I got this e-mail from Gabe Suarez today. I thought you all might like to read it.

OMAHA - WHAT WENT WRONG AND WHOSE FAULT IS IT?

Once Again…the Law failed…and The First Responders Were Irrelevant. How many more times will things like this happen before we stop relying on feel-good measures to keep us safe?

Right now, the witches and warlocks of government are plotting how to use this. The Kerrys, Kennedys and Pelosis are stirring their cauldrons as the Boxers and Feinsteins of the nation toss in their “eye of newt” to turn this event into a political platform from which to push their agendas.

They will say the 19-year-old Hawkins was a troubled young man. They will want to institute mandatory testing for all kids to determine their “danger quotient” so they can be “diverted” at birth.

They will call for more laws against the civil rights of all Americans in spite of the fact that there were already laws that would have prevented young Hawkins from possessing a firearm…had he obeyed them. Local records show Hawkins had a felony drug conviction on his record as well as several misdemeanor cases filed against him.

The focus of course will be the, “SKS semiautomatic Russian military rifle -- the same type used in the shooting” I would not be surprised if they painted the evil “assault rifle” as the main culprit with Hawkins as a poor impressionable American Boy trapped by the evil weapon’s spell.

“But there were laws preventing this”, the pundits of the left wing media will say.
“We need laws to get these guns off the street”, Sarah Brady will shriek from her broom on the way to work this morning.
“We need more police in Omaha”, someone else will say.

We have heard it all before…at Virginia Tech, Tacoma, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Columbine.

There are in fact laws and rules. But laws and rules are only for the good, as the bad never pay them any mind to begin with. There were laws keeping Hawkins from having a rifle, yet they failed. There were laws keeping Hawkins from killing so many people. But, as in Virginia, Tacoma, Salt Lake City, Seattle, and Columbine, the law failed, as it will always fail.

I am told by one who was there that Nebraska just passed their Concealed Carry Law, joining the rest of America in recognizing the God-given rights of its citizens enumerated in the Constitution. Yet there was one law that seemed to work. It was the one that said – “NO WEAPONS IN THE MALL”.

Indeed! I wonder how many will obey that stupid rule today?

We will hear abut the “evil” assault rifle as well. I suggest that all of you who do not have an AK, or an SKS, or even an AR, that you go into debt today and get one. Get one this week!. If we get the wrong sort into office next year, and it is quite likely we will, you can bet your bayonet that they will seize on events like this to ban even the mere picture of an SKS.

And the first responders…ah yes…the ones that arrive to save the day. Here is what the media said, “By the time police arrived they weren't sure how many shooters they were dealing with. They surrounded the mall, and once they were set up, shoppers and employees had to come out with their hands raised in the air.”

Very nice. Very nice. Thank you Mr. First responders for saving the day once again. You push for laws to take the guns out of the hands of common people and then arrive late to every single event that may have required their use. Shame on you.

Who is to blame? Well the murderer Hawkins is top of the list of course. But then there are those in power who sought to stall the Concealed Carry Law. They are at fault as well. And then the managers of the mall with the sign, “NO WEAPONS IN THE MALL”. They are equally at fault. I would like to see the survivors sue the state of Nebraska for dragging its feet on CCW and the owners of the Mall for preventing the legal exercise of rights.

In the meantime, buy all the guns and high capacity magazines you can. I think we can expect hard times for the civil rights of all Americans in a short time.

+1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000, man.
I would encourage all of you to vote for Ron Paul so that we can find our liberty again. He will likely remove most most, if not all, gun control that is detrimental to our well-being and helpful to the cowards like the Omaha shooter. Not enough people have hard of this guy, but he is the exact thing I'm looking for in a president, if not all of us at THR. Google him.

Thanks for the +1000000000000000000000000000000000000000, but dude, come on, don't get this thread locked within the first 10 minutes.

+1 on your whole OP. I would add also to not leave a paper trail, if possible. Buy from private sources, if there is any way. If the antis gain the White House, added to both houses of Congress, I believe that a gun seizure is not out of the question. But then, I'm preaching to the choir.
Mr. Hawkins was deeply disturbed, that much is obvious. How many more of our freedoms do we surrender to remove the Hawkins that are still in our midst? Or do we remove the tools that he uses? Or do we accept an occasional mall incident as the price of Liberty? Do we trust our politicans to make these choices? Things to think about.

1) A felon, which means he could not legally own/posess or control a firearm.

2) Had multiple charges & convictions in the past, and some were still pending -- two seperate charges of possession with intent to deliver drugs, and charges / convictions of: alcohol posession by a minor, third-degree assault, theft, unlawful tobacco use by a minor, disorderly conduct).

3) Was fired from his job for being an accused thief.

4) Had previously been treated with anti-depressants.

5) Was diognosed as ADHA (I'm guessing the drug ritalin might have been prescribed at one point -- which is basically speed/coke).

6) A high school drop out.

7) Had essentially been kicked out of his home.

8) Had stolen the weapon that he used to commit the crime.

9) 'Responsible' adults knew he had a firearm at least 1 day before the incident, and it's safe to assume they also knew of his criminal background since they took him in after he was kicked out of his home. These 'responsible' adults did not report this "felon in possesion of a firearm" to authorities.

10) previously made homicidal threats toward his stepmother.

11) 2 weeks before the mall murders the scumbag threatened to kill a 16 yo girl, kill her family, and burn down her house.

12) The scumbag was hospitalized twice for psychiatric problems in the past, for months at a time.

13) The scumbag spent a chunk of his youth as a 'ward of the state' in foster 'care.'

14) The murders took place in a posted "no-gun zone." Surprise, surprise, the bad guy didn't obey the sign.

You really can't blame gun laws.

This adult was just scum, if this didn't happen when he was 19, then he would have gone on to a stellar life of crime and incarceration -- spreading his damage out over the next 50 years.

Yes I did google him. Sorry about the thread-jack, I'm just worried that this will happen more after Clinton, or Obama, or anyone else gets elected. Also, I blame over medication and the prescription society for part responsibilty. this ******* was probably feeling sorry for himself and mad because he was medicated. Still, what a puss.

Let me see if I understand this, you propose as a solution for the nut cases that might pull out an assault rifle, the right of everybody to carry a gun, where they want, when they want.

hmmmmm even over looking that the guy that unveils his AK, or SKS and begins shooting, if a decent shot, will drop a half dozen, or more before any CCW present can pull their gun. I'm thinking then you might have dozens of CCW holders shooting each other, when they individually are not fully aware of what actually is happening ... most will only see the gore and hear the gunfire. What are you going to do when you hear several shots, look up and see a guy with his gun drawn, firing, while two, or three folks lay before him in a pool of blood ?

Besides the mass crossfire that might be created, by people who react to the gunshots, hysteria, and falling bodies, I suspect letting folks carry when and where they want just gives more guys like Hawkins a loaded gun. How do you separate the nut cases ? What do you do with little old ladies, old men, the disabled ... carry a gun for them ?

It sounds to me like you believe you are ok, but don't think others are, else why the great need for a gun ? Kinda like, "I'm OK, but you are not."

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/06/AR2007120601013.html?nav=hcmodule

"One man was apparently trying to call 911 at the top of an escalator in an atrium on the second floor when Hawkins aimed his weapon over a railing and shot him in the head from the third floor, witnesses said".

My goodness. This seems to put somewhat of a dent into the old "just dial 911" argument. I wonder how the account might have read if the victim had been allowed to carry something other than just a cell phone ...

This quote is from the BBC the whole article can be found at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7129906.stm
"The incident is the latest in a series of mass shootings in the US, which have reignited the debate in the US about gun ownership.

The Supreme Court will consider Americans' right to bear arms early next year for the first time in nearly 70 years. "
I thought this was an interesting quote from across the pond.

These situations always make me angry, you never really know what to say about them. I want to wonder what would have happened if there was at least one person trained in defensive shooting with a license for ccw in that mall.

Ahh the TV news just said that the scum had "previously made homicidal threats toward his stepmother."

At least we won't have to hear:

"Gee, he was such a nice young man, we NEVER saw this coming." ::puke::

"He was just getting his life back together."

Hook686,
what about the idea of firearm education, not necessarily making everyone carry one, but making sure everyone knows how to use one responsibly?

Most of my friends who are anti-gun have never shot a firearm or even held one. I think this mixed with the headlines these days just makes people fear guns and the people who own them. education on the subject might change their minds.

Good one, Hook686. I knew I was forgetting to post something... Yes the whole crossfire situation would be bad, but disciplined shooting would help overcome that. Take as careful a shot as you can, then make it absolutely clear that you are a friendly. That's really all you can do.

Hook686: Besides the mass crossfire that might be created, by people who react to the gunshots, hysteria, and falling bodies, I suspect letting folks carry when and where they want just gives more guys like Hawkins a loaded gun.

And this fundamentally different than the police response how exactly? How many shots did the NYPD fire at that grooms party? How many shots were fired at that white SUV? In both cases, 100s iirc, going every which way.

And when the police response time in 5 minutes too late, I'll take my chances with a bunch of CCWers, thank you very much.

And I'd also argue, that many people who CCW are far better shots than your 'average' LEO.

Hmm, 5 minutes too late. Hell I'd even take Grandma carrying an old 38 special if she would at least TRY and be IN TIME.

Seems like he threated murder just 2 weeks ago

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/nationworld/2004055800_mall06.html

Two weeks ago, he threatened to kill a 16-year-old girl and her family after accusing her of stealing things from his car, the girl said Thursday.

"He said, 'I'm going to kill you, I am going to kill your family and I'm going to burn your house down,"' she said.

The girl, a neighbor, shrugged off the threat because Hawkins was known for "shooting his mouth off."

That link to Mr. Lott's informative review of the incident should be as widespread as the "gloom and doom" that the mass media is spreading. Mr. Lott makes a good bit of sense in his comments. I agree totally with the assessment that local law enforcement just can not respond to a terrorist act such as this "in time". The situation unfolds in a heartbeat; the only chance to stop the threat is to have someone on site with the ability to put up some sort of a fight. The advent of "Gun Free Zones" is absurd; the only thing it does is put honest folks in jeopardy.

More laws and restrictions would not have done a thing to prevent this event. This dirtbag had a felony record, mental issues, and a stolen weapon. People in his close proximity had warnings of his behavior well in advance and did nothing to report it. Just how would putting more restrictions on honest people have helped in this incident?

Also, I blame over medication and the prescription society for part responsibilty. this ******* was probably feeling sorry for himself and mad because he was medicated.

Care to elaborate on this oddball theory?

re:dave pro 2a

"Ahh the TV news just said that the scum had "previously made homicidal threats toward his stepmother."

Thats what I do not understand if he made this threat why did she not report him? Both VA and this one could have been avoided because the noone is paying attention to the tell tale signs, I realize you can do this everytime but some are just blatently crying out for help.

"He will likely remove most most, if not all, gun control..."

He's running for president, not king.

Getting back to the original post:

What went wrong? A criminal bent on committing mass murder was successful.
Whose fault is it? The criminal.
