yard (non-ricochet expendable type) should do as long as you can see where the bullet hits.;) These postals are mostly for us folk that can't have what you got.:D Keep us posted on your safari ventures over in the 39 thread. And don't forget pictures!!!

What - you want pictures of dead rats? Or, do you mean pictures of my 39A?

In actuality, neither subject is particular photogenic. No, it's not blasphemy... really. The Marlin used to look like a darlin'... but life happened.

Short version: I was on sub duty, doing my time for Uncle Sam on a fast-attack boat. We were out at sea for about 2 weeks, and one of the chef-types (been debriefed so long, I don't even remember the billet), or cooks, stayed behind for some school. Well, he didn't just study and learn, he went out and got *****-faced, and somebody poured him back into the barracks one night. He apparently fell asleep in the shower, passed out while his larg-ish plump behind covered the drain. We never had flooding on the boat, but this dude flooded the entire barracks, including my room where the Marlin stood in a soft case in the closet. The case soaked up water and it remained in standing water for days, and when it dried out the buttstock was water-stained. The metal and bluing didn't rust; the water wasn't that deep.

I haven't got around to re-finishing it because:
1. Doesn't affect the shoot-ability, and
2. Now that I'm ackshully using it, I shoot nearly every day, so I don't want it out of commission if that big fat tree rat shows up outside.

The good news is, after re-zeroing my scope for .22 shorts yesterday (took about 18 bullets), I killed my first chipmunk today. Missed the first shot, but the fool sat still trying to decide where the danger was coming from, so I corrected and nailed him on the 2nd try. About 50 feet out.

The Colibri would have thumped him, probably fatally, but the 'munk would have still been able to crawl off to die. I cleaned him shoulder to shoulder, so he barely had time to quiver before he expired. And the shorts are not as loud as I had feared.

And I could post a picture of a dead squirrel OR my water-stained .22 - just want to be sure I give you what you want!

Pictures

Hi sadlsor
Never tire of pictures of 39A's. That's just a story for your later years. Can't wait to hear it in another 5 years or so. Guess you can keep the rats. And always try to take a moment to thank those who have served. Was a sonarman in CG in '60s. Was asked if we had subs and said yep, HAD two in 'Frisco with screen doors. Spent couple days on conventional subs during training in Key West (during Cuban Crisis) no thanks! Great admiration for you silent service people. With the .22 shorts should be able to lob them like a howitzer at 50yds.

One of Those Days

Hi All,
Went to the County range (25miles each way) and wanted to do rimfire and centerfire. Had put scopes on both 39a and 336 since last out after trying aperature sites. Holes no where to be found with either rifle. Finally had to use dirt to mark bullets to walk them in to zero in scopes. Still fun tho. Trying prvi partizan in 30-30. If like some people would brand it trash since didn't seem very accurate in Calamilty, yet. But think we all haven't got on the same page as at times showed potential. The 39A, SweetLips, couldn't seem to settle in either. Maybe was a bit prissy because I shot Calamity first. Anyway I finally did decide that sitting there popping off one shot every 20 seconds or so was not what a lever was meant to do. SOOOO, Back to the peeps (Skinner on Sweet Lips, Williams on Calamity) and we will have more fun the way the first American Assault Rifle was meant to be used, ALA Winchester 73. Never saw Hollywood do a better job of presenting a firearm. Lot of good basic tactics in the end too. James Stewart was awesome in his usual outstanding way. Always liked him best in westerns.

It was bound to happen... Atop the leader board in the Magnified divisions is a Henry... :what: Yup both of Dr. Twigs entries, including his standing behind the barricade target put at the top.

Another surprise was the number of entries from other forums actually exceeded the number of shooters from THR.

On another note, I think (I'll have to double check) MalH and I were the ONLY non-magnified targets entered.

I still have some bonus match targets to score. I'll post the official results ASAP.

Ready for the next one...

OK, so it's the last day of the month. Meaning, tomorrow is the first day of... no, not that. The first day of the next Postal Match. I haven't read all 146 pages of this thread, but IIRC, it's paper targets mailed somewhere.

Might have seen the rules back on page 1... that could be a good place to start.

JustSayMo, how about if I PM you if I have any questions? I should be able to get something done to represent both THR and Marlin this go-round. Do we need witnesses? Do the targets have to be notarized?

(By the by, I have at least 4 confirmed chip-kills in the last 4 days, and added a squirrel within 30 seconds of today's chip-kill. I missed an easy 2nd chip 'cuz I was getting full of myself... tried for a headshot and missed completely. I'm liking the "real" .22s, even if they're short.)

Dude, you got that right.

Going into business for myself: what was I thinking?

Which means that Mal ran out of duct tape. :uhoh:

Send contributions to "Mal's Duct Tape Fund, c/o THR ..."

:D

Front row! Very cool!
[/Uecker]

We need to get more folks shooting the old 39's the way they were meant to be shot!

Thanks again for running the match, Mo. I promise I'm going to try for the centerfire match - probably tomorrow ... err, rather make that today.
