Marlin 39 Club - Postcard Match

I want to add my public thanks to Jaguar for running this. It was fun indeed.

If I had not taken last place with that scope setup, it would have shaken my faith in all the others in the magnified class!

As Jaguar probably read in my note attached to the target, there was some luck involved, but as Lee Trevino once said, it seems the more I practice, the luckier I get. (BTW, Jag wrote "bench" only. I was sitting at my bench, but the rifle was supported only with my left elbow on the bench, same as in the magnified class.)

I also just noticed that johnmcl and I are both in Northern VA. Just a coincidence, I assure you ... just a coincidence ......

Thank You Jag!!!

Thank you Jag for your idea, time and effort. It has been fun participating in and following this thread.

Congratulations to all that participated and to those that missed out I say :neener: you missed out on some good fun.

I'm already jazzed for the next one:D

What a perfect reason to get the 39A out of the safe and back into use

+1

Thanks, Jag - my Mountie enjoyed being let out for a while. I even fixed a couple things so she's in better shape now than before the match. Next time I'll get some cards in.

Well, we could do:

  • A's against M's
  • 50 yards (although non mags would have a tough time here)
  • and **GASP** 39's vs. 60's

And, yeah, if you guys have pics of your cards & wanna share 'em, let's see 'em.

Az, not only did you try, you also turned your cards in! I was too embarrassed.

(I claim windy conditions as my excuse. Shooting offhand in blustery conditions hard)

Reading the results and the good feelings that ensued made me feel good all over.
I smiled a lot while reading the last page of posts (since results were posted).

I regret that I wasn't able to participate, but that's a minor point that I intend to remedy on the next round of the competition, whether it's 39A v 39M, or 39 v 60, or 39 v 336, or 39 v slingshot, or ... whatever we come up with.

The main point is, this thread has been a LOT of fun, and contributed a LOT to our community.

Congrats to all the winners (...oh yeah, well let's see you repeat that success next time ... :p), and to all who participated.

Many thanks to Jag for conceiving the idea and following through with it so diligently.

Oh, and one more thing: Frank, let this be a lesson to you:
one can never legitimately claim last place until after the results are in! :neener:

AZ-Morgan, your position is not secure.

I WILL take last place in the next competition,
and no one can rob me of that esteemed position,
even if I have to shoot left handed with my eyes closed! :D

Some comments and observations.

First of all, you guys are some good shots. The two people who I could beat, one was shooting offhand, to which I must just say “excellent job,” and the other was using a scoped duct taped to his rifle, to which there is absolutely nothing I can say.

I would like to congratulate the winners, good shooting johnmcl and Mal H. Be expecting your mosquito in the near future. I will post a picture of the winning cards when time permits. I also want to thank everyone who participated in the match because without all of you this would not have been possible. I hope everyone had as much fun as I did.

I truly enjoyed cyber-meeting everyone involved but I must call out a couple of you. Frank has been a great asset to this match and I don’t think it would have been as fun without him. Kudos to you, Frank. Nematocyst also was a great help not only in this but he was the one who started the whole Marlin 39 Club, where I first started thinking about this match. Even though he didn’t get to shoot in the match, it wouldn’t have been possible with him. Kudos to you as well Nem.

Now for my only criticism; I think the match lasted too long. This lasted three months, but probably should only last one or two at the most. Having three months may have given ample time for more people to participate, but I think interest may have waned a bit between the start and the finish. Just something to think about for the next one. :D

~Jaguar

Jaguar - I agree with your time observations. We used to have postal matches here on THR a few years ago. They were every month. Unfortunately interest waned in them and participation fell off after around a year.

Maybe a one month or 6 week time period to get the shooting and mailing done. Have them every quarter or so. That should be infrequent enough to keep them fun and not turn into a chore.

Other thoughts on it?

Oh, and as far as I'm concerned, those who shot off-hand and got three shots on a 3X5 card - period - were winners. That's a far tougher task than propping your rifle on an elbow.

I'm up for more of these little games. I am glad that the last one was open for as long as it was because I only learned of in the last two weeks. If they were more frequent, that would not be a problem.

There seems to be a finite number of combinations we can mix to create competitions, so after a year we can just cycle back around and have the same games again.

Personally I enjoyed having an excuse to get better with my rifle. As long as we limit the prizes to small insects, I think only good can come from these.

Let's hear members' ideas for some other possible matches.

By the way, if we go out to 50 yards, I'm afraid I'm going to need to harvest a paper plate instead of just a mangy index card.

Thanks to all.... there's only up from here!

Az-Morgan

Just so you know, it is hard to measure "one ragged hole":banghead:

Thanks to Jaguar for making this happen. It was fun to shoot my friend's Marlins. Kudos to the winners, johnmcl and Mal H. And I am really impressed with Threadkiller, who beat me from the standing position! I need to practice more. . .

I must call out a couple of you.
They're calling us out, Frankie! :uhoh: Get'cher gun!

Frank has been a great asset to this match
Hear hear. Sir Bumpsalot helped keep the humor alive. The mosquito was a great stroke. (Or did it have a stroke?)

Nematocyst ... started the whole Marlin 39 Club
Shucks, twarn't nuthin. Just love of a fine, historic rifle. And I only started it.
So many have contributed much more knowledge. I just did it as a ploy to learn more.

Time frame? Quarterly sounds good. Yeah, I hope we keep them going.

Another thing I gleaned from the results is that JohnMCL's 39 was of recent (2006) vintage and performed very well in both categories with ammo commonly available and reasonably priced. I'm glad they are still makin' a quality product when the trend is to outsource and sacrifice quality.

It was interesting to see the percentage of Mounties that showed up for the shoot as fewer have been manufactured during the long proud history of the Marlin 39. No doubt that reflects the superiority of the version and its shooters :neener: ;) :p :D

I like the ideas floated so far and would love to see at least a quarterly match for 39s and even if that includes other 22 rimfire sporting rifles.

Again, thanks to Jag for taking the initiative and the brilliant format idea. Kudos too to Nem, FF and all the other THR participants that made this fly. Well done to all! :)

:) It was fun. Thanks to all for putting this on. I was going down to the range to blast with the 1911 and thought I'd throw the 39 in the truck to see what I could do.

Turns out that this old man can still see the sights well enough to make a group. :)

Like someone said earlier, I was tickled to be able to put three shots on the 3x5 card anywhere whilst shooting offhand. The receiver sight is the way to go for irons IMHO. I love my 39M! :)

And now, since today is my birthday, I'm going to celebrate by getting a root canal done. :(

Hope that doesn't mess with your cheek weld. :p

Happy Birthday, btw. Many more, eh? ;)
