Very classy mount, Mal.
You got yourself a classic there,
and made the duct tape lovers of the world proud.

I had to place the stock on the top of my shoulder in order to see anything through the scope.
We may want a pic of that new shooting technique, also.

Is anyone else shooting offhand? If Jag gives me my own category I can be first and last place.

Actually, Threadkiller shot his card offhand in the non-magnified class, and is probably not in last place. (I haven't scored his card yet but it looks good.)

Not sure how many of you remember my post about duct taping a scope to my 39 so I could enter the magnified class - Well I did it! (I'm sure Nem will be impressed! :))

Well, I remember that, but I didn't believe you . If you beat me (and Frank, we're tied you know) with that rig, one of two things will happen. Either I will give up shooting and sell all my guns, or I will redouble my ammo budget and learn how to shoot.

Hello!

I'm new here. About a month ago I picked up an old Mountie and love it much more than I expected. I decided I needed a .22 lever like I learned on for my daughter when she is ready to learn. I may have to get her her own!

Anyhoo, I shot a couple of cards this morning, so you can add me to the list.

Hey Jag,

It looks like I'm running out of time before my big business trip. I may try to sneak to the range on Wednesday but at this point don't plan on my being in the game.

I've gone to the range twice now with the index cards! Very frustrating that windless days and index cards haven't coincided. And I think I got my sling technique down, it was the across the wrist that I wasn't doing right.

:(

Thanks for your work on the match.

Competition does help my shooting, I'm glad I practiced for it. Now I need to play with my sling technique to see if I can use it without irritating my shoulder.

By this time of season, they're wary and skittish.

Even the crack of a twig from a quarter-mile away
will make them turn sideways (thus become invisible) and run.

An amazing adaptation to hunting pressure.

They were safe until this contest.

Now, they sense that they're bounty.

The life of a 3x5 will never be the same again.

I just sat and read that entire woof thread.

Should we start a similar flame war with the tricked-out-tactical-laminate-uber-carbon-no-original-parts 10/22 guys vs. the 100 year old unchanged rifle guys?

Weird. Too bad. Hope he comes back.

Way to go Bear!

I think I'm seeing 13 Iron sighters and 4 glass shooters.

Jag is sitting over there smugly knowing who the winner is and watching the rest of us chew our fingernails off in suspense.

Am I the only one to notice that there have been well over four thousand views of this thread?

I also noticed that Woof posted yesterday... He's not gone. C'mon Woof! There's still time!

I'm loving every minute of it!:D

Well, looks like I am out. Sorry I didn't get to participate.

I want to thank Jaguar for the follow-up PM about a week ago.

Good luck, everybody... and have a great Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving

The 3x5 season ended yesterday, and I am still waiting on a few entries. I want to thank everyone who participated by sending in cards and/or keeping this thread lively. I have had a lot of fun with this, it was a good excuse to get some trigger time, and I hope to do it again sometime. I did have reservations about giving my address out to people I don't know but you really won't find better people than firearms enthusiasts as a whole. Sure, there are some bad apples in most every group, but in this postcard match everyone has been great.

The last four people's cards should be here Friday or Saturday and I will post the results as soon as I get them scored. As far as the current standings...

Here are the entries I have:
JustsayMo*
Jaguar *~
RimFire45 *~
Fast Frank~
Sistema1927*
ArmedBear **
Mal H*~
KMBRTAC45*
Beetle Bailey **
BamBam-31*
ThreadKiller*
az-morgan *
DMK*
ChevellRCR~
johnmcl*~

Here are those I waiting on:
Bazooka Joe71

Here are those I don't know about:
woof (Last I saw, he was quitting the High Road due to an argument.)
Ithacaman (no word since post #14)
Black Majik (Last word was post #166 saying cards are ready to be sent in, and will post or PM when done. I haven't heard from him since.)
MikeS. (no word since post #94. And I was hoping this was Mike S. Adams, my favorite collumist at Town Hall.com)

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving. Please be safe this weekend and God bless you and yours.

Oh yeah, and GO DALLAS COWBOYS! :D

Jag, thanks for doing this.

It was a fun way to pass some time and I enjoyed losing it!:D

I'll be watching for the results.

Care to make any observations?

Did the long barrel rifles shoot smaller groups than the mounties?

Did the scoped rifles shoot smaller groups than the iron sights?

Did the young whippersnappers shoot smaller groups than the old farts?

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

To be posted soon.

Sure, I'll bite. Seems the M's, as a whole, did better than the A's. This is generalized but it seems that more M's are at the front of the pack.

The best scope did better than the best irons, but not by too much. If there had been no class distinction you would have seen scopes and irons intermixed fairly well.

I didn't ask for age, and no one supplied it. If it helps, I'm 42 and didn't do too well. Remember who you're tied with? ;)

Now THAT'S interesting.

I'll be very interested in exploring this some more (since I'm thinking about having my A barrel cut down ... assuming I ever see my A again ... still haven't made it to the shop to get it as he was closed for the week of T'giving.)

I found Jag's findings interesting too. We'll need to do another 3x5 shoot just for reasearch purposes. :D

I've own(ed) Marlin 39's in three barrel lengths, 16.5", 20" & 24".
-The 24" would consistently shoot the best with most ammo varieties.
-My 20" Mounties both shoot everything pretty well too though I haven't quite matched what my 39A could do.
-Interestingly enough the very best AND the very worst accuracy I ever managed with the 39 platform was in my 39TDS with the 16.5" barrel. It either liked the ammo or it hated it. My very best 100 yard opensight group with a 39 was with this rifle. Conversely some ammo would group in basketball sized groups (slight exaggeration) at 25 yards..

I settled on the 20" because it is easier to carry in the field and the barrel is long enough that I can still focus on the front sight with my aging eyes.
